Effects of an internet-delivered behavioral self-monitoring intervention on depressive symptoms in older widowed adults: A randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Late-life bereavement triggers substantial change to surviving spouses' routine health behaviors. Behavioral self-monitoring interventions are promising tools for promoting change across multiple behavioral domains, yet little is known about their efficacy in the spousal bereavement period. This trial evaluated the efficacy of an internet-delivered behavioral self-monitoring intervention for reducing depressive symptoms in older widowed adults. METHOD: We conducted an assessor-blind randomized controlled trial at a single site in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from January 2020 to Augus

Psychological and behavioral correlates of food addiction symptoms in university students: the role of hedonic eating and food label attitudes.

Food addiction (FA) involves addictive-like eating and impaired control over palatable food consumption. This cross-sectional study examined FA correlates among 404 university students, focusing on palatable eating motives and food label reading attitudes. Sixty-six participants (16.3%) met the original Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS 1.0) threshold of at least three of seven DSM-IV-TR criteria plus clinically significant impairment or distress. Female sex, smoking, obesity, and a higher T-PEMS mean were associated with higher odds of meeting the threshold; the obesity estimate was imprecise b

[Effectiveness of Dog-Assisted Therapy in Improving the Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis].

BACKGROUND: Patients with dementia commonly exhibit behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) such as depression, withdrawal, and agitation. These symptoms are known to significantly impact both mental and physical health, increase caregiving burdens, and lead to higher rates of hospitalization and mortality. PURPOSE: This study was designed to evaluate using a systematic review and meta-analysis the effectiveness of dog-assisted therapy (DAT) in improving BPSD. METHODS: In line with the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines for systematic reviews of effectiveness, a literature s

Severity of depression and anxiety symptoms is reflected in physiological and behavioral metrics collected from a consumer-grade wearable ring.

BACKGROUND: Modern wearable devices generate a multitude of digital metrics, which can be used to measure human function in health and disease. This study investigated whether and how digital metrics generated from a consumer-grade smart ring were different in individuals with varying severity of depression and anxiety symptoms in a large population-based cohort. METHODS: Cross-sectional data were obtained from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986 when participants were 33-35 years of age. Participants were asked to wear the Oura Ring for two weeks, which provided digital measures of sleep

An integrative treatment approach for behavioral health symptoms in active-duty special operations forces with repetitive mild traumatic brain injury.

Active-duty special operations forces (SOF) incur a significant burden of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and posttraumatic stress-related sequelae. Integrative treatments may address multiple areas of functioning in this population. We examined the impact of an integrative treatment approach on behavioral health symptoms among active-duty SOF service members with repetitive mTBI history. 195 participants underwent a 3-week intensive integrative rehabilitation program at Veterans Affairs Palo Alto between 2021-2024. Rehabilitation psychology treatment consisted of six 1-hour individual sess

Structural covariance network patterns linked to neuropsychiatric symptoms in biologically defined Alzheimer's disease: Insights from the mild behavioral impairment checklist.

BACKGROUND: The frequent presentation of Alzheimer's disease (AD) with neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) in the context of normal or minimally-impaired cognitive function led to the concept of Mild Behavioral Impairment (MBI). While MBI's impact on subsequent cognitive decline is recognized, its association with brain network changes in biologically-defined AD remains unexplored. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the correlation of structural covariance networks with MBI-C checklist sub-scores in biologically-defined AD patients. METHODS: We analyzed 33 biologically-defined AD patients, ranging from m

Effects of clinical stage, behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia, and living arrangement on social distance towards people with dementia.

BACKGROUND: Dementia presents significant challenges, including social exclusion, which can be exacerbated by public stigma. This study aimed to clarify how social distances, a common measure of public stigma, towards people living with dementia and its associated factors vary with clinical stage, presence of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), and living arrangements. METHODS: The study involved 2,589 Japanese participants aged 40 to 90 years. They were exposed to one of four vignettes depicting an 80-year-old woman progressing from normal ageing to mild, moderate, and

Diminished hedonic capacity in social activities as a mediator of the link between dysfunctional behavioral activation system and depressive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a crucial period for the development of depression, and previous studies have suggested that the Behavioral Activation System (BAS) plays a significant role. However, little is known about the underlying mechanisms. This study aimed to explore the mediating role of anhedonia in the relationship between BAS and depressive symptoms among Chinese adolescents. METHOD: A total of 1,023 high-school students aged 15-18 years participated in the study, with 916 continuing their participation three months later. All participants completed the Behavioral Inhibition System/Act

Psychotropic use for behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia during the COVID-19 pandemic: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the provision of quality care for behavioral and psychological symptoms in older adults with dementia may have been impeded due to physical distancing and infection control measures. Of particular concern is whether psychotropic medication use has increased despite its limited efficacy and adverse effects. This systematic review described the trajectory of psychotropic use for older adults with dementia across various settings, from community living to healthcare settings during the pandemic. Also, psychotropic use was explored in relation to patients,

Identification of Neuropsychiatric Symptoms in Preclinical and Prodromal Stages in Dementias: Development of a Screening Test for Mild Behavioral Impairment.

UNLABELLED: The study investigates the roles of bacterial virulence factors in the development of mycotic aneurysms and explores the potential of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as a therapeutic intervention. Mycotic aneurysms are different from degenerative ones in that they result from bacterial infections, and eradication or control of their virulence factors is influenced by bacteria. An early diagnosis with prompt treatment is needed in order to save lives since this type of aneurysm carries a high mortality rate associated with it. Imaging techniques include computed tomography (CT), positr

Cannabinoids for behavioral symptoms in severe dementia: Safety and feasibility in a long-term pilot observational study in nineteen patients.

CONTEXT: The management of behavioral symptoms and rigidity in patients with dementia constitutes a significant challenge. Short-term studies suggest an interest in the use of medical cannabis, but long-term data are lacking. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to investigate the feasibility and long-term safety of administering tetrahydrocannabinol/cannabidiol (THC/CBD) treatment as an additional drug to a poly medicated population with severe dementia, evaluate clinical improvements, and collect information on the pharmacokinetics of cannabinoids and possible drug-drug interactions.…

Dimensionality of Early Adversity and Associated Behavioral and Emotional Symptoms: Data from a Sample of Japanese Institutionalized Children and Adolescents.

Recent approaches have begun to identify common variance across co-occurring childhood adversities (CAs) and their associations with symptoms of psychopathology. However, few studies have investigated these questions in high-risk samples, and in different cultural contexts. This study examined common variance amongst 18 types of CAs and associated symptomatology in 457 children and adolescents living in 24 residential homes in Japan. Principal component analysis identified four significant components that explained 35.1% of the variance: parental abuse, parental psychosocial risks, parental ab

Social, Environmental and Behavioral Determinants of Asthma Symptoms in Brazilian Middle School Students-A National School Health Survey (Pense 2012).

Biological and psychosocial factors are recognized contributors to the worldwide burden of asthma. However, the relationship between psychosocial factors and asthma symptoms among students in low- and middle-income countries remains underexplored. We aimed to identify socioeconomic, environmental, psychosocial, family-related and lifestyle factors associated with the self-reporting of asthma symptoms in Brazilian adolescents. This is a cross-sectional study using data from the 2012 PeNSE survey (n = 109,104). We analyzed the following variables: socioeconomic conditions, demographic characteri
