State abortion context and U.S. women's contraceptive choices, 1995-2010.

CONTEXT: The number of women in the United States exposed to restrictive abortion policies has increased substantially over the past decade. It is not well understood whether and how women adjust their contraceptive behavior when faced with restrictive abortion contexts. METHODS: Data from 14,523 women aged 15-44 were drawn from the 1995 and 2010 cycles of the National Survey of Family Growth. A difference-in-differences approach was employed to examine the relationship between state-level changes in women's access to abortion and their contraceptive choices. Multinomial logistic regression a

Physical Activity in Older Cancer Survivors: What Role Do Multimorbidity and Perceived Disability Play?

PURPOSE: (a) To describe the relationship of multimorbidity and physical activity (PA) in cancer survivors and (b) to explore perceived disability and PA in middle-aged and older survivors. METHODS: The authors analyzed the data from cancer survivors (N = 566), identified using the Pennsylvania Cancer Registry, who responded to a Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System-derived questionnaire. They created age groups (e.g., 45-54 years, 55-64 years, 65-74 years, and 75 years and older) and calculated a composite score of eight common comorbidities (e.g., chronic obstructive pulmonary disease…

Sexual identity, sex of sexual contacts, and health-risk behaviors among students in grades 9-12--youth risk behavior surveillance, selected sites, United States, 2001-2009.

PROBLEM: Sexual minority youths are youths who identify themselves as gay or lesbian, bisexual, or unsure of their sexual identity or youths who have only had sexual contact with persons of the same sex or with both sexes. Population-based data on the health-risk behaviors practiced by sexual minority youths are needed at the state and local levels to most effectively monitor and ensure the effectiveness of public health interventions designed to address the needs of this population. REPORTING PERIOD COVERED: January 2001-June 2009. DESCRIPTION OF SYSTEM: The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance

Maternal mortality.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review summarizes recent developments in maternal mortality surveillance, and draws from recent confidential mortality reports to suggest ways the anesthesiologist can contribute to safer systems of care. RECENT FINDINGS: Maternal mortality rates appear to be static in much of the developed world, but are increasing in the USA. While improvements in ascertainment explain some of these trends, deferred childbearing, increasing population rates of coexisting disease, multifetal pregnancy, and emerging infections also contribute. Risk is markedly elevated among certain ra

Risk of second malignancy after cancers of the renal parenchyma, renal pelvis, and ureter.

Risk of second primary malignancy was assessed in a population-based survey of persons who developed cancers of the renal parenchyma, renal pelvis, or ureter in Connecticut during the period 1935-1982. Among 4176 patients with a first primary tumor of the renal parenchyma, a second cancer was reported in 219 (5%), yielding a small but significantly elevated relative risk (RR) of 1.2, which reflects excesses for cancers of the bladder, kidney, and lymphatic-hematopoietic system. Among 939 patients with a first primary tumor of the renal pelvis or ureter, a second cancer was reported in 155 (17%

State-level analysis of mental health disparities between White, Black, and Hispanic populations before and after COVID-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic had disparate impacts on Black and Hispanic Americans, as observed in mortality and infection rates. The mental health impact of the pandemic is less clear, with little research exploring mental health disparities and differences by state and region. Using the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), state-level differences in unhealthy mental health days were examined between 2019 and 2021 for White, Black, and Hispanic respondents. Nonparametric tests assessed group differences in unhealthy mental health days, while state-level within- and between-group diffe…

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and mental health by gender identity in the United States, 2019-2021.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and their association with mental health outcomes in adulthood by gender identity. METHODS: Data come from 2019 to 2021 US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, among 17 states collecting gender identity and ACEs. We estimated the prevalence of ACEs and used Poisson family regression to estimate the association between ACEs and mental health stratified by gender identity. Mental health was assessed as current frequent mental distress and lifetime depression diagnosis.…

Exacerbating disparities?: Cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination.

The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is a powerful tool in cancer prevention. In combination with cervical cancer screening programs, this vaccine has the potential to nearly eliminate death from cervical cancer. However, this remarkable public health success can only be realized if vaccines reach those most at risk-unscreened women. Vaccinating only those already well-screened would have little impact on cervical cancer mortality, exacerbate disparities, and be a striking public health failure. We use data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System optional Adult HPV Vaccination mo…

Housing instability and mental distress among US veterans.

Evidence has suggested increased risk for homelessness and suicide among US veterans, but little is known about the associations between housing instability and psychological distress (including suicidal ideation). We examined frequent mental distress (FMD) and suicidal ideation among a probability-based sample of 1767 Nebraska veterans who participated in the 2010 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey who had and had not experienced housing instability in the past 12 months. Veterans experiencing housing instability had increased odds of FMD and suicidal ideation.
