BACKGROUND: Syphilis incidence has been rising in the United States since 2000. Shifts in syphilis epidemic phases may be associated with changes between or within high-risk populations.

The social meaning of cocaine changed during the 1980 s and 1990s. The present study examined changes in the psychological profile of cocaine users. We used Baltimore data of the National Institute of Mental Health-funded Epidemiologic Catchment Area study during 1981 (n = 3,006; 60% female) and 1993-1994 (n = 1,679; 52% female). The diagnostic interview schedule measured cocaine use and depressive disorders (dysthymia, major depressive disorder). A retrospective study of all patients who underwent splenectomy during the 20-year period, 1960 to 1979, for hereditary spherocytosis at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, identified 58 patients, of whom 20 (33%) were 15 years of age or older. Accessory splenic tissue was located in ten (17%) of the patients. Although cholelithiasis was present in only 12 (21%) of the total cohort, when analyzed for patients 10 years of age or older the incidence was 41% (11/27). We examined whether previously incarcerated individuals with self-reported psychotic symptoms were more likely to endorse a history of solitary confinement. A community-based sample of 176 previously incarcerated individuals residing in Baltimore or New York City were surveyed on prison experiences and mental health symptoms. The Streptomyces strains CHR3 and CHR28, isolated from the Baltimore Inner Harbor, contained two and one, respectively, giant linear plasmids which carry terminally bound proteins. Data were collected from all incident reports of low back injury during 1984-1986 among nursing aides at one hospital and home health aides at two agencies in the Baltimore-Washington area. Respective rates of injury were 5.9/100 FTE's and 15.4/100 FTE's (p < 0.001). A majority of injuries occurred during patient-related, planned activities and without the use of lifting equipment. A total of 810 adults were examined by psychiatrists in the second stage of the Eastern Baltimore Mental Health Survey. A semistructured examination, the Standard Psychiatric Examination, was used. The relationships between obsessions and compulsions and personal characteristics, childhood behaviors, family history, and other psychopathology were evaluated. The pathogenesis of dissecting aneurysms of the aorta is controversial. We reviewed the records of the 204 patients with aortic dissecting aneurysms who underwent autopsy at the John Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, from 1889 to the present and compared them with age-, race-, and sex-matched controls. BACKGROUND: Hospital-acquired functional decline due to decreased mobility has negative impacts on patient outcomes. Current nurse-directed mobility programs lack a standardized approach to set achievable mobility goals.
PURPOSE: We aimed to describe implementation and outcomes from a nurse-directed patient mobility program.
METHOD: The quality improvement mobility program on the project unit was compared to a similar control unit providing usual care. The Johns Hopkins Mobility Goal Calculator was created to guide a daily patient mobility goal based on the level of mobility impairment.
