Decompression sickness has not previously been reported at altitudes below 16,000 ft (4,878m), unless the patient had been previously exposed to hyperbaric conditions (SCUBA). There are some underdocumented reports at lower altitudes. We are reporting a suspected case of bends appearing at 14,000 ft (4,268m) in a young student Naval aviator. The patient's only predisposing factors were an old athletic injury repaired with a permanently retained screw (foreign body) and a regular exercise program. A short discussion of bends is included.

Realistic training in aviation now includes the use of sophisticated flight simulators which can provide near total perception of aircraft flight. Reports of simulator sickness seem to be increasing in simulators with multi-directional motion, computer-generated imagery, and infinity optics. The objective of this work is to advance the understanding of helicopter accidents by examining and quantifying the association between helicopter-specific configurations (number of main rotor blades, number of engines, rotor diameter, and takeoff weight) and the likelihood of accidents. The author reports that relatively frequent injuries to the thorax and to the heart are established in autopsies of aircraft fatalities. A review of 128 autopsy protocols of aircraft accident fatalities revealed 111 cases of severe contact injuries to the thorax and 98 cases of traumatic injuries to the pericardium and the heart. Accepting the fact that persons injured if traffic accidents display cardiac injuries in 25% of the cases, the number of traumatic heart lesions inflicted in persons in aircarft accidents is three times as high, a fact which may be attributed to the far higher speeds
