Audiologic and electrophysiologic evaluation in children with psychiatric disorders.

UNLABELLED: Individuals with psychiatric disorders can present perception, attention and memory deficits, raising doubts about peripheral and/or central hearing loss. Thus, the aim of this study is to describe the audiological and electrophysiological results of individuals with psychiatric disorders, looking for peripheral and/or central auditory disorders. METHODS: 20 individuals with autism and Asperger syndrome and 20 individuals without psychiatric disorders from eight to 19 years of age, were submitted to audiological and electrophysiological evaluation. RESULTS: No alterations were ob

"Sequence Agnosia" in Bálint's syndrome: defects in visuotemporal processing after bilateral parietal damage.

Bálint's syndrome is characterized by visuospatial dysfunction, with failure to attend to multiple objects in space and poor spatial localization manifested as impaired reaching and saccadic targeting. Less investigated in this disorder is perceptual processing along the dimension of time. We studied the performance of a patient with Bálint's syndrome on two oddity paradigms in which she had to indicate which of three objects was different in color, shape, or structure. Her initial difficulty with processing multiple objects present simultaneously in different locations recovered, but she had

Exploring the Characteristics of Functional Dysphonia by Multimodal Methods.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the characteristics of functional dysphonia (FD) using multimodal methods. METHODS: A total of 47 FD patients and a group of 22 normal controls were enrolled. Subjective auditory-perceptual assessment of the voice, Voice Handicap Index (VHI) 30, acoustic analysis, psychological scales assessment, surface electromyography (sEMG), nasal airflow and thoracoabdominal studies were performed. RESULTS: FD was mostly triggered by mood changes. Patient self-evaluation was more serious than auditory-perceptual evaluation and objective acoustic analysis. There was no obvious orga

Auditory gating and its clinical correlates in adults with chronic tic disorder and neurotypical adults.

BACKGROUND: Over 80% of adults with chronic tic disorder (CTD) experience sensory over-responsivity (SOR), defined as heightened awareness of and/or behavioral reactivity to commonplace environmental stimuli. One potential mechanism underpinning SOR is sensory gating impairment. Sensory gating is the physiologic process whereby redundant stimuli are filtered out in early perceptual stages. In this study, we compared sensory gating between neurotypical and CTD adults and determined if gating indices associated with SOR. METHODS: Neurotypical (n = 31) and CTD adults (n = 26) completed a clinica

What's the buzz? The neuroscience and the treatment of tinnitus.

Tinnitus is a pervasive public health issue that affects ∼15% of the United States population. Similar estimates have also been shown on a global scale, with similar prevalence found in Europe, Asia, and Africa. The severity of tinnitus is heterogeneous, ranging from mildly bothersome to extremely disruptive. In the United States, ∼10-20% of individuals who experience tinnitus report symptoms that severely reduce their quality of life. Due to the huge personal and societal burden, in the last 20 yr a concerted effort on basic and clinical research has significantly advanced our understanding a

Cochlear implantation in children with congenital X-linked deafness due to novel mutations in POU3F4 gene.

OBJECTIVES: We report novel mutations in the POU3F4 gene resulting in congenital X-linked deafness DFN3, and describe the results of cochlear implantation in 4 boys (3 siblings) followed for an average of 3.5 years. METHODS: The diagnosis of DFN3 was made in infant boys on the basis of the radiologic criteria of an underdeveloped modiolus, a wide cochlear fossette, and the presence of all cochlear turns. The POU3F4 gene was sequenced. A standard, transmastoid, facial recess approach was used for cochlear implantation. A lumbar drain was placed before the operation. RESULTS: The identified mu

Stable quantitative EEG difference in post-LSD visual disorder by split-half analysis: evidence for disinhibition.

Hallucinogen persisting perceptual disorder (HPPD) may follow the ingestion of LSD or other hallucinogens in a subset of users. It is characterized by chronic, intermittent or constant visual hallucinations of many sorts persisting beyond the period of acute drug effects. We studied 44 LSD-induced HPPD subjects and 88 matched controls to search for spectral and evoked potential differences using quantitative EEG (qEEG). HPPD subjects demonstrated faster alpha frequency and shorter VER (visual evoked response) latency, consistent with prior animal and human data on response to acute LSD adminis

The Correlation Between Perceptual Ratings and Nasalance Scores in Resonance Disorders: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Assessment of resonance characteristics is essential in research and clinical practice in individuals with velopharyngeal impairment. The purpose of this study was to systematically review correlations between auditory-perceptual ratings and nasalance scores obtained by a nasometer in individuals with resonance disorders and to identify factors that affected the correlations between these two measures. METHOD: Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, a systematic search was conducted for studies reporting a correlation between nasa

Decreased temporal precision of neuronal signaling as a candidate mechanism of auditory processing disorder.

The sense of hearing is the fastest of our senses and provides the first all-or-none action potential in the auditory nerve in less than four milliseconds. Short stimulus evoked latencies and their minimal variability are hallmarks of auditory processing from spiral ganglia to cortex. Here, we review how even small changes in first spike latencies (FSL) and their variability (jitter) impact auditory temporal processing. We discuss a number of mouse models with degraded FSL/jitter whose mutations occur exclusively in the central auditory system and therefore might serve as candidates to investi

Evidence for a general auditory processing deficit in developmental dyslexia from a discrimination paradigm using speech versus nonspeech sounds matched in complexity.

