Several amino acid phosphorodiamidate derivatives of d4T as anti-HIV prodrugs were synthesized and investigated using electrospray ionization multistage tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS(n)). A novel methyl group migration in gas phase was observed in ESI-MS(2) of the sodium adducts of amino acid methyl ester of phosphorodiamidates of 2',3'-didehydro-2',3'-dideoxythymidine (d4T). Application of citric acid/acetic anhydride reagent (CAR), a colour reagent selective for tertiary amines in solution, improves detection of abused tertiary amino drugs on the TLC plate. The plate is pretreated by a brief immersion in phosphoric acid/acetone solution to suppress colouration. The authors describe a clinical case of occupational asthma due to dioctyl-phthalate in a worker using a conveyor belt for bottle stoppers. The dioctyl-phthalate is used for the production of PVC and as a compound of many other substances. The literature describes many cases of occupational asthma do to phthalate anhydride but few cases do to dioctyl phthalate. Toxicological analysis of hair was used to detect cocaine use in a group of 615 pregnant women. Hair samples were washed, enzymatically digested, and analyzed by radioimmunoassay for cocaine. Positive results were confirmed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry after a solid-phase extraction. Benzoylecgonine (BZE) and cocaine were detected after derivatization with pentafluoropropionic-anhydride-pentafluoropropanol. Deuterated cocaine and BZE were used as internal standards. Earlier studies on the rat and the monkey had demonstrated that an injection of styrene maleic anhydride (SMA) in a solvent vehicle of dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) into the lumen of the vas deferens is toxicologically safe and has contraceptive action. Phase I clinical trial was therefore undertaken on 38 male volunteers giving varying doses of SMA, ranging between 5 mg and 140 mg, into each vas deferens. In order to develop a radioimmunoassay for the new progestagen dienogest (STS 557, 17 alpha-cyanomethyl-17 beta-hydroxy-estra-4,9-dien-3-one), bovine serum albumin (BSA) conjugates of STS 557-3-carboxymethyloxime and of STS 557-11-hemisuccinate were synthesized as antigens for the production of antisera. It was proved that an excess of isobutylchlorocarbonate in the coupling reaction using the "mixed anhydride method" results in an acylation of free NH2-groups in the BSA. By the immunization of rabbits with the STS 557-antigen-antisera of high specificity and affinity to STS 557 were produced.

Salicylic acid (SA)-based physically crosslinked pH-sensitive hydrogels were developed for oral insulin delivery using various ratios of salicylate-based poly(anhydride-ester) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA). Pore size, swelling behavior, insulin loading, insulin and SA release rates of the gels were varied by changing PAA concentration.
