[Assessment of visual acuity in aphakia patient after bilateral cataract removal].

Congenital cataracts are lens opacities that are already present at birth or are developing in the first years of life. Treatment consists of the surgical removal of the lens. Bilateral cataract deeply impairs vision, preventing the development of physiological reflex fixation and causes the development of nystagmus about 3 months of age. This nystagmus persists even after the surgical removal of cataracts without allowing often >0,1 visual acuity despite adequate aperture correction. Intraocular lens implants in children under the age of 1 are subject to discussion. Presents the patient's cur

Iris claw intraocular lens: a viable option in monocular surgical aphakia.

To evaluate the safety and efficacy of iris claw intraocular lens (IOL) implantation for correction of monocular surgical aphakia in eyes with no capsular support. This is a prospective interventional case series of 30 eyes of monocular surgical aphakia. Patients underwent posterior iris claw implantation 4 weeks after the primary surgery. Aphakia which resulted due to posterior capsular rupture, large zonulo-dialysis (>180°) and cases of intracapsular cataract extraction in subluxated cataractous lens (>180°) where a posterior chamber IOL could not be placed were included in this study. Posto…

The infant aphakia treatment study contact lens experience: one-year outcomes.

PURPOSE: We describe our experience correcting a cohort of infants with contact lenses in the Infant Aphakia Treatment Study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-seven infants 1-6 months of age were randomized to contact lens wear. An examination under anesthesia was performed at the time of enrollment and at approximately 1 year of age. A traveling examiner assessed visual acuity at approximately 1 year of age. RESULTS: Forty-two treated eyes (74 %) were fitted with silicone elastomer (SE) contact lenses; 12 eyes (21 %) with rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses, and 3 eyes (5%) wore both lens …

Motor deficits and altered striatal gene expression in aphakia (ak) mice.

Like humans with Parkinson's disease (PD), the ak mouse lacks the majority of the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) and experiences striatal denervation. The purpose of this study was to test whether motor abnormalities in the ak mouse progress over time, and whether motor function could be associated with temporal alterations in the striatal transcriptome. Ak and wt mice (28 to 180 days old) were tested using paradigms sensitive to nigrostriatal dysfunction. Results were analyzed using a linear mixed model. Ak mice significantly underperformed wt controls in rotarod, balance beam, string t

Extended wear rigid gas permeable lenses used for correction of aphakia.

A study of extended wear rigid gas permeable lenses in aphakic patients was started in 1975. We present an analysis of 186 patients (274 eyes) with from 1 to 194 months (average: 88 months) of extended wear. Patients wore their lenses 24 hours per day, only removing the lenses for periodic cleaning. Approximately one-third of the patients removed their lenses at least once per week; roughly another one-third wore lenses for up to a month between cleanings; and one-third cleaned lenses at intervals up to 6 months. All of the patients in the study achieved vision with their contact lenses compar

Clinical evaluation of extended-wear lidofilcon B contact lenses in aphakia.

A total of 138 aphakic eyes in 109 patients were fitted with lidofilcon B contact lenses for extended wear. These patients were observed for six months to more than three years. Their problems with fit, comfort, infection, lens loss, and visual acuity were reviewed. A comparison between patients in whom the lenses were used successfully and patients in whom the lenses were used unsuccessfully was made, and the causes of failure discussed.

[Posttraumatic unilateral aphakia and contact lens -binocular functions of grown-ups].

The binocular results are only subnormal and comparable to former squinting patients. The results are better if one succeeds in reaching a visual acuity of at least 1.0. One can try to prevent a divergence by prescribing a contact lens as early as possible. Presbyopic patients have better binocular functions because the lost accommodation is the most interfering component (factor). It has disadvantageous effects especially on those patients who are yet presbyopic. The aniseikonia is in contrary to this not an as important interfering factor.

Outcomes of rigid gas permeable contact lens correction in paediatric aphakia.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to assess visual outcomes, tolerance, and adverse events in paediatric aphakia following lensectomy when managed with rigid gas-permeable contact lenses worn on a 7-day extended-wear schedule. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted of children undergoing lensectomy at the [redacted for review] Hospital from 1 January 2014 to 1 January 2021. Children whose aphakia was corrected with rigid gas-permeable contact lenses following lensectomy were included. Children corrected with a primary intraocular lens were excluded. Ophthalmic follow-up data were anal…

Custom-made anterior chamber intraocular lens for aphakia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Aphakia without adequate capsular support requires alternative intraocular lens (IOL) fixation strategies. Standard options include sulcus-fixated posterior chamber IOLs and retropupillary iris-claw lenses, both of which depend on specific anatomical prerequisites. When these are absent, anterior chamber IOLs (AC-IOLs) become one of the few remaining options; however, the only widely available angle-supported model has been the rigid Kelman Multiflex (PMMA), unchanged since its FDA approval in 1980. We describe the development and three-year clinical outcome of a custom-made, folda…

Bilateral Artisan lens for aphakia and megalocornea: Long-term follow-up.

We received approval from the U.S. implant Food and Drug Administration and the University's Institutional Review Board to the Artisan lens (Ophtec BV) in both eyes of a patient who was aphakic and had megalocornea. No other intraocular lens would easily solve this patient's need because of the large anterior segment. The patient was having increasing difficulty with aphakic contact lenses because of his work environment. We present almost 5 years of follow-up data of this patient.

Binocular vision regained after monocular traumatic aphakia by wearing contact lenses.

In this study 35 patients with monocular traumatic aphakia were enrolled to document the degree of binocular vision gained by optical correction with contact lenses. The most important factors in achieving binocular vision were the interval between formation of the traumatic cataract and surgery and between the operation and starting wearing contact lenses. There was a statistically significant correlation between these two intervals and the achievement of near stereopsis and normal visual acuity.

Which lens: contact lenses currently available for extended wear in aphakia.

To date, a number of specific materials have been used for extended wear lenses in aphakia. While none of the materials are ideal, reasonable results have been achieved with three types of materials: thin hydrophilics, silicone, and high water content hydrophilics. The various available lenses are described, and their physical properties are related to the process of extended wear. The authors' techniques for fitting, follow-up, evaluation, and prevention of complications are presented.
