A population-based cohort of adult patients with diabetes mellitus in a Western District of Austria: The Diabetes Landeck cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes mellitus (DM) has become an important and exacerbating health epidemic, with severe consequences for both patients and health systems. The National Diabetes Strategy of Austria addresses the lack of high-quality data on DM in Austria and the need for developing a national data network. The aims of our study are to establish a cohort including all adult diabetes patients in a district in western Austria, describe the demographic and clinical characteristics of this cohort, and provide an estimation of diabetes prevalence. METHODS: We recruited a population-based cohort o…

Prevalence of anemia in pregnant women in Styria, Austria-A retrospective analysis of mother-child examinations 2006-2014.

BACKGROUND: Many women suffer from anemia during their pregnancy. Austria, a central European country, has an instituted mandatory prenatal care system and therein two anemia screening tests (before end of week 16 and in weeks 25-28) are scheduled. Epidemiological data on the prevalence of anemia in pregnant women in Austria are missing. METHODS: We analysed data from Styria, an Austrian federal state, to determine the prevalence of anemia diagnosed in pregnant women aged 15-45 years with at least one examination in the first and second time period using the cut-off hemoglobin (Hb) concentrat…

[Quality characteristics in 24-hour care from the perspective of those affected - Results of a pilot study in Austria].

Quality characteristics in 24-hour care from the perspective of those affected. Results of a pilot study in Austria Abstract. Background: Of the almost 460 000 recipients of care allowance in Austria, 80 % are cared for at home. In 2018, more than 32 000 people were cared for at home by a total of almost 65 000 24-hour caregivers. Isolated work situations in combination with complex illnesses of the clients, often inadequate training and a lack of language skills of the personal carers have a challenging effect on the quality of care. Aim: The aim of the pilot study is to describe quality char…

Dirofilaria in Humans, Dogs, and Vectors in Austria (1978-2014)-From Imported Pathogens to the Endemicity of Dirofilaria repens.

BACKGROUND: Dirofilaria repens and D. immitis are filarioid helminths with domestic and wild canids as main hosts and mosquitoes as vectors. Both species are known to cause zoonotic diseases, primarily pulmonary (D. immitis), ocular (D. repens), and subcutaneous (D. repens) dirofilariosis. Both D. immitis and D. repens are known as invasive species, and their distribution seems associated with climate change. Until very recently, both species were known to be nonendemic in Austria. METHODOLOGY AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Metadata on introduced and possibly autochthonous cases of infection with Di…

Cross-sectional study to evaluate the longitudinal development of child and adolescent psychiatric diagnoses of inpatients in Vorarlberg, Austria.

UNLABELLED: Clinical experience has repeatedly shown evidence for continuity between mental disorders in children and adolescents and mental disorders in adulthood. Up to now, Austria has had no epidemiologic data on psychiatric diseases in children and adolescents and their development into adulthood. How often do children and adolescents with psychiatric diseases have psychiatric diseases in adulthood? Is there any association between psychiatric diagnoses in childhood/adolescence and adulthood? Electronic medical records provided us with data on 2210 children and adolescents who were admitt…

Whole genome sequencing as a tool to investigate a cluster of seven cases of listeriosis in Austria and Germany, 2011-2013.

A cluster of seven human cases of listeriosis occurred in Austria and in Germany between April 2011 and July 2013. The Listeria monocytogenes serovar (SV) 1/2b isolates shared pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and fluorescent amplified fragment length polymorphism (fAFLP) patterns indistinguishable from those from five food producers. The seven human isolates, a control strain with a different PFGE/fAFLP profile and ten food isolates were subjected to whole genome sequencing (WGS) in a blinded fashion. A gene-by-gene comparison (multilocus sequence typing (MLST)+) was performed, and the …

Characterization of clinical Clostridium difficile isolates by PCR ribotyping and detection of toxin genes in Austria, 2006-2007.

In order to assess the lethality of Clostridium difficile-associated disease (CDAD) and the PCR ribotypes prevalent in Austria, the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety requested isolates of C. difficile from patients in a structured but arbitrary sampling scheme. In the allocated period from February 2006 to January 2007, local hospital laboratories within each of the nine provinces were asked to submit C. difficile isolates from at least ten cases of CDAD. Confirmation of species identification, toxin detection, susceptibility testing against four antimicrobial agents and typing using …

Invasive meningococcal disease in Austria 2002: assessment of completeness of notification by comparison of two independent data sources.

