Recently, nutritional anemia has been increasing, particularly refractory iron-deficiency anemia, which has become more common not only among older adults but also among relatively young people. Coexisting conditions such as chronic inflammatory disease, gastrointestinal disease, and chronic kidney disease can all complicate diagnosis and treatment. In many cases, appropriate treatment can improve anemia. Same as iron, copper, and zinc are proven to be absorbed from the transporter in the upper gastrointestinal mucosa, but potential zinc and copper deficiencies are increasingly being reported

Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are clonal disorders characterized by ineffective hematopoiesis with rare occurrence in childhood. Conversely to adult affected patients, refractory anemia with ringed sideroblasts and the 5q-syndrome, which are associated with thrombocytosis are virtually absent in the pediatric age group. We describe the case of an 1-year-old boy with advanced MDS, specifically refractory anemia with excess of blasts who presented with leukocytopenia and anemia but marked thrombocytosis at diagnosis. Thrombocytosis resolved without therapy. This case illustrates the relationsh

A series of 27 patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) was analysed to determine the clinical and pathologic features, the natural history and the prognostic factors. The clinical features of these patients included the following: mean age 53.77 years; symptoms due to cytopenias 100 per cent; hepatomegaly 44.5 per cent; splenomegaly 11 per cent. Almost all patients with MDS presented anemia; additional cytopenias were present in many patients. The bone marrow was hypocellular in 1/3 of cases. The patients have been classified according to the French-American-British (FAB) Group criteria:

Counts of cells or other phenomena observed through a microscope are numeric observations and, as such, are subject to mathematical and statistical analyses. For example, the Poisson probability function provides the probability of observing a particular number of blasts in a bone marrow aspirate, given an underlying true fraction of blasts present and a particular number of cells evaluated. Furthermore, using the Poisson function, Bayes theorem can provide the probabilities of specific categories of refractory anemia, given a number of observed blasts in a specific total of cells evaluated. We report four patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) with isochromosome i(17q) as the sole chromosomal anomaly. One patient was classified as refractory anemia (RA) and three as refractory anemia with excess of blasts (RAEB). All four patients shared several features such as male sex, advanced age, severe anemia, as well as a bone marrow with myeloproliferative characteristics: hypercellularity, prominent baso- and eosinophilia, and marked increase of micromegakaryocytes. We suggest that patients with i(17q) as the sole chromosomal anomaly may identify a distinct MDS with characteristic

A 67-year-old female was admitted to our hospital because of pancytopenia. Forty-six percent of erythroblasts in the bone marrow were ringed sideroblasts. Laboratory findings showed an IgG-kappa monoclonal gammopathy. She was diagnosed as having sideroblastic anemia associated with multiple myeloma in mosaic (45, X/46, XX/47, XXX) Turner's syndrome. There was no response to therapy. The chromosomal pattern of the patient was varied, and was accompanied by the development of refractory anemia with an excess of blasts from refractory anemia with ringed sideroblast 4 months after presentation. Twenty patients with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) were diagnosed in University Hospital, Kuala Lumpur over a 5 year period. They were subclassified using the French American British (FAB) criteria. 90% of the patients were above 40 years old and the sex ratio was about equal. The predominant presenting symptom was anaemia and there was paucity of physical signs at presentation. Patients with 'aggressive' subtypes of MDS i.e. refractory anaemia with excess blasts (RAEB), refractory anaemia with excess blasts in transformation (RAEB(-)+) and chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia (CMML) had more fre

A male with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) following aplastic anemia is reported. The patient had been diagnosed as aplastic anemia at 8 years of age, and treated with blood transfusions, anabolic and glucocorticoid steroid hormones. Over a period of subsequent twelve years, he had remission and deterioration. At the age of 21, the patient developed a sudden progression of severe anemia, when his bone marrow showed hyperplasia with prominent dyshematopoiesis and excess of blasts, compatible with MDS by the definition of FAB classification. He received low dose Ara-C therapy, which was ineffect

BACKGROUND: Anemia during pregnancy is associated with increased risks of preterm birth, preeclampsia, cesarean delivery, and maternal morbidity. The most prevalent modifiable cause of pregnancy-associated anemia is iron deficiency. However, it is still unclear whether iron therapy can reduce the risks of adverse outcomes in women with anemia.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine whether response to iron therapy among women with anemia is associated with a change in odds of adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a population-based cohort study (2011-2019) using an

