[National immunization day evaluation in Colombia, 2001: an ecological approach].

OBJECTIVES: To determine OPV coverage impact of the 2001 national immunization day in different geographic regions and its association with the Unsatisified Basic Needs Index (NBI), forced displacement and armed conflict. METHODS: This is an analytical ecological study of multiple groups using multilevel observation units such as region, department, province and municipality. A bivariate analysis with difference between proportions between paired samples (McNemar test), estimation of OR, lineal regression and relative risk determination (Morgenstern) was carried out. In addition, protected an

Vaccination-induced syphilis and the Hübner malpractice litigation.

This article examines smallpox vaccination in the 19th century as background for a notorious medical malpractice case that occupied Bavarian courts from April 1853 until May 1854. Dr. Georg Hübner, the defendant, was accused of having initiated a small epidemic of syphilis by using the lymph of a syphilitic infant to vaccinate 13 infants. The litigation and its published contemporaneous discussion demonstrate conflicts in the understanding of syphilis, the hazards of having to make a purely clinical diagnosis, the effect of obsolete legal wording in medical litigation, and the attitude of lead

Task demands shift motor learning from adaptation to feedback control in a naturalistic bimanual task.

Most purposeful movements require the coordinated control of both hands, yet motor adaptation studies rely on highly constrained tasks that bear little resemblance to everyday bimanual actions. Here, we investigated how task demands shape control strategies during adaptation in a naturalistic bimanual object manipulation task. We tested 73 participants who lifted a virtual plate while we systematically distorted visual feedback of their right hand's movement, creating a sensory conflict between arms. Compared to unimanual, bimanual lifting shifted learning away from feedforward adaptation towa

Management and Prevention of Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria in War Casualties.

The growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a critical issue for both civilians and the military. With each successive conflict, pathogens become more resistant, making the management of infections in casualties increasingly challenging. To better understand the scope and characteristics of conflict-related AMR, a comprehensive literature search was conducted in the PubMed database in April 2025, using defined search terms related to war casualties and antimicrobial resistance. We screened and included 117 relevant publications, comprising original research articles, reviews, case

Effect of the Head Computed Tomography Choice Decision Aid in Parents of Children With Minor Head Trauma: A Cluster Randomized Trial.

IMPORTANCE: The Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network prediction rules for minor head trauma identify children at very low, intermediate, and high risk of clinically important traumatic brain injuries (ciTBIs) and recommend no computed tomography (CT) for those at very low risk. However, the prediction rules provide little guidance in the choice of home observation or CT in children at intermediate risk for ciTBI. OBJECTIVE: To compare a decision aid with usual care in parents of children at intermediate risk for ciTBI. DESIGN, SETTINGS, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cluster randomized

Beyond borders: investigating the impact of the 2023 conflict in Gaza on generalized anxiety disorders and associated somatic symptoms and wellbeing among the Kuwait population: a global call for public intervention programs.

PURPOSE: Armed conflicts can lead to devastating psychological health issues within and around conflict zones. Generalized anxiety disorder, associated somatic symptoms, and wellbeing were examined among the Kuwait population during the Gaza Conflict in 2023, in addition to exploring the provoking factors. METHODS: A descriptive, correlational cross-sectional design was used in this study. An online survey was conducted to collect information from people living in Kuwait during the Gaza Conflict. Data were collected between November 20 and November 27, 2023. The generalized anxiety disorder s…

Resurgence of cholera on the shores of Lake Tanganyika: security instability in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo as an aggravating factor and call to action.

INTRODUCTION: The Great Lakes region in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), currently affected by armed conflict, remains the ecological niche of Vibrio cholerae. Massive population displacement has increased population density in areas surrounding Lake Tanganyika, particularly in South Kivu and Tanganyika Provinces. OBJECTIVES: To describe the factors driving the persistence of cholera in this conflict-affected region and to underline the urgent need for integrated public health and humanitarian action. KEY FINDINGS: Displaced populations, often lacking shelter, sanitation, and acce

Conflict, caregiver violence and gendered parenting: A cross-sectional study among adolescent girls and young women participating in a girls' empowerment programme in Myanmar.

Across Myanmar, armed conflict and political instability have exacerbated poverty, food insecurity, and disrupted essential social protection services, severely affected people's health and wellbeing. This is especially pertinent for girls and young women, for whom gender inequalities are exacerbated during conflict, increasing their risk of various forms of violence. We aimed to measure the prevalence of parent/caregiver-perpetrated violence against adolescent girls across Myanmar and examine its association with exposure to conflict and gendered parenting practices following the 2021 militar

Limbs lost, lives changed: The unprecedented limb amputation crisis in Gaza.

Historically in armed conflicts, traumatic amputations result in long-term impacts on individuals, healthcare systems, and society. Though amputations are not new, the ongoing conflict in Gaza has resulted in an unusually high number of amputations. The scale of conflict-related amputations in Gaza, accompanied by systemic barriers to acute and rehabilitative care, necessitates feasible rehabilitation-focused responses relevant to physiatrists and global health stakeholders. The World Health Organization documentation reflects between 3105 and 4050 amputations between January 10 and May 16, 20…

Violent and non-violent death tolls for the Gaza conflict: new primary evidence from a population-representative field survey.

