Dental management of patients with epidermolysis bullosa.

Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) is a group of rare, genetic skin disorders characterized by fragility and blistering to minimal trauma. All oral surfaces may be involved, including the tongue, buccal mucosa, palate, floor of the mouth and gingiva. Common oral findings of the disease include microstomia, intraoral ulcerations and bullae formation, ankyloglossia, tongue atrophy, elimination of buccal and vestibular sulci, lingual depapillation and atrophy of the palatal folds. In these case reports; systemic findings, oral manifestations and preventive measures are described for 3 patients with EB, a…

Studies of malformation syndromes of man XXXXI B: nosologic studies in the Hanhart and the Möbius syndrome.

We reviewed etiologic and phenotypic aspects of those orofacial and limb anomalies usually diagnosed as Hanhart syndrome and Mobius syndrome but also those described, among others, under names such as aglossia-adactylia syndrome, gloss-palatine ankylosis, ankyloglossia superior, peromelia and micrognathia, cleft palate/lateral synechiae syndrome, and the Charlie M. syndrome. By coding the degree of severity of the limb defects it was possible to compare these cases quantitatively and to determine the nosologic significance of associated cranial nerve palsies and chest abnormalities. We analyze…

Maternal Experiences and Challenges in Breastfeeding Infants with Tongue-Tie: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Tongue-tie, clinically referred to as ankyloglossia, is a common condition characterized by an unusually short lingual frenulum and is associated with breastfeeding difficulties. Mothers of infants with tongue-ties are at increased risk of not only painful breastfeeding and poor latching, but also increased maternal stress and decreased maternal-infant bonding. The purpose of this systematic review is to examine the literature on maternal experiences and wellbeing while feeding infants with tongue-ties. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, Web of Science and EMBASE for relevant article…

A 7-week-old boy with violaceous patches and skin nodules. Leukemia cutis.

A 7-week-old boy presented to the pediatric dermatology clinic for evaluation of diffuse blue lesions on the skin. The mother first noticed a bluish lesion on the left thigh at 6 to 7 weeks of age. The child quickly developed several similar lesions and deeper nodules on the head, arms, and trunk. He had a history of ankyloglossia and subsequent uncomplicated repair, as well as a sister with neonatal anemia. He was otherwise well and thriving. Review of systems was unremarkable. His birth involved an uncomplicated delivery, with negative maternal serology. There was no history of maternal infe…

Corrosive injury of oral cavity--a rare presentation.

Corrosive injury of the upper gastrointestinal tract has been frequently reported in medical literature. The ingestion of acid or alkali may be accidental or intentional. The spectrum of injury varies from involving the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum either individually or together. The oral cavity is rarely involved. The sequelae of oral cavity caustic injury that have been reported include microstomia, shallow vestibule, ankyloglossia, speech impairment, loss of teeth and impairment of facial expression. We report a case of corrosive injury of the oral cavity following accidental ingestio…

Enhanced teratogenic activity of di-n-butyltin diacetate by carbon tetrachloride pretreatment in rats.

Di-n-butyltin diacetate (DBTA) has been shown previously to cause malformations such as cleft mandible, ankyloglossia and fused ribs in rat foetuses after oral treatment of dams on day 8 of gestation. In this study, effects of pretreatment with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) on the teratogenic activity of DBTA were examined in Wistar rats. Pregnant rats were pretreated sc with CCl4 (0.5 ml/kg) on days 6 and 7 of gestation and were treated orally with DBTA on day 8 of gestation at doses of 0, 4.5, 10 or 22 mg/kg. Caesarean sections were performed on day 20 of gestation, and foetuses were examined …

Do mutations in the basement membrane zone affect the human periodontium? Review with special reference to epidermolysis bullosa.

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a group of diseases characterized by the development of blisters or erosions following minor trauma to the skin. Oral findings that have been associated with EB include keratin-filled cysts; blistering of the mucosa, tongue, and lips; perioral carcinomas; ankyloglossia; lingual papilla atrophy; caries; enamel hypoplasia; rapid attrition of the teeth; and obliteration of the oral vestibule. Defects at the basal cell/basement membrane/connective tissue levels correspond to the mutations in basal cell keratins, hemidesmosome components, and type VII collagen, respect…

Controversy Over Tongue-Tie: Divisions in the Community of Healthcare Professionals.

While recent decades have seen a rapid rise in cases of infant tongue-tie and in surgery to correct it, a controversy is now raging over the condition. Opinion is especially divided over so-called posterior tongue-tie, a variant which is detected based on the "feel" of the sub-lingual space. Drawing on ethnographic research with clinicians in England, we clarify the professional and personal commitments involved in the controversy. Our analysis is informed by Douglas' theory of cultural representations (grid-group theory), in which ideas of what is natural and unnatural constitute central meta

Frenotomy for tongue-tie in newborn infants.

BACKGROUND: Tongue-tie (ankylglossia) occurs when there is an anterior attachment near the tip of the tongue resulting in restricted tongue movement. It is reported to be a cause of poor breastfeeding in infants and nipple pain in breastfeeding mothers. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the study were to determine whether frenotomy is safe and effective in improving ability to feed orally among infants. INTERVENTION/METHODS: Frenotomy may correct the restriction of tongue movement and allow improved breast feeding and reduced maternal nipple pain. Randomised, quasi-randomised cluster-randomised

Alternative splicing, phylogenetic analysis, and craniofacial expression of zebrafish tbx22.

Mutations in human TBX22 cause X-linked cleft palate with ankyloglossia syndrome (CPX; OMIM 303400). Since the secondary palate was an adaptation to breathing on land, we characterized zebrafish tbx22 to study molecular mechanisms regulating early vertebrate craniofacial patterning. Rapid Amplification of cDNA Ends (RACE) analyses revealed two zebrafish tbx22 splice isoforms, tbx22-1 and tbx22-2, encoding proteins of 444 and 400 amino acids, respectively. tbx22-1 resembles canonical Tbx22 orthologs, while tbx22-2 lacks conserved N-terminal sequence. Developmental RT-PCR revealed that tbx22-1 i…
