Time to return to full training and recurrence of rectus femoris injuries in elite track and field athletes 2010-2019; a 9-year study using the British Athletics Muscle Injury Classification.

Rectus femoris (RF) injuries are common in sports requiring maximal acceleration and sprinting. The British Athletics Muscle Injury Classification (BAMIC) describes acute muscle injury based on the anatomical site of injury and has been associated with return to play in hamstring and calf muscle injury. The aim of this study was to describe and compare the time to return to full training (TRFT) and injury recurrence for BAMIC-classified RF injuries sustained by elite track and field (T&F) athletes over a 9-year period. All rectus femoris injuries sustained by elite T&F athletes on the British

Youth athletes at Swedish sports high schools with an athletics specialism emphasise environmental support for injury risk management: a focus group study.

In this study, we examined knowledge and understanding of sport-related injuries among youth athletics (track and field) athletes and assessed their needs in managing any health problems. Qualitative data were collected via 12 focus groups with youth athletes (16-19 years) studying at Swedish sports high schools with an athletics specialism. All focus group discussions were audiorecorded and transcribed before being analysed using a thematic analysis approach. Four researchers independently reviewed the transcripts, generated codes and developed themes. Three overarching themes related to the

Athletic Pubalgia Secondary to Rectus Abdominis-Adductor Longus Aponeurotic Plate Injury: Diagnosis, Management, and Operative Treatment of 100 Competitive Athletes.

BACKGROUND: A rectus abdominis-adductor longus (RA-AL) aponeurotic plate injury, commonly associated with athletic pubalgia, sports hernia, or a core muscle injury, causes significant dysfunction in athletes. Increased recognition of this specific injury distinct from inguinal hernia abnormalities has led to better management of this debilitating condition. HYPOTHESIS: Surgical repair of RA-AL aponeurotic plate injuries will result in decreased symptoms and high rates of return to play. STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4. METHODS: Using our billing and clinical database, patien

Psychological resilience and sports injury among athletes: a systematic review of injury incidence, recovery processes, and psychological correlates.

BACKGROUND: It is commonly mentioned that psychological resilience is a significant protective factor in the context of sports injuries, nevertheless, the existing evidence is inconsistent, especially in terms of its changing effectiveness when moving along the injury spectrum (between risk exposure and post-injury rehabilitation). OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aimed to investigate the protective effect of resilience on sports injury outcomes in athletes and explore variations in this effect across different phases of the injury timeline. METHODS: In accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guide

Respiratory System Resistance and Bronchodilator Responsiveness in Paralympic Athletes with Spinal Cord Injury.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) may impair autonomic regulation of airway caliber, whereas repeated exposure to high ventilatory loads may modify airway function through mechanical stretch. PURPOSE: To compare airway function and bronchodilator responsiveness between elite athletes with cervical SCI (tetraplegia, TETRA) and thoracic SCI (paraplegia, PARA), with the hypothesis that bronchodilator responsiveness would be greater in TETRA. METHODS: Members of the Great Britain Paralympic team competing in wheelchair rugby (TETRA, C5-C7, n=11) or wheelchair basketball (PARA, T4-T

Acute Kidney Injury Associated With Dehydration Protocol Used by Combat Sports Athletes.

The increase in combat sports practice and the creation of weight divisions for fairer competitions led to dehydration practice as a strategy of inclusion in inferior divisions. However, this technique can damage kidney and heart functions due to alterations in blood volume. This study evaluated the acute effects of weight loss through dehydration on the kidney function of Mixed Martial Arts and Muay Thai fighters. The sample was composed of 30 athletes of both Mixed Martial Arts (n = 15) and Muay Thai (n = 15) fighters. Both groups went through two protocols for collecting data about the athl

Evidence-based Guidelines for Appropriate and Timely Management of Acute Spine Injuries in Athletes.

Although rare, sports-related spine injuries can result in devastating, life-altering consequences, with the cervical spine injury being the most common with potentially devastating consequences, including quadriplegia and immediate death from cardiopulmonary compromise. Sports remain a leading cause of spinal cord injury (SCI) in the first 3 decades of life. Early, appropriate on-field management is critical to prevent further harm and improve outcomes. This manuscript outlines current evidence-based best practices for sideline evaluation and management of athletes with suspected spine injuri

Clinical interpretation of cardiac troponin in athletes: From endurance exercise to exertional injury.

Exertional heat illness (EHI) and exertional rhabdomyolysis (ER) are increasingly recognized causes of morbidity in competitive and tactical athletes. Cardiac troponin (cTn) elevation, traditionally viewed as a marker of myocardial necrosis, may also be seen in these settings and can create significant diagnostic and prognostic uncertainty. Although transient cTn elevation after endurance exercise is common and generally benign, extrapolation of this paradigm to exertional injury is likely problematic. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence regarding cTn elevation across three rela
