STUDY DESIGN: Prospective nonrandomized controlled trial.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the effect of fibular repositioning tape (FRT) on incide … to return to play.
RESULTS: Four hundred forty-three measured basketball exposures resulted in 11 ankle injuries. All injuries occurred in subjects with a history of previous ankle sprain. Significantly less ankle injuries were sustained by members of the FRT condition (n = 2), compared to members of the control condition (n = 9) (Fisher exact test, P = .03). …

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to document the outcome of non-surgical management of equinovarus ankle contracture in a cohort of patients with acquired brain injury admitted to a specialist Neurosurgical Rehabilitation Unit.
METHODS: This prospective descriptive study examined all patients with a new diagnosis of moderate to severe acquired brain injury (Glasgow Coma Scale score </=12) admitted for rehabilitation over a 1 year period. Ankle dorsiflexion range and plantarflexor/invertor muscle activity were evaluated weekly during the period of hospitalization. Contract

A prospective study of subtotal amputation of the ankle following motorcycle spoke injury was carried out to define the mechanism of the injury and results of revasculization. Between 1990 to 1995, there were 42 patients with this type of injury. They were 31 boys and 11 girls. All sustained severe skin lacerations, medial, posterior, lateral and anterior to the ankle joint. All tendons and neurovascular bundles medial, lateral and anterior to the ankle were completely torn, leaving tendons of anterior tibial, extensor hallucis longus and extensor digitorum communis intact. Revascularization w

This study was undertaken to compare the clinical and magnetic resonance imaging results of 24 patients who had sustained ligament injuries after acute inversion injury of the ankle. On magnetic resonance imaging, the following lesions were detected: anterior talofibular ligament tear in 23 patients, calcaneofibular ligament lesion in 15, posterior talofibular ligament lesion in 11, interosseous talocalcaneal ligament lesion in 13, cervical ligament lesion in 12, and deltoid ligament lesion in 8. Compared with the clinical outcome at the follow-up study, there was a statistically significant r

BACKGROUND: Noncontact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are common and carry long-term consequences for the athlete. Altered foot and ankle biomechanics, landing patterns, and prior ankle injury have been implicated in ACL injury risk and may inform prevention strategies.
PURPOSE: To identify key biomechanical risk factors associated with the foot and ankle that may contribute to ACL injury risk.
STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review; Level of evidence, 4.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) 2020

Purpose: This study utilized a combination of musculoskeletal modeling and finite element analysis to investigate the effects of varying ankle dorsiflexion ranges on knee joint loading, soft tissue stress distribution, and the coactivation patterns of muscles surrounding the knee during landing. Methods: Based on the Weight-Bearing Lunge Test (WBLT), a total of 32 basketball players into two groups: normal dorsiflexion (ND) and limited dorsiflexion (LD) and conducted six countermovement jumps (CMJ) while collecting motion and force data. Personalized musculoskeletal models were created using O

Elite dance requires highly controlled balance performance in dynamic visual and auditory environments characterized by the use of stage lighting and music. Perturbing visual input is known to influence balance in dancers, but the effects of sounds have not been clearly established. Ankle inversion injuries are common in dancers and may also play a role in dancers' ability to respond to sensory perturbations. The aims of this study were to identify changes in static balance in response to visual or auditory perturbation in elite collegiate dancers with and without a history of ankle injury, an

Ankle sprains are the most frequent sport related injuries with involvement of the lateral collateral ligament complex occurring in 85% of cases. Isolated anterior talofibular ligament injury is by far the commonest followed by combined anterior talofibular and calcaneofibular ligament strain. The posterior talofibular ligament is the strongest component of the lateral collateral ligament complex and is injured in severe ankle injury along with the other lateral collateral ligaments. While isolated calcaneofibular ligament strain has been reported, calcaneofibular ligament and posterior talofi

BACKGROUND: In the existing classifications, no importance is given to dislocations accompanying ankle fractures. The present study aims to investigate differences in injury mechanisms of ankle fractures with concomitant dislocation injury in respect of functional outcomes and complications.
METHODS: A retrospective evaluation was carried out of 285 patients who underwent surgery in our clinic for an ankle fracture between January 2012 and December 2018. A comparison was made of functional scores and complications between the patients with ankle fracture with dislocation (AF-D group) and pati

BACKGROUND: The effect of ankle positioning during suture-button fixation for syndesmosis repair on range of motion (ROM) and anatomic reduction has yet to be investigated. The purpose of this cadaveric study was to compare the effects of 3 different ankle positions during suture-button repair on volumetric reduction of the syndesmosis, fibular displacement, and ROM of the ankle using 3-dimensional computed tomography (CT) analysis. The null hypothesis was that ankle position during fixation would not affect syndesmotic volume restoration, fibular displacement, or ROM.
METHODS: Twelve matched

[Purpose] To collect basic data for exercise programs designed to enhance functional knee and ankle joint stability based on isokinetic measurement and muscle strength evaluations in normal and impaired functional states. [Subjects and Methods] Twenty-four subjects were randomly assigned to the athlete group and the control group (n = 12 each). Data were collected of isokinetic knee extensor and flexor strength at 60°/sec, 180°/sec, and 240°/sec and ankle plantar and dorsiflexor strength at 30°/sec and 120°/sec. [Results] Significant intergroup differences were observed in peak torque of the r

Ankle and subtalar joint injuries of vehicle front seat occupants are frequently recorded during frontal and offset vehicle crashes. A few injury criteria for foot and ankle were proposed in the past; however, they addressed only certain injury mechanisms or impact loadings. The main goal of this study was to investigate numerically the tolerance of foot and ankle under complex loading which may appear during automotive crashes. A previously developed and preliminarily validated foot and leg finite element (FE) model of a 50th percentile male was employed in this study. The model was further v

CONCLUSION: Syndesmosis surgical exploration is an essential treatment in some Weber type C ankle injuries, which make debridement and direct reduction of the syndesmosis possible, providing thus a more stabilized ankle joint. Level of Evidence III, Retrospective Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: Not all patients develop chronic ankle instability (CAI) after one or more lateral ankle sprains; some seem to heal or adjust to the ankle laxity after injury. Why do some patients develop CAI and others are able to cope and return to normal function? The purpose of this study was to examine ligament laxity between subjects with and without CAI.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen subjects with unilateral CAI and 16 subjects without participated in the study. Ligament laxity was measured with an instrumented ankle arthrometer. The arthrometer measured ankle joint motion for anterior/po

BACKGROUND: Ballet dancers have been shown to have a relatively high incidence of stress fractures of the foot and ankle. It was our objective to examine MR imaging patterns of bone marrow edema (BME) in the ankles of high performance professional ballet dancers, to evaluate clinical relevance.
METHODS: MR Imaging was performed on 12 ankles of 11 active professional ballet dancers (6 female, 5 male; mean age 24 years, range 19 to 32). Individuals were imaged on a 0.2 T or 1.5 T MRI units. Images were evaluated by two musculoskeletal radiologists and one orthopaedic surgeon in consensus for lo
