Bereaved parents involvement in maternity hospital perinatal death review processes: 'Nobody even thought to ask us anything'.

INTRODUCTION: The death of a baby is devastating for parents, families and staff involved. Involving bereaved parents in their baby's care and in the maternity hospital perinatal death review can help parents manage their bereavement and plan for the future. In Ireland, bereaved parents generally have not been involved in this review process. The aim of our study was to assess parents' perception of how they may be appropriately involved in the maternity hospital perinatal death review in ways that benefit them and the review process itself. METHODS: Bereaved parents (n = 20) in Ireland were …

Grief processing and deliberate grief avoidance: a prospective comparison of bereaved spouses and parents in the United States and the People's Republic of China.

In this study, the authors measured grief processing and deliberate grief avoidance and examined their relationship to adjustment at 4 and 18 months of bereavement for 2 types of losses (spouse, child) in 2 cultures (People's Republic of China, United States). Three hypotheses were compared: the traditional grief work assumption, a conditional grief work hypothesis, and a view of grief processing as a form of rumination absent among resilient individuals. Although cultural differences in grief processing and avoidance were observed, the factor structure of these measures proved invariant acros…

Volunteer helpers' perspectives on establishing contact with drug‑related death bereaved: The role of civil society organisations in reaching marginalised groups.

Drug‑related death bereavement is marked by stigma, social withdrawal, and limited access to early support, making initial contact challenging. Based on six focus groups analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis, three themes emerged: Increased Visibility in Society, Guidance to Services, and Tailored Services for Diverse Needs. Findings show that societal stigma and limited recognition make bereaved indivi…

Mass Trauma, Multiple Losses, and the Application of the Two-Track Model of Bereavement in the Context of War: Assessment From a Systemic-Ecological Perspective.

Multiple losses in wartime, both death-related and non-death-related, require multidimensional assessment to encompass both the event and the multiple levels of interpersonal and societal involvements within which individuals are embedded. We present a case study in which the traumatic death of a family member is a central, but not exclusive, element in understanding the bereavement process. The traumatic death originated with the events of October 7, 2023 and the ensuing war which were part of an overwhelming surge of traumatic losses in Israel. The bereaved's response met the criteria for Po…
