PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine which factors contribute to the lexical learning deficits of children with specific language impairment (SLI).
METHOD: Participants included 40 7-8-year old participants, half of whom were diagnosed with SLI and half of whom had normal language skills. We tested hypotheses about the contributions to word learning of the initial encoding of phonological information and the link to long-term memory. Children took part in a computer-based fast-mapping task which manipulated word length and phonotactic probability to address the hypotheses. The

PURPOSE: Dysprosody is considered a core feature of childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), especially impaired production of lexical stress. Few studies have tested the effects of intervention for dysprosody. This Phase II study with 3 children investigated the efficacy of a treatment targeting improved control of relative syllable durations in 3-syllable nonwords representing strong-weak (SW) and weak-strong (WS) stress patterns (e.g., BAtigu or baTIgu). Treatment sessions were structured along the principles of motor learning (PML) approach.
METHOD: Three children, age 7 to 10 years, with mild

BACKGROUND: Problems with subject-verb agreement and phonological (processing) skills have been reported to occur in children with specific language impairment (SLI) and in those with developmental dyslexia, but only a few studies have compared such problems in these two groups. Previous studies have claimed a causal relationship between phonological processing deficits and morphosyntactic problems.
AIMS: The following questions were addressed in this study: (1) Are children with developmental dyslexia and SLI comparable in the level of sensitivity to subject-verb agreement, phonological awar

Motor neuron disease encompasses a group of terminal, demyelinating diseases affecting upper- and lower-motor neurons and producing muscular weakness resulting in a flaccid, spastic, or spastic-flaccid dysarthria of speech. The present study presents measurements of the temporal-acoustic characteristics of dysarthria in three subjects with Motor Neuron Disease over a two-year recording period. Changes seen over the course of the disease varied by type of motor neuron disease, though all types demonstrated some degree of neutralization of the prevocalic VOT, target vowel duration, and postvocal

Apraxia of speech is a motor disorder characterized by the impaired ability to coordinate the sequential articulatory movements necessary to produce speech. The critical cortical area(s) involved in speech apraxia remain controversial because many of the previously reported cases had additional aphasic impairments, preventing localization of the specific cortical circuit necessary for the somatomotor execution of speech. Four patients with "pure speech apraxia" (i.e., who had no aphasic and orofacial motor impairments) are reported here. The critical lesion in all four patients involved, in th

Genetic speech and language disorders provide the opportunity to investigate the biological bases of language and its development. Critical to these investigations are the definition of behavioural phenotypes and an understanding of their interaction with epigenetic factors. Here, we report our investigations of the KE family, half the members of which are affected by a severe disorder of speech and language, which is transmitted as an autosomal-dominant monogenic trait. The cognitive manifestations of this disorder were investigated using a number of linguistic and non-linguistic tests. The a

OBJECTIVE: The appearance of fluid in tendon sheaths of the ankle joint and in ankle articulations seems to vary. To determine the degree of this variability and to see if fluid occurs in normal ankles, we evaluated the presence, amount, and distribution of joint fluid as seen on MR images of normal and abnormal ankles.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 40 normal ankles of volunteers, 15 ankles of patients with disorders of the posterior tibial tendon, 73 ankles of patients with disorders not involving tendons studied (occult fractures, osteochondritis dissecans, and Achilles tendon d

There is a dearth of qualitative research exploring eating disordered individuals' emotional responses to the sight of different types of food. In this study we asked 10 adult women diagnosed with bulimia nervosa, anorexia nervosa or an eating disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS) to articulate their thoughts whilst viewing slides of a range of different foodstuffs, during an in-depth interview session. The data were transcribed and subjected to qualitative analysis. A core theme of 'Control' was identified. Whilst control has been previously acknowledged in the literature as an important a

BACKGROUND: The International Consortium of Health Outcome Measurements (ICHOM) standard set for cleft care appraisal recommends clinicians assess articulation with percentage consonants correct (PCC) and velopharyngeal function with velopharyngeal competency rating (VPC-R). This study explores the utility and limitations of these generic measures in detecting cleft speech sound disorders by comparing them with two cleft-specific speech-rating systems, cleft audit protocol of speech-augmented Americleft modification (CAPS-A-AM) and Pittsburgh weighted speech scale (PWSS).

BACKGROUND: Currently, there is limited information on the intervention efficacy for children with speech motor delay (SMD). This randomized control trial (RCT) study examined the effectiveness of Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets (PROMPT) intervention to improve the outcomes in children with SMD. We hypothesized that children with SMD receiving PROMPT intervention would improve more in the measured outcomes than those waitlisted and receiving home training.
METHODS: Using a two-arm, parallel group, RCT, 49 children with SMD were allocated to either an intervention grou

BACKGROUND: Although many metrics for neurodevelopment in children with nonsyndromic craniosynostosis have been analyzed, few have directly examined early language acquisition and speech development. The authors characterized language acquisition and speech development in children with nonsyndromic craniosynostosis.
METHODS: The authors' institutional database was queried for nonsyndromic craniosynostosis from 2000 to 2014. Patients with an identified syndrome were excluded. Specific data elements included age, gender, velopharyngeal adequacy by means of the Pittsburgh Weighted Speech Scale,

The wrist is the most complex joint for virtual three-dimensional simulations, and the complexity is even more pronounced when dealing with skeletal disorders of the joint such, as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In order to analyse the biomechanical difference between healthy and diseased joints, three-dimensional models of these two wrist conditions were developed from computed tomography images. These images consist of eight carpal bones, five metacarpal bones, the distal radius and ulna. The cartilages were developed based on the shape of the available articulations and ligaments were simulated

INTRODUCTION: Speech and language disorders are common developmental concerns. Identifying language issues in bilingual children presents a significant challenge. In this study, we examined how bilingualism, gender and age predicted the timing and types of diagnoses in a large clinical sample of children referred to speech and language therapy (SLT) services in a Swedish healthcare setting.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of medical record data was undertaken involving 1025 children under the age of 7 referred to public speech and language clinics. Data on age, gender, bilingualism and spee

Benign and malign tumors can affect the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) as any other articulation. Nevertheless, TMJ tumors are rare and mostly benign. Their clinical expression is varied including symptomatology similar to TMJ dysfunctional disorders, otologic or neurologic pathologies. In some cases, they remain totally asymptomatic. Hence, diagnosis is difficult since the symptomatology can be misleading with TMJ dysfunctional disorders or otologic disorders wrongly diagnosed. There is thus frequently a long delay between symptoms onset and diagnosis. The great variety of TMJ lesions explains

In a sample survey study (questionnaires filled out by parents), all 40 patients with Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome (BWS) presented with macroglossia. Articulation problems were reported in 29 of them, which persisted in some following corrective tongue surgery. The impression emerges that the value of surgical treatment needs prospective assessment, that the parents are insufficiently informed, and that the adequacy of direct articulation therapy in BWS needs to be evaluated.

Persons with oral myofunctional disorders suffer from multiple risk factors for impairments. A craniofacial malformation may be responsible for both behavioral as well as structural modifications. This includes the effect of appearance on self concept and behavior (Case, 1988). Structural modifications as well as negative oral habits include: an open mouth resting posture; mouth breathing; low forward tongue carriage; forward articulatory tongue placement (linguadental/lingua alveolar); abnormal lip, tongue and facial muscle movements during swallowing; reduced upper lip length and mobility; o
