Limited Prosocial Emotions in a Clinical Population of Children and Adolescents: Proposal for Core and Ancillary Characteristics.

OBJECTIVE: Limited prosocial emotions (LPE) has been recently incorporated into international classifications as a specifier for conduct disorder in the DSM-5 and for all disruptive behavioural disorders in the ICD-11. The aims of the current work were to determine (a) the accuracy of each of the characteristics used to assess the LPE specifier and (b) whether the manner in which symptoms group together supports the idea of LPE having core characteristics. METHOD: Trained clinicians conducted interviews and determined LPE characteristics using responses from 74 parent/guardian and child/adole

Diagnostic Trends and Prescription Patterns in Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder and Bipolar Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD) was introduced in DSM-5 to distinguish a subset of chronically irritable youth who may be incorrectly diagnosed and/or treated for pediatric bipolar disorder (BPD). This study characterized the rate of new treatment episodes and treated prevalence of BPD and DMDD from a longitudinal electronic health record database and examined the impact of DMDD on prescription trends. METHOD: A retrospective cohort study using 2008-2018 Optum electronic health record data was conducted. Youth aged 10 to < 18 years with ≥ 183 days of database enrollme

ADHD and Disruptive Behavior scores - associations with MAO-A and 5-HTT genes and with platelet MAO-B activity in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Pharmacological and genetic studies suggest the importance of the dopaminergic, serotonergic, and noradrenergic systems in the pathogenesis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Disruptive Behavior Disorder (DBD). We have, in a population-based sample, studied associations between dimensions of the ADHD/DBD phenotype and Monoamine Oxidase B (MAO-B) activity in platelets and polymorphisms in two serotonergic genes: the Monoamine Oxidase A Variable Number of Tandem Repeats (MAO-A VNTR) and the 5-Hydroxytryptamine Transporter gene-Linked Polymorphic Region (5-HTT LPR)

Parenting Behaviors as Mediators of the Association Between Parental Internalizing Symptoms and Child Externalizing Symptoms.

This study analyzes whether the association between parental internalizing symptoms (depression, anxiety, stress) and child symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is mediated by positive and negative parenting behaviors. Cross-sectional data of 420 parents of children (age 6-12 years) with elevated levels of externalizing symptoms were collected in a randomized controlled trial. Measures included parent ratings of their internalizing symptoms and parenting behaviors and of their child's externalizing symptoms. Two mediation models wer

Pre-Existing Comorbid Emotional Symptoms Moderate Short-Term Methylphenidate Adverse Effects in a Randomized Trial of Children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

Objective: We sought to ascertain whether baseline anxiety/depression and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms impacted the experience of short-term methylphenidate (MPH) adverse effects (AEs) in 7- to 11-year-old children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (n = 171) undergoing a double-blind MPH crossover trial. Method: The Vanderbilt ADHD Diagnostic Parent Rating Scale measured baseline child anxiety/depression and ODD symptomology. The parent-completed Pittsburgh Side Effect Rating Scale assessed the AEs of anxiety, sadness, and irritability at baseline, on placebo

Behavioral and electrophysiological indicators of auditory distractibility in children with ADHD and comorbid ODD.

Involuntary switching of attention to distracting sounds was studied by measuring effects of these events on auditory discrimination performance and event-related brain potentials (ERPs) in 6-11-year-old boys with Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and comorbid Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and in age-matched controls. The children were instructed to differentiate between two animal calls by pressing one response button, for example, to a dog bark and another button to a cat mew. These task-relevant sounds were presented from one of two loudspeakers in front of the child, an

Evaluating a comprehensive strategy to improve engagement to group-based behavioral parent training for high-risk families of children with ADHD.

Behavioral parent training (BPT) is an evidence-based intervention for the treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and related disruptive behavioral disorders of childhood. Despite convincing data on effectiveness, engagement to BPT, particularly for high-risk families, has been a long standing, yet understudied, issue. Data from a clinical trial of a comprehensive BPT approach to enhance engagement and outcomes (the Strategies to Enhance Positive Parenting [STEPP] program) are presented herein. The STEPP program was compared to a traditional group-based BPT program on pro

Psychological symptoms in youth and later socioeconomic functioning: do associations vary by informant?

