Comparison of hamate versus second or third toe osteochondral graft using magnetic resonance imaging for reconstruction of proximal interphalangeal fracture-dislocations.

Hemi-hamate arthroplasty is a method used to reconstruct complex fracture-dislocations of the proximal interphalangeal joint of the fingers. Other graft sites, including the toe second and third phalanges, have been proposed as alternatives to hemi-hamate arthroplasty due to variable clinical outcomes and anatomy. Through a prospective magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based study in asymptomatic individuals, we aimed to characterize the anatomy of the proximal interphalangeal joint and compare this with the hamate, second and third toes to determine the closest anatomical match using pre-deter

Fluoroscopic angiography in the gross anatomy dissection laboratory: visualizing the aortic arch and its branches in a cadaver.

We present fluoroscopic images of the aortic arch and its branches obtained in a first year medical gross anatomy teaching laboratory after an aberrant right subclavian artery was discovered during dissection. The aortic arch and its branches in the cadaver were filled with contrast medium in molten agar. After the agar solidified, a portable fluoroscope was used to obtain radiographic images. These post-mortem images were then compared with computed tomography images obtained while the individual was living. The embryology, prevalence, and clinical findings of this arterial variation are revi

Laparoscopic intracorporeal ultrasound. An alternative to cholangiography?

The purpose of this study was to compare laparoscopic intracorporeal ultrasound (LICU) examination of the biliary duct system with cholangiography for delineation of duct anatomy and determination of presence or absence of ductal calculi. Thirty-one patients had LICU examination of the extrahepatic bile ducts after exposure of the gallbladder but prior to dissection of the cystic duct. After LICU examination, cystic duct dissection and cholangiography were done. Evaluation of duct anatomy and decision for duct exploration were based on findings of both tests. All patients had successful LICU e

The Success and Safety of Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography in Surgically Altered Gastrointestinal Anatomy.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Performing endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) in surgically altered gastrointestinal anatomy remains challenging, frequently necessitating the use of forward-viewing endoscopes. Given the challenge in endoscope selection based on the type of altered anatomy, the aim of this study was to examine ERCP success rates by specific endoscopes for different anatomy types. METHODS: This single-center retrospective study examined ERCPs performed in patients with surgically altered gastrointestinal anatomy during an 18-year period. Enteroscopy success, cannulati

Cranial Appendages in Ruminants: Diversity, Evolution, Development, and Molecular Basis of Horns, Pronghorns, Antlers, and Ossicones.

Ruminants are unique among living mammals in possessing paired bony cranial appendages in the form of horns, pronghorns, antlers, or ossicones. This review summarizes current knowledge on the structure, development, function, and evolution of these appendages and integrates recent findings from genomics, transcriptomics, and single-cell analyses. Two competing hypotheses have been proposed to explain their origin. According to the independent-origin hypothesis, horns, pronghorns, antlers, and ossicones evolved separately in different pecoran lineages, possibly through repeated recruitment of s

Anatomy-aware, label-informed approach improves image registration for challenging datasets.

Image registration-based volumetric morphometrics have emerged as a valuable method for identifying subtle morphological differences in neuroimaging and other biomedical images. However, accurate registration out-of-the-box remains challenging when overt morphological phenotypes-such as those observed in developmental and comparative studies-are present in a dataset. A new label-informed image registration function developed in the ANTsX ecosystem provides an easy to use, generalizable solution for anatomy-aware registration of a wide diversity of morphological variation. In this approach, seg

Adult neurogenesis and gliogenesis in the dorsal and ventral canine hippocampus.

Dentate gyrus (DG) of the mammalian hippocampus gives rise to new neurons and astrocytes all through adulthood. Canine hippocampus presents many similarities in fetal development, anatomy, and physiology with human hippocampus, establishing canines as excellent animal models for the study of adult neurogenesis. In the present study, BrdU-dated cells of the structurally and functionally dissociated dorsal (dDG) and ventral (vDG) adult canine DG were comparatively examined over a period of 30 days. Each part's neurogenic potential, radial glia-like neural stem cells (NSCs) proliferation and diff

Survival Benefit of Surgery versus Oncology-Only Therapy in Artery-Involving Borderline Resectable and Locally Advanced Pancreatic Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Modern chemotherapy has redefined resectability of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), prioritizing tumor biology over anatomy. However, comparative outcomes of surgery versus continued oncologic therapy (COT) in borderline resectable (BR) or locally advanced (LA) PDAC remain unclear. This study addresses this gap. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective, international, multicenter cohort study included patients with BR/LA-PDAC treated with neoadjuvant or primary chemotherapy between 2012 and 2024. All met guideline-based criteria for potential resection on the basis of anat

Morphological description of the alimentary canal and adnexal glands in Amazilia tzacatl, Amazilia saucerottei, Amazilia amabilis and Anthrachotorax nigricollis species.

The hummingbird family (Trochilidae) includes the smallest and most metabolically active vertebrates. They have a high energy demand because of their extraordinarily high metabolic rates during hovering while looking for food. The morphology of the digestive apparatus is related to the feeding habits of the species. The anatomy and histology of the digestive apparatus in these birds have not been thoroughly described except for their tongue. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the gross anatomy and histology of the alimentary canal and adnexal glands in four species from the hummingbird fa

Multi-class point cloud completion networks for 3D cardiac anatomy reconstruction from cine magnetic resonance images.

Cine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the current gold standard for the assessment of cardiac anatomy and function. However, it typically only acquires a set of two-dimensional (2D) slices of the underlying three-dimensional (3D) anatomy of the heart, thus limiting the understanding and analysis of both healthy and pathological cardiac morphology and physiology. In this paper, we propose a novel fully automatic surface reconstruction pipeline capable of reconstructing multi-class 3D cardiac anatomy meshes from raw cine MRI acquisitions. Its key component is a multi-class point cloud complet