AIM OF THE STUDY: The notified incidence of meningococcal disease in European countries varies from <1 case per 100,000 inhabitants to approximately 7 cases per 100,000. Assessing the true burden of disease is important for setting priorities in health services and for estimating the benefit of interventions such as vaccination. Completeness and timeliness of reporting is also essential for the early recognition of outbreaks. The objective of this study was to assess the completeness of surveillance data on invasive meningococcal disease in Austria at the National Reference Center for Meningoc…

Follow-up of epidemiological data of cryptococcosis in Austria, Germany and Switzerland with special focus on the characterization of clinical isolates.

The present survey in Austria, Germany and Switzerland continued the survey of cryptococcosis set up by the European Confederation of Medical Mycology (ECMM) in 1997. From 2000 to 2003 77 cases have been reported. An HIV infection is still the most important risk factor (68%). Young HIV+ women from ASIA contributed to the increase of cryptococcosis in females. A total of 129 clinical isolates of both surveys were genotyped by PCR fingerprinting to study the prevalence of different genotypes. The prevalence of Cryptococcus neoformans var. grubii (serotype A) with the genotypes VNA1 and VNA2 was…

Outbreak of an Emerging Recombinant of Myxoma Virus ha-MYXV in European Brown Hares (Lepus europaeus) in Austria.

Myxomatosis, caused by the myxoma virus (MYXV), is a severe disease primarily affecting European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus), with very high case fatality rates. Historically, MYXV was introduced to Europe and Australia in the 1950s to control rabbit populations, becoming endemic and undergoing genetic adaptations. In 2018, a novel recombinant variant, hare-adapted MYXV (ha-MYXV), emerged in Spain, causing significant declines in Iberian hare (Lepus granatensis) populations. This study reports the first outbreak of ha-MYXV in Austria, severely affecting European brown hares (Lepus europaeu…

Exploring Inclusion in Austria's Breast Cancer Screening:A Dual-Perspective Study of Women with Intellectual Disabilities and Their Caregivers.

Women with intellectual disabilities (IDs) face persistent health inequities, particularly in preventive services such as breast cancer screening, where participation rates remain disproportionately low. These disparities contribute to higher mortality and poorer survivorship outcomes, often linked to later-stage diagnoses. To better understand these challenges and inform the development of inclusive screening programs, this qualitative study conducted in Austria explored barriers, facilitators, and needs related to breast cancer screening from the dual perspectives of 17 women with mild-to-mo…

The role of self-management in endometriosis pain: insights from a cross-sectional survey in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis has a significant negative impact on women's lives. Unfortunately, current medical treatments often fail to provide adequate pain relief and may cause intolerable side effects. Although many women experiencing primary dysmenorrhoea employ self-management strategies to help alleviate period-related symptoms, there is a paucity of knowledge about how women with endometriosis manage their symptoms through self-management. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was distributed in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, between August and December 2022, targeting women aged …

Year-round tick exposure of dogs and cats in Germany and Austria: results from a tick collection study.

BACKGROUND: Ticks and tick-borne diseases play a major role in companion animal health. Additionally, the European tick fauna is changing, for instance due to the spread of Dermacentor reticulatus, displaying a higher likelihood of winter activity than Ixodes ricinus. Therefore, we investigated current tick infestations in dogs and cats in Germany and in parts of Austria and the seasonal infestation risk. METHODS: Overall, 219 veterinary practices were invited to collect ticks from cats and dogs on a monthly basis. Ticks were morphologically identified and female I. ricinus specimens were mea…

Changes in the nutrient profile and the load of mycotoxins, phytoestrogens, and pesticides in horse pastures during spring and summer in Austria.

Pastures are used for grazing and the production of conserved roughage in horses. Yet, the nutritional profile of the forage varies from spring to late summer, affecting equine nutrient supply and health. In addition, environmental factors may also favor plant contaminants such as mycotoxins. This study aimed to determine the nutritional profile and contaminant load of selected horse pastures from early spring till late summer. The nutrient composition (main macronutrients, macro elements and trace elements), as well as mycotoxins, metabolites, pesticides, and plant-derived compounds of seven

Provision of Electroconvulsive Therapy During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Survey Among Clinics in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had a marked impact on psychiatry. Capacity reductions also affected electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), even though ECT is an essential rather than an elective procedure. We sent a survey to all 197 clinics in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland with an ECT service between March and May 2021 to provide an overview of the changes made to ECT services in these countries during the acute phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. More than a quarter of the clinics (27.0%) reported a temporary suspension of all ECT treatments, and 28.2% of the clinics reported…