We examined whether associations between symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), depression, and anxiety assessed in a sample of 2,026 youth aged 6 to 16 years and socioeconomic functioning measured 18 years later varied as a function of whether parents or teachers had rated symptomatology. After accounting for confounding variables (e.g., family socioeconomic status in childhood), psychological symptoms explained 2.78% of the variability in adult socioeconomic status. Much of that variance was unique to teachers or parents (0.90% and 1

ODD, ADHD, versus ODD+ADHD in clinic and community adults.

OBJECTIVE: To seek evidence for the validity of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) as a behavioral syndrome in adults. METHOD: Two samples of adults, mental health outpatient clinic referrals (N = 490) and community controls (N = 900), completed a Diagnostic and Statistic Manual of Mental Disorders-referenced rating scale and a brief questionnaire (social, educational, occupational, and treatment variables). Participants were separated into four groups: ODD-only, ADHD-only, ODD+ADHD, and NONE. RESULTS: In general, the three symptom groups were more severe than the NONE group; the ODD+ADHD a

Externalizing disorders and substance use: empirically derived subtypes in a population-based sample of adults.

PURPOSE: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), conduct disorder (CD), and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) are common externalizing disorders of childhood. The common effects of these disorders on substance abuse need further investigation. The current study investigated the joint clusters of childhood/adolescence ADHD, CD, and ODD, and their influence on substance abuse/dependence in a population-based sample of adults. METHODS: The data were drawn from the PsyCoLaus study (n = 3,720) conducted in Lausanne, Switzerland. The population-based sample included 238 subjects meeting

Latent profiles of mood: Toward an empirical definition of mixed mood in youth.

Mixed mood states are a common presentation of pediatric mood disorders. However, their representation in categorical and dimensional taxonomies are misaligned with empirical findings, delaying treatment, and worsening outcomes for youth with mood disorders. To mitigate these negative outcomes, taxonomic representation of mixed mood states (e.g., concomitant symptoms and placement within taxonomic structure) must be reassessed. Therefore, the present study aimed to build empirical definitions of mood disorder dimensions and categorical episode presentations, including mixed mood states, using

Behavioral parent training for disruptive behaviors in school-age children with autism: Secondary outcomes of a randomized controlled trial.

Children with autism often show disruptive behavior problems, which may cause significant impairment. Behavioral parent training is an effective intervention for other children with disruptive behavior, but research in children with autism is relatively scarce. We here report the secondary outcomes of a three-arm randomized controlled trial, comparing face-to-face and blended parent training to a waitlist control condition for children with autism and disruptive behavior. We previously found that face-to-face, but not blended parent training, relative to waitlist control, significantly improve

Maternal Smoking During Pregnancy and Conduct Problems: A Short Review of the Current Literature.

AIMS: Several studies have indicated an association between smoking during pregnancy and offspring externalizing disorders, Conduct Disorder (CD), and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD); however, it is uncertain whether this relationship is causal. We conducted a narrative review to determine if the literature supports a causal role of maternal smoking during pregnancy on offspring externalizing disorders diagnosis. METHODS: Articles were sought in PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus bibliographical databases (end-of-search date: February 2, 2024). We included any study that investigated mate

Emotion regulation as central to psychopathology across childhood and adolescence: a commentary on Nobakht et al. (2023).

An important goal of clinical/developmental research is to identify factors contributing to the onset and maintenance of psychopathology - particularly factors that could be modified through intervention. Large-scale, multi-informant, longitudinal studies provide valuable opportunities for testing such etiological hypotheses, as illustrated by Nobakht et al.'s recent six-wave cohort study spanning ages 4-14. At a within-person level, emotion regulation (ER) deficits consistently predicted oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms (including both irritability and defiance), whereas victimiza

Irritability, Defiant and Obsessive-Compulsive Problems Development from Childhood to Adolescence.

Little is known about the coexistence of oppositionality and obsessive-compulsive problems (OCP) in community children and how it affects their development until adolescence to prevent possible dysfunctions. The co-development of oppositional defiant dimensions and OCP is studied in 563 children (49.7% female) from ages 6 to 13 years, assessed yearly with measures answered by parents and teachers. A 4-class model based on Latent Class Growth Analysis for three parallel processes (irritability, defiant, and OCP) was selected, which showed adequate fitting indexes. Class 1 (n = 349, 62.0%) child