We identified the telomere length at different hematological phases in 16 patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), showing disease evolution with a conventional Southern blot hybridization using the (TTAGGG)4 probe. The MDS patients studied were classified into three groups according to the pattern of telomere length reduction. The first group had telomere shortening at the time of disease diagnosis. In four of the six MDS patients in this group, the disease progressed within 6 months postdiagnosis and each of them survived for less than 1 year. Moreover, in this group four patients show

In vitro megakaryocytic colony formation by progenitors from the bone marrow was studied in 40 myelodysplastic syndrome patients. Megakaryocytic colonies were decreased in number or absent in 30 patients; only 10 showed normal colony growth. The growth correlated to some extent with the FAB-class. Patients with normal colony formation had either RA or RARS, but also in these two FAB-types half of the patients showed reduced megakaryocytic colony formation. Only 1 out of 15 patients with RAEB or RAEBt had normal megakaryocyte growth. The patients with CMML did not show any megakaryocytic coloni

Stem cell transplantation for myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is characterized by high transplant-related mortality (TRM), especially in older patients and those with more advanced disease. Outcome after peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT) may be superior to earlier results with bone marrow transplantation. Forty-three patients (aged 12-73 years; median, 49 years) received an HLA-identical sibling donor PBSCT. Twenty three patients aged < or =55 years without prohibitive comorbidity received myeloablative total body irradiation-based conditioning, followed by a T cell-depleted PB

To understand the underlying mechanisms in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) by identifying target tumor suppressor genes, we performed a detailed deletional mapping of the short arm of chromosome 1 in 38 paired samples of bone marrow and peripheral blood obtained from individuals with MDS by PCR amplification of a total of 23 highly informative microsatellite sequences. We identified the commonly deleted region between D1S508 and D1S244. LOH of this region was found in five patients (13%). In addition, LOH at 1p was associated with a poor clinical outcome, suggesting that the deletion of a gene

To elucidate the genetic events that may play an important role in the progression of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) to acute myeloid leukemia (AML), we performed allelotype analysis of 24 individuals using matched MDS and AML samples from the same patients. Because the evolution can take years to occur, we used DNAs extracted from archival samples. These samples were analyzed with 79 microsatellite markers, which mapped to each of the autosomal arms except the short arms of the acrocentric chromosomes. Loss of heterozygosity on at least one locus was observed in 18 of the 24 cases (75%) as th

There is no standard therapy for elderly patients with high-risk myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). The treatment options of low-dose Ara-C and haematopoietic growth factors are disappointing in regard to response rate or response duration. We tested the treatment with a 72-h continuous infusion of low-dose 5-Aza-2'-deoxycytidine (DAC) in a group of 29 elderly patients with high-risk MDS. In 15 patients (54%) we observed a response. Eight complete responses were reached, even among patients with bad prognostic cytogenetic findings. The actuarial median survival from the start of the therapy was 4

Dysmegakaryocytopoiesis is an integral component of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), and has been shown in some studies to be an independent prognostic factor. Megakaryocytic hypogranulation, a feature we have noticed for some time to be fairly common in MDS and acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), has received little attention in the literature as a dysplastic feature of megakaryocytes. This study was performed to determine how frequently this feature was observed in MDS and the specificity of its occurrence. On review of archival materials, hypogranular megakaryocytes were observed in 80.3% of MDS,

The purpose of this study was to improve erythropoiesis in patients with anemia due to myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). We treated 13 patients first with recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (rhGM-CSF) for 6 weeks, then with recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEpo) and rhGM-CSF for the next 12 weeks. Five patients had refractory anemia (RA), 3 refractory anemia with ringed sideroblasts (RAS), and 5 refractory anemia with excess of blasts (RAEB). Ten patients were transfusion-dependent at the time of inclusion. Eleven patients completed this phase II study. Five re

Treatment with recombinant erythropoietin (EPO) can alleviate anaemia in patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). The present study, based on a long-term follow-up of 68 MDS patients (26RA, 16 RAS, 26 RAEB) treated with EPO alone, pinpoints pre-treatment variables associated with response induction, response duration and overall survival. Response, defined as an increase in haemoglobin >15gL1 or eliminated erythrocyte transfusion requirements, was observed in 22 of 66 (33%) evaluable patients. The median response duration was 15 (range 3-64+) months. Using univariate logistic regression