BACKGROUND: High-quality mortality estimates are crucial for understanding the human cost of conflict. The Gaza Ministry of Health (MoH) has provided regular updates to their violent death toll for the Gaza Strip following Oct 7, 2023, but these reports have attracted both criticism and support. Independent estimates of both violent and non-violent deaths were needed. METHODS: We conducted a population-representative household survey, the Gaza Mortality Survey, between Dec 30, 2024, and Jan 5, 2025. We surveyed 2000 households across 200 primary sampling units, documenting the vital status of

Interdisciplinary training on noncommunicable diseases and sustained change in primary health care in the context of health reform, COVID-19, and war in Ukraine: A repeated qualitative study, 2016-2022.

BACKGROUND: Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), account for nearly 90% of deaths in Ukraine, led by cardiovascular diseases and cancers. Common risk factors include tobacco and alcohol use, unhealthy diet, and physical inactivity. To improve the NCD care at the primary health care (PHC) level, the Ministry of Health and World Health Organization (WHO) introduced a two-day interdisciplinary training intervention for PHC providers - managers, doctors, nurses, and feldshers, grounded in the WHO Package of Essential Noncommunicable Disease Interventions (WHO PEN). Conducted across seven pilot regions

Neural tube defects in a war-torn Tigray regional state of Ethiopia: a retrospective study of 54,626 deliveries.

BACKGROUND: The Tigray region of Ethiopia has a significantly high prevalence of neural tube defects (NTDs), ranging from 1.31 to 2.15% of total births. The prevalence has worsened due to ongoing regional war and conflict since October 2020. This study aims to assess NTD prevalence in these challenging conditions. METHODS: This institution-based, retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted across 11 public hospitals in the Tigray region. The study reviewed all delivery records from October 2020 to December 2023. Data were collected from hospital records, focusing on cases of neural tube

Continuous chains: childhood maltreatment and intimate partner violence victimization among displaced women in a war context.

BACKGROUND: Childhood victimization has been associated with long-term psychological effects and an increased risk of being victimized in later life. Previous research has primarily focused on sexual abuse during childhood, and a wide range of consequences have been identified. However, a significant gap remains in our understanding of the complex interaction between different forms of childhood abuse and violence in later life, particularly in the context of broader social stressors such as armed conflict and displacement. METHODS: This study examines the association between exposure to diff

Evaluation of hemostatic capacities among commando candidates: Would their blood suit a hemorrhagic war-injured patient in case of blood donation on the battlefield?

BACKGROUND: In case of a warm fresh whole blood transfusion on the battlefield, the blood donation usually occurs just after a combat phase and often after several days on the fields. To explore the hemostatic capacity of such blood, we analyzed the blood of volunteers attending the commando course of the French Navy, considering this course as an experimental model, placing them into the same physiological conditions as those faced by deployed fighters. METHODS: Venous blood was collected at the beginning of the course, mimicking their baseline status, and a second time 6 weeks later, from t

Indirect impact of violent events on emergency department utilization and disease patterns.

BACKGROUND: The health effects of war and armed conflict on casualties and mental health of those directly exposed has been well described, but few studies have explored the indirect health effects of violent events. This paper assesses the indirect health impact of several violent events that took place in Beirut in 2013-2014 on ED visit utilization and disease patterns. METHODS: As tracked by media reports, there were 9 violent events in Beirut during 2013-2014. We compared visits to the Emergency Department of a major medical center during weeks when violent events happened and weeks witho

Medical evacuations out of the U.S. Central Command, active and reserve components, U.S. Armed Forces, 2019.

In 2019, there were 1,142 medical evacuations of service members from the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility that were followed by at least 1 medical encounter in a fixed medical facility outside the operational theater. There were more medical evacuations for mental health disorders than for any other single category of illnesses or injuries. The number of medical evacuations attributable to battle injuries increased steadily from 2015 through 2017 then decreased in 2018 and remained relatively stable through 2019, for an overall increase of 65.7%. The number of medical evacuations a

Effect of mild blast-induced TBI on dendritic architecture of the cortex and hippocampus in the mouse.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) has been designated as a signature injury of modern military conflicts. Blast trauma, in particular, has come to make up a significant portion of the TBIs which are sustained in warzones. Though most TBIs are mild, even mild TBI can induce long term effects, including cognitive and memory deficits. In our study, we utilized a mouse model of mild blast-related TBI (bTBI) to investigate TBI-induced changes within the cortex and hippocampus. We performed rapid Golgi staining on the layer IV and V pyramidal neurons of the parietal cortex and the CA1 basilar tree of the

Ebola, COVID-19 and Africa: What we expected and what we got.

Democratic Republic of the Congo's fight with Ebola was just settling when WHO declared COVID-19 to be a global pandemic on March 12, 2020. This has caused concomitant setbacks in the treatment and control of major health issues like HIV, tuberculosis, measles, and malaria in the country. This, coupled with civil unrest and risk to the safety of the health workers, is a 'perfect storm' waiting to unfold. Military contingents as peacekeepers are having the most difficult time, handling the situation, in the wake of risks involved.

Psychiatric care at a national mental institution during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39): Santa Isabel de Leganés.

The scanty research available regarding the health of the mentally ill during the Spanish Civil War is largely due to the loss of most documents, and to the difficulty in accessing the existing archives for decades. Up to the present time, historiography has described overcrowded facilities for the mentally disturbed and the fact that old buildings such as convents and spas were turned into establishments for treating patients with mental problems during the Civil War. However, research reviewing the institutional life and conditions of psychiatric patients during this war is still rather scar
