Excitotoxic lesions of the lateral parabrachial nucleus do not prevent cholecystokinin-induced suppression of milk intake in rats.

We examined the effect of lateral (visceral) and medial (gustatory) parabrachial nucleus (PBN) lesions on the suppression of milk intake induced with cholecystokinin (CCK) in 24 h food-deprived rats. Irrespective of CCK dose, each type of PBN lesion significantly elevated the consumption of milk. Neither medial nor lateral PBN lesions had any discernible influence on the anorectic action of CCK, however. In combination with the results from a previous study using the same rats (Brain Res. 894 (2001) 288), the present results support the view that the role of the lateral PBN in CCK-induced anor

A history of the identification of the characteristic eating disturbances of Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder and Anorexia Nervosa.

During the last 25 years, the careful examination of the eating behavior of individuals with eating disorders has provided critical insights into the nature of these disorders. Crucially, studies investigating components of different eating behaviors have documented that Anorexia Nervosa (AN), Bulimia Nervosa (BN), and Binge Eating Disorder (BED) are characterized by objective disturbances in eating patterns that are significantly different than behaviors exhibited by individuals who do not have these eating disorders. The detailed description of the disturbances in eating behavior has helped

Reduced plasma interleukin-6 concentration after transcranial direct current stimulation to the prefrontal cortex.

OBJECTIVES: Transcranial direct stimulation (tDCS) targeted to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) reduces food intake and hunger, but its effects on circulating factors are unclear. We assessed the effect of repeated administration of tDCS to the left DLPFC (L-DLPFC) on concentrations of pro/anti-inflammatory and appetitive hormone concentrations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-nine healthy adults with obesity (12 M; 42±11 y; BMI=39±8 kg/m2) received 3 consecutive inpatient sessions of either anodal or sham tDCS targeted to the L-DLPFC during a period of ad libitum food intake. FTO variation and early frontostriatal brain development in children.

OBJECTIVE: Common obesity-associated genetic variants at the fat mass and obesity-associated (FTO) locus have been associated with appetitive behaviors and altered structure and function of frontostriatal brain regions. The authors aimed to investigate the influence of FTO variation on frontostriatal appetite circuits in early life. METHODS: Data were drawn from RESONANCE, a longitudinal study of early brain development. Growth trajectories of nucleus accumbens and frontal lobe volumes, as well as total gray matter and white matter volume, by risk allele (AA) carrier status on FTO single-nucl

Listening to children with obesity: lived experiences of hunger, cravings, and satiety.

BACKGROUND: Appetite regulation is central to childhood obesity, yet little is known about how children themselves experience and interpret sensations of hunger, cravings, and satiety. This study aimed to explore how children living with overweight or obesity describe these sensations and how they respond to them in everyday life. METHODS: This qualitative study included 32 children (17 girls, 15 boys) aged 8-10 years who were interviewed four years after enrolling in a randomized controlled obesity treatment trial in Stockholm, Sweden. At follow-up (mean age 9.4 years, SD 0.8), the majority

Eating styles with some feeling: Latent profiles of appetitive and emotion-related impulsivity traits.

INTRODUCTION: Research focused on adult eating styles would benefit from investigating whether latent profiles of appetitive and emotion-related impulsivity traits differ in eating disorder (ED) and general psychopathology. OBJECTIVE: This study identified and validated latent eating profiles based on appetitive and emotion-related impulsivity traits. METHOD: We conducted a cross-sectional study in a non-clinical sample of 232 adults who completed an online battery of questionnaires assessing appetitive traits, emotion-related impulsivity, ED symptomatology, anxiety, depression, stress, and

Frontal behavioral syndromes in Prader-Willi syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a genetically determined neurodevelopmental disorder presenting with behavioral problems including hyperphagia, emotional aberration, and compulsion-like behaviors. This combination of behavioral problems is likely to be caused by damage to the orbitofrontal cortices and anterior temporal lobes or to circuits involving them. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the prevalence of eating and non-eating behavioral disturbances in PWS by using assessment tools developed originally for patients with frontotemporal dementia and with frontal lobe injury. METHOD: The

Infection-induced viscerosensory signals from the gut enhance anxiety: implications for psychoneuroimmunology.

Infection and inflammation lead to changes in mood and cognition. Although the "classic" sickness behavior syndrome, involving fatigue, social withdrawal, and loss of appetites are most familiar, other emotional responses accompany immune activation, including anxiety. Recent studies have shown that gastrointestinal bacterial infections lead to enhanced anxiety-like behavior in mice. The bacteria-induced signal is most likely carried by vagal sensory neurons, and occurs early on (within 6h) during the infection. These signals induce evidence of activation in brain regions that integrate viscer

Bridging appetite and emotional dynamics: the oxytocinergic system as a therapeutic axis in feeding and eating disorders.

