Potential bioavailability of mercury in humus-coated clay minerals.

It is well-known that both clay and organic matter in soils play a key role in mercury biogeochemistry, while their combined effect is less studied. In this study, kaolinite, vermiculite, and montmorillonite were coated or not with humus, and spiked with inorganic mercury (IHg) or methylmercury (MeHg). The potential bioavailability of mercury to plants or deposit-feeders was assessed by CaCl2 or bovine serum albumin (BSA) extraction. For uncoated clay, IHg or MeHg extraction was generally lower in montmorillonite, due to its greater number of functional groups. Humus coating increased partitio

The effect of switchable water additives on clay settling.

The recycling of process water from strip mining extractions is a very relevant task both industrially and environmentally. The sedimentation of fine tailings during such processes, however, can often require long periods of time and/or the addition of flocculants which make later water recycling difficult. We propose the use of switchable water additives as reversible flocculants for clay/water suspensions. Switchable water additives are compounds such as diamines that make it possible to reversibly control the ionic strength of an aqueous solution. Addition of CO(2) to such an aqueous soluti

Degradation of mineral-immobilized pyrene by ferrate oxidation: Role of mineral type and intermediate oxidative iron species.

Ferrate (Fe(VI)) salts like K2FeO4 are efficient green oxidants to remediate organic contaminants in water treatment. Minerals are efficient sorbents of contaminants and also excellent solid heterogeneous catalysts which might affect Fe(VI) remediation processes. By targeting the typical polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon compound - pyrene, the application of Fe(VI) for oxidation of pyrene immobilized on three minerals, i.e., montmorillonite, kaolinite and goethite was studied for the first time. Pyrene immobilized on the three minerals was efficiently oxidized by Fe(VI), with 87%-99% of pyrene (

Synthesis of carboxymethyl cellulose-chitosan-montmorillonite nanosheets composite hydrogel for dye effluent remediation.

MMTNS were introduced into carboxymethyl cellulose-chitosan system to synthesize porous hydrogel adsorbent with stable structure and high dye handling capacity. Al-OH on edge of MMTNS formed hydrogen-bond (-OH···+NH3-) with -NH2 on CS, CS then cooperated with CMC via amidation and chains interleaving, forming three-dimensional hydrogel. Morphology characterization revealed that hydrogel possessed microporous open-framework structure, facilitating free entrance of macromolecular MB dye to react with internal reaction sites in hydrogel. Factor tests indicated that high removal (97%) of MB was ac

Montmorillonite clay and humic acid modulate the behavior of copper oxide nanoparticles in aqueous environment and induces developmental defects in zebrafish embryo.

Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) is one of the most commonly used metal oxide nanoparticles for commercial and industrial products. An increase in the manufacturing and use of the CuO NPs based products has increased the likelihood of their release into the aquatic environment. This has attracted major attention among researchers to explore their impact in human as well as environmental systems. CuO NPs, once released into the environment interact with the biotic and abiotic constituents of the ecosystem. Hence the objective of the study was to provide a holistic understanding of the effec

Aggregation and stability of anisotropic charged clay colloids in aqueous medium in the presence of salt.

Na-montmorillonite nanoclay is a colloid of layered mineral silicate. When dispersed in water, this mineral swells on absorption of water and exfoliates into platelets with electric double layers on their surfaces. Even at low particle concentration, the aqueous dispersion can exhibit a spontaneous ergodicity breaking phase transition from a free flowing liquid to nonequilibrium, kinetically arrested and disordered states such as gels and glasses. In an earlier publication [Applied Clay Science, 2015, 114, 8592], we showed that the stability of clay gels can be enhanced by adding a salt later
