Botanicals and anti-inflammatories: natural ingredients for rosacea.

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterized by cutaneous hypersensitivity. There are many therapeutic options available f … cid, and sodium sulfacetamide-sulfur. Many other topical therapies, such as calcineurin inhibitors, benzoyl peroxide, clindamycin, retinoids, topical corticosteroids, and permethrin have demonstrated varying degrees of success. Due to the inconsistent results of the aforementioned therapies patients are increasingly turning to alternative products containing natur …

A case of granulomatous rosacea successfully treated with pimecrolimus cream.

A 43-year-old male attended with lesions on his face that had been present for 3 months. On dermatological examination, multiple papules and pustules were seen on the forehead, nose, bilateral cheeks and lower eyelids. The patient used systemic clindamycin and doxycycline and topical benzoyl peroxide therapies, but the lesions did not regress. Routine laboratory tests were normal. Histopathological examination of the lesions confirmed the diagnosis of granulomatous rosacea. Pimecrolimus cream 1% was applied to the lesions. The regression of lesions began in the first month and complete improve…

Advances in the treatment of acne.

Acne vulgaris affects most people at some time in their life. This common condition can have devastating effects on a person's quality of life and may leave permanent scars. Treatment options, which are designed to disrupt one or more of the pathogenic features that characterize acne, include topical therapies (e.g., antibiotics, retinoids, benzoyl peroxide and combination products), systemic treatments (e.g., oral antibiotics, hormonal therapies and oral retinoids, which are indicated for severe recalcitrant nodulocystic acne), and, to a lesser extent, light-based and physical treatments. Com…

Topical tazarotene: The BEST (balancing efficacy, speed, and tolerability) in acne trial.

Results of clinical trials have shown that tazarotene cream used as monotherapy effectively reduces the number of both inflammatory and noni … ined with continued use of the medication. The combination of tazarotene 0.1% cream and clindamycin-benzoyl peroxide was the best tolerated of all the treatment regimens. Patients and investigators reported high levels of treatment satisfaction with topical tazarotene 0.1% cream.

[Contact allergies of the oral mucosa].

Patch tests were performed on 132 patients suspected of allergic sensitivity to dentures. Of these, 98 reacted positively to at least one substance. While only 4 patients showed positive reactions to methyl methacrylate, 42 (31,8%) had positive tests with the catalyst benzoyl peroxide, 4 and 5 patients, respectively, were positive to 4 different inhibitors, 7 patients reacted positively to various softeners and 3 to the reducing agent hydrazine sulfate. 43 positive reactions occurred on the commercial products, of these 39,5% on the liquid monomer, 23,2% on the polymer in powder form and 37,2%…

How Much Do We Know about Maintaining Treatment Response after Successful Acne Therapy? Systematic Review on the Efficacy and Safety of Acne Maintenance Therapy.

After cessation of successful initial acne therapy, patients often experience flares. Consecutive maintenance treatment after successful induction therapy is promoted by guidelines; however, little is known about the efficacy/safety of different maintenance regimens. A systematic review on acne maintenance treatments was conducted. We identified 5 randomized controlled trials [RCTs; adapalene vs. vehicle or vs. no treatment (3 RCTs), adapalene/benzoyl peroxide (BPO) vs. vehicle, combination/monotherapy of minocycline (systemic)/tazarotene/placebo] and 3 non-RCTs on systemic isotretinoin, adapa…

From new findings in acne pathogenesis to new approaches in treatment.

Acne is a chronic disease of the pilosebaceous unit which is most common during adolescence. Four factors are believed to play a key role in the development of acne lesions: excess sebum production, disturbed keratinization within the follicle, colonization of the pilosebaceous duct by Propionibacterium acnes, and the release of inflammatory mediators into the skin. Consequently, in order to effectively and rapidly reduce acne lesions, treatments need to address as many of these underlying factors as possible. Currently, about half of patients have poor adherence to acne treatments. To overcom

Safe and successful treatment of acne vulgaris with isotretinoin in a patient with chronic granulomatous disease.

Isotretinoin for acne vulgaris in the setting of chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is a controversial therapeutic option. In this inherited immunodeficiency, inefficient tissue responses to bacteria and fungi lead to chronic and recurrent infections. Isotretinoin is known to be associated with several mucocutaneous side effects that could worsen the immune response in individuals with CGD. We report the fourth published case of acne vulgaris treated with isotretinoin in an individual with CGD, with a safe and successful outcome.

Management of truncal acne vulgaris: current perspectives on treatment.

Acne vulgaris is one of the most common disorders encountered by dermatologists in the clinical setting. Although it is well recognized that the back and chest may be affected in many patients, little data exist regarding the prevalence, grading, and treatment of truncal acne vulgaris. Results of clinical studies suggest that as with facial acne vulgaris, combination therapy is optimal. This article discusses clinical challenges related to the management of truncal acne vulgaris, a system for rating disease severity, and recommendations regarding the use of topical and systemic therapies.

Enzymatically generated hydrogen peroxide reduces the number of acne lesions in acne vulgaris.

A major component to the etiology of acne is the growth and invasion by Propionibacterium acnes. Hydrogen peroxide is an excellent antimicrobial agent but is unstable in most formulations. We have developed a hydrogen peroxide generation system using the enzyme glucose oxidase and glucose. This system is stable in a simple formulation and nonirritating. In a short-term clinical study (4 days), this formulation was effective in reducing the individual lesion size and total number of inflammatory acne lesions. There was a 68% reduction in acne-induced inflammation and 61% reduction in acne size

ESR study of MMA polymerization by a peroxide/amine system: bone cement formation.

Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy was used to gain insight at the molecular level into the curing of bone cement. Methyl methacrylate was polymerized using a N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine (TD)/benzoyl peroxide (BPO) redox system in the presence of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) powder. The conventional nine-line ESR spectrum for the growing polymer radical was detected at the gel stage of polymerization. While the optimum free radical concentration was observed near the equimolar amine/BPO concentration, excess amine led to a change in the chemical structure of the trapped radical and inhi…

Effects of mesotherapy introduction of compound glycyrrhizin injection on the treatment of moderate to severe acne.

BACKGROUND: Compound glycyrrhizin has achieved outstanding results in the treatment of various skin diseases. However, the use of mesotherapy to inject compound glycyrrhizin into the skin to treat acne is still understudied. AIMS: This paper aims to explore the effects of mesotherapy introduction of compound glycyrrhizin injection on the acne. MATERIALS & METHODS: A total of 108 patients were included in this study and divided into the control group (n = 54) and the observation group (n = 54). The control group was treated with topical clindamycin gel, while the study group was treated with

Tolerability of topical antimicrobials in treatment of acne vulgaris.

BACKGROUND: Thirty to 40% of patients using topical treatments do not comply with their treatment regimen. OBJECTIVE: To examine how tolerability is assessed, tolerability ratings, and clinical significance of tolerability ratings of topical antimicrobials for acne. METHODS: A literature search was performed using the terms "tolerability AND acne AND (benzoyl peroxide OR antimicrobial OR clindamycin OR erythromycin OR dapsone OR sulfur OR sulfacetamide)." Inclusion criteria were: 1) evaluation of tolerability, 2) use of an identified topical antimicrobial for acne treatment without combinati…
