Classical insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) is relatively uncommon in Indian-Asians whether in India or in the UK and this may be related to immunogenetic factors. We have studied the presence or absence of islet cell antibodies and other auto-antibodies in 36 subjects with IDDM and 41 controls, all of Indian origin. Islet cell antibodies (ICA-IgG) were found in 8 subjects with IDDM but in none of the controls. Four of the 8 patients with ICA-IgG also possessed the complement fixing variety (CF-ICA). We determined the cause of persistent eosinophilia in 128 Indochinese refugees for whom initial comprehensive routine screening had failed to yield an explanation. Intestinal parasitism with one or multiple organisms was the cause of eosinophilia in all but six of these patients. Hookworm and Strongyloides stercoralis were among the potentially pathogenic organisms most frequently implicated (55% and 38%, respectively). To assess the effect of religious dietary practices and social customs on the vitamin D status of Asian immigrants, we kept records of the dietary intake and time spent out of doors of 81 Ugandan Asian men, women, and girls (9-19 years old). Sera were analysed for 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25-OHD3), and 28% of the subjects were found to have levels below the lower limit of normal.