PURPOSE: It is unknown whether phonological deficits are the primary cause of developmental dyslexia or whether they represent a secondary symptom resulting from impairments in processing basic acoustic parameters of speech. This might be due, in part, to methodological difficulties. Our aim was to overcome two of these difficulties: the comparability of stimulus material and task in speech versus nonspeech conditions. METHOD: In this study, the authors (a) assessed auditory processing of German vowel center stimuli, spectrally rotated versions of these stimuli, and bands of formants; (b) use

Perception of musical pitch in developmental prosopagnosia.

Studies of developmental prosopagnosia have often shown that developmental prosopagnosia differentially affects human face processing over non-face object processing. However, little consideration has been given to whether this condition is associated with perceptual or sensorimotor impairments in other modalities. Comorbidities have played a role in theories of other developmental disorders such as dyslexia, but studies of developmental prosopagnosia have often focused on the nature of the visual recognition impairment despite evidence for widespread neural anomalies that might affect other s

[Differential language comprehension disorders: results of an explorative study].

OBJECTIVES: Deficits in the expressive language abilities of children are easily observed. Thus these children usually are detected early and receive appropriate professional help. Receptive language abilities are much more difficult to assess, so that deficits either go unnoticed or often are not treated early. METHODS: In a population of 100 children examined between 1993 and 1995 in the outpatient department for speech, language and behavior problems at the Heckscher Klinik in Munich-Solln and diagnosed as having clinically relevant deficits in language comprehension, we determined the ICD

How right hemisphere damage after stroke can impair speech comprehension.

Acquired language disorders after stroke are strongly associated with left hemisphere damage. When language difficulties are observed in the context of right hemisphere strokes, patients are usually considered to have atypical functional anatomy. By systematically integrating behavioural and lesion data from brain damaged patients with functional MRI data from neurologically normal participants, we investigated when and why right hemisphere strokes cause language disorders. Experiment 1 studied right-handed patients with unilateral strokes that damaged the right (n = 109) or left (n = 369) hem

Visual and Auditory Verbal Hallucinations in Schizophrenia and Their Relation to Self-Disorders.

INTRODUCTION: The current definition of hallucinations as perception-like experiences has been criticized for neglecting their experiential character and context. This study examined the phenomenology of auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs) and visual hallucinations (VHs) in schizophrenia and their relation to other psychopathology, particularly basic self-disorders. METHODS: Twenty patients with schizophrenia-spectrum psychosis and hallucinations participated in phenomenologically oriented, semi-structured interviews exploring the experiential characteristics and context of AVH and VH as we

Performance of Different Acoustic Measures to Discriminate Individuals With and Without Voice Disorders.

The goal of this study is to compare and combine different acoustic features in discriminating subjects with and without voice disorders. A database of 484 adult patients participated in the research. All subjects recorded a sustained vowel /Ɛ/ and underwent a laryngoscopic examination of the larynx. From the results of the laryngeal examination performed by a physician and the auditory-perceptual judgment performed by a Speech-Language Pathologist, the subjects were allocated to the group with (n = 52) and without (n = 432) voice disorder. Four types of acoustic features were used: traditiona

The phenomenology of auditory verbal hallucinations in bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVES: At least one in four persons with bipolar disorder (BD) are estimated to have experienced auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) or heard voices at some point. Yet few studies have investigated AVH in detail in this population. This preliminary study examined the phenomenology of AVH in BD to identify commonalities and differences relative to other psychiatric disorders where AVH are commonly reported. METHOD: Twenty-one participants diagnosed with BD were recruited across two international sites in the UK and Australia. All participants underwent a structured clinical interview to

Expressive versus receptive language skills in specific reading disorder.

Despite ample research into the language skills of children with specific reading disorder no studies so far have investigated whether there may be a difference between expressive and receptive language skills in this population. Yet, neuro-anatomical models would predict that children who have specific reading disorder which is not associated with movement or attention difficulties, would have lower receptive language skills than expressive. This study investigates the difference between expressive and receptive language skills in a sample of 17 children with specific reading difficulty aged

Metacognitions in patients with hallucinations and obsessive-compulsive disorder: the superstition factor.

On the basis of the analogy between intrusive thoughts and auditory hallucinations established by Morrison et al. [(1995). Intrusive thoughts and auditory hallucinations: a cognitive approach. Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy, 23, 265-280], the present work compares the metacognitive beliefs and processes of five groups of patients (current hallucinators, never-hallucinated people with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, recovered hallucinators, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) patients, and a clinical control group) and a non-clinical group. The results show that of the five metacognitive

Negative consequences of uncorrected hearing loss--a review.

Hearing loss gives rise to a number of disabilities. Problems in recognizing speech, especially in difficult environments, give rise to the largest number of complaints. Other kinds of disabilities may concern the reduced ability to detect, identify and localize sounds quickly and reliably. Such sounds may be warning or alarm signals, as well as music and birds singing. The communicative disability affects both hearing-impaired people and other people in their environment--family members, fellow workers, etc. Hearing-impaired people are not always aware of all the consequences of the impairmen
