Planning deficit in children with neurofibromatosis type 1: a neurocognitive trait independent from attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)?

Neurofibromatosis type 1 is associated with executive dysfunctions and comorbidity with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in 30% to 50% of children. This study was designed to clarify the neurocognitive phenotype observed in neurofibromatosis type 1 by testing the hypothesis that children with neurofibromatosis type 1 have specific planning deficits independently from intellectual level and ADHD comorbidity. Eighteen children with neurofibromatosis type 1 were pair-matched to 18 children with ADHD and 18 healthy controls. All groups were assessed on the presence of ADHD symptoms

[Progression of symptoms in children with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder in treatment with methylphenidate].

Attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurobiological disorder frequent in childhood. The main symptoms are attention disorder and/or impulsivity and/or hyperactivity. There are different subtypes of ADHD according to the degree of presence of these three symptoms. There are different therapeutic approaches with high proved effectiveness. Methylphenidate, a stimulant that acts through the dopaminergic and adrenergic pathways, is commonly used for the treatment of ADHD. The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) is a brief behavioural screening instrument internationa

Gaming disorder with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and social anxiety disorder comorbidities: A cross-sectional analysis of differences.

Problematic gaming is common among adolescents in clinical practice. We aimed to investigate the differences in motivational and psychological factors linked to gaming disorder (GD) with either comorbid attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or social anxiety disorder (SAD). We evaluated 90 adolescents for clinical diagnosis of GD according to ICD-11 definition, and for ADHD and SAD using a semi-structured diagnostic interview. The clinician scored the GD symptom measure according to symptoms defined in the ICD-11. Adolescent self-report on problematic gaming was also obtained by usin

Effect of Methylphenidate on Emotional Dysregulation in Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder + Oppositional Defiant Disorder/Conduct Disorder.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Emotional dysregulation (ED) is a frequent feature of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It can be observed as a dysregulation profile or a deficient emotional self-regulation (DESR) profile. Oppositional defiant disorder/conduct disorder (ODD/CD) comorbidity is prevalent in ADHD and known to be related with ED. The first-line treatment of ADHD includes psychostimulants, but their effects on ED are not well studied. This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of methylphenidate (MPH) treatment on ED in ADHD + ODD/CD cases. METHODS: A total of 118 ADHD + ODD/CD

[Family-based psychosocial interventions for children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder, and conduct disorder].

Psychosocial family-based interventions--family therapy, cognitive-behavioral parent training and family-based treatment protocols--are empirically supported treatments for children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder, and conduct disorder. Well-researched interventions such as remote and group-based parent training programs relate to improvements in parenting quality, positive parenting, and the child's decreased ADHD and conduct behavioral problems, whereas individual family-based treatments are sometimes required, depending on symptom severity

Effects of methylphenidate, desipramine, and L-dopa on attention and inhibition in children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of methylphenidate (MPH) on attention and inhibition in children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and to establish what the relative contributions of the noradrenergic and dopaminergic systems to this effect were. In addition to MPH, two other drugs were administered in order to affect both transmitter systems more selectively, L-dopa (dopamine (DA) agonist) and desipramine (DMI) (noradrenaline (NA) re-uptake inhibitor). Sixteen children with ADHD performed a stop-task, a laboratory task that measures the ability to

Abnormal amygdala functional connectivity associated with emotional lability in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: A substantial proportion of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) also display emotion regulation deficits manifesting as chronic irritability, severe temper outbursts, and aggression. The amygdala is implicated in emotion regulation, but its connectivity and relation to emotion regulation in ADHD has yet to be explored. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between intrinsic functional connectivity (iFC) of amygdala circuits and emotion regulation deficits in youth with ADHD. METHOD: Bilateral amygdala iFC was examined using functional m

Altered brain morphology in boys with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder with and without comorbid conduct disorder/oppositional defiant disorder.

About 50% of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) patients suffer from comorbidity with oppositional defiant disorder/conduct disorder (ODD/CD). Most previous studies on structural morphology did not differentiate between pure (ADHD-only) and comorbid ADHD (ADHD+ODD/CD). Therefore, we aimed to investigate the structural profile of ADHD-only versus ADHD+ODD/CD spanning the indices subcortical and cortical volume, cortical thickness, and surface area. We predicted a reduced total gray matter, striatal, and cerebellar volume in both patient groups and a reduced amygdalar and hippocampa

Paraphilias and paraphilic disorders in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: an observational study.

Individuals with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are more likely than the general population to exhibit increased sexual desire and to engage in risky sexual behaviors. Emerging evidence also links ADHD to a heightened risk of sexual offenses and recidivism. While certain paraphilias and paraphilic disorders are known risk factors for sexual offending, it remains unclear whether they are more prevalent in individuals with ADHD than in the general population. This preliminary study investigated the prevalence of paraphilias and paraphilic disorders among 50 adults with ADHD and

Mental Health and Personality Disorders: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Adults.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by the inability to regulate attention and/or symptoms of hyperactivity that interfere with some level of daily functioning. Although this disorder is well-recognized in children, it is less frequently diagnosed and treated in adults. The pathogenesis of ADHD is not well understood, but norepinephrine and dopamine appear to play roles in the disorder because they modulate the area of the brain involved in attention and behavior regulation. ADHD has a high comorbidity rate, particularly with substance use disorder. Screening for A

Acetaminophen in Pregnancy and Attention-Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Acetaminophen is a common over-the-counter medication that recently gained substantial media attention regarding its use by pregnant individuals. In this clinical perspective, we discuss the strengths and limitations of the published literature on the effect of maternal acetaminophen use in pregnancy on the child's risk of developing attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Studies included were specifically selected on the basis of the quality and validity of ADHD or ASD outcome definitions. From a total of 56 identified studies, commentaries, an

Childhood symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and borderline personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood attention-deficit /hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is known to be associated with adult Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). We investigated if any of the subdimensions of childhood ADHD, that is, impulsivity, inattention, or hyperactivity was more prominent in this association. METHODS: In a nation-wide cohort (N = 13,330), we utilized parent reported symptoms of childhood ADHD and clinically ascertained adult BPD diagnoses. The summed total scores of ADHD symptoms and its three subdimensions were used and standardized for effect size comparison. Associations were analyz

[Concordances between autism spectrum disorders and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder].

INTRODUCTION: The current literature acknowledges an overlap of genetic, clinical and neuropsychological aspects between autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), suggesting that there may be a common pattern that covers features ranging from the common genetic and structural aetiology to shared patterns of symptoms. AIM: To review the current advances in these common aspects. DEVELOPMENT: Several studies have pointed out preschool attentional difficulties as the basis of both disorders. From the genetic perspective, it is estimated that 50-72% of th

Basal ganglia structure in Tourette's disorder and/or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Tourette's disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder often co-occur and have both been associated with structural variation of the basal ganglia. However, findings are inconsistent and comorbidity is often neglected. METHODS: T1-weighted magnetic resonance images from children (n = 141, 8 to 12 years) with Tourette's disorder and/or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and controls were processed with the Oxford Centre for Functional MRI [Magnetic resonance imaging] of the Brain (FMRIB) integrated registration and segmentation tool to determine basal ganglia nuclei