Feeding and eating disorders represent some of the most devastating and paradoxical conditions in medicine, where the biological drive to survive collides with altered motivation, affect, and reward. Although neurobiological and metabolic research has substantially advanced our understanding of feeding and eating disorders, mechanism-driven therapeutic options remain limited. The oxytocinergic network has gained increasing attention for its dual capacity to regulate energy balance and socio-emotional processing. In this review, we systematically integrate preclinical and clinical evidence to p

The effect of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on food craving, reward and appetite in a healthy population.

The ability to control hedonic appetite is associated with executive functioning, originating in the prefrontal cortex (PFC). These rewarding components of food can override homeostatic mechanisms, potentiating obesogenic behaviours. Indeed, those susceptible to overconsumption appear to have PFC hypo-activation. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the dorsolateral PFC (DLPFC) has been shown to reduce food craving and consumption, potentially via attenuating this reward response. We examined the effects of stimulation on food reward and craving using a healthy-weight cohort. Th

The Western diet: a blind spot of eating disorder research?-a narrative review and recommendations for treatment and research.

Over the last 50 years, in parallel with the obesity epidemic, the prevalence of eating disorders has increased and presentations have changed. In this narrative review, we consider recent research exploring the implications of changing patterns of food consumption on metabolic and neurobiological pathways, a hitherto neglected area in eating disorder research. One of the major changes over this time has been the introduction of ultra-processed (NOVA-4) foods, which are gradually replacing unprocessed and minimally processed foods. This has resulted in the increased intake of various sugars an

Attraction Versus Capture II: Efficiency of the BG-Sentinel Trap Under Semifield Conditions and Characterizing Response Behaviors of Male Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae).

Aedes aegypti (L.) is an important vector of viruses causing dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever and as such presents a serious threat to public health in tropical regions. Control programs involving 'rear and release' of modified male Ae. aegypti are underway and require effective trapping methods for surveillance of both the released insects and the impacted wild mosquito population. The BG-Sentinel trap (BGS) is widely used in Ae. aegypti surveillance but its level of efficiency, that is, what proportion of the mosquitoes encountering the trap are captured, is unknown. This is espec

Spatiotemporal encoding of search strategies by prefrontal neurons.

Working memory is capacity-limited. In everyday life we rarely notice this limitation, in part because we develop behavioral strategies that help mitigate the capacity limitation. How behavioral strategies are mediated at the neural level is unclear, but a likely locus is lateral prefrontal cortex (LPFC). Neurons in LPFC play a prominent role in working memory and have been shown to encode behavioral strategies. To examine the role of LPFC in overcoming working-memory limitations, we recorded the activity of LPFC neurons in animals trained to perform a serial self-ordered search task. This tas

Specialized and Generalized Pollen-Collection Strategies in an Ancient Bee Lineage.

Iconic examples of insect pollination have emphasized narrowly specialized pollinator mutualisms such as figs and fig wasps and yuccas and yucca moths. However, recent attention by pollination ecologists has focused on the broad spectra of pollinated plants by generalist pollinators such as bees. Bees have great impact for formulating hypotheses regarding specialization versus generalization in pollination mutualisms. We report the pollination biology of six northern European species of an extinct tribe of pollen-basket-bearing apine bees, Electrapini, of early-middle Eocene age, examined from

Human REM sleep: influence on feeding behaviour, with clinical implications.

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep shares many underlying mechanisms with wakefulness, to a much greater extent than does non-REM, especially those relating to feeding behaviours, appetite, curiosity, exploratory (locomotor) activities, as well as aspects of emotions, particularly 'fear extinction'. REM is most evident in infancy, thereafter declining in what seems to be a dispensable manner that largely reciprocates increasing wakefulness. However, human adults retain more REM than do other mammals, where for us it is most abundant during our usual final REM period (fREMP) of the night, nearing w

Central and peripheral peptides regulating eating behaviour and energy homeostasis in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa: a literature review.

A large body of literature suggests the occurrence of a dysregulation in both central and peripheral modulators of appetite in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN), but at the moment, the state or trait-dependent nature of those changes is far from being clear. It has been proposed, although not definitively proved, that peptide alterations, even when secondary to malnutrition and/or to aberrant eating behaviours, might contribute to the genesis and the maintenance of some symptomatic aspects of AN and BN, thus affecting the course and the prognosis of these disorders.
