Effect of biofeedback treatment on sympathetic function in common migraine and tension-type headache.

Behavioral therapies such as biofeedback are commonly used to treat migraine and tension headache. Controlling sympathetic activity is effective for controlling the pain in both disturbances. A group of 26 common migraine patients and a group of 14 tension headache patients were treated by electromyographic biofeedback (EMG-BFB); blood samples were collected during the treatment (1st session; pre and post 10th session) and plasma catecholamines and cortisol measured to determine basal levels and changes induced by the behavioral therapy. The clinical efficacy of BFB treatment for tension heada

Italian experience of electromyographic-biofeedback treatment of episodic common migraine: preliminary results.

Electromyographic biofeedback is commonly used successfully to treat tension-type headache, while thermal biofeedback is considered the best behavioral therapy for migraine. Ten female patients with episodic common migraine (age 20-35 years, age of disease onset 16.2 +/- 5.1 years, illness duration 13.6 +/- 10.7 years) were treated by 16 twice-weekly electromyographic biofeedback and relaxation training sessions with breathing exercises. Follow-up sessions were held 1,3,6 and 12 months after the end of treatment. A significant decrease in migraine episodes was noted after therapy. More importa

An interdisciplinary approach to the treatment of a hyperfunctional voice disorder.

The purpose of this article is to describe the treatment of a 45-year-old male with a hyperfunctional voice disorder by a biofeedback therapist and a speech-language pathologist. The interdisciplinary approach to the treatment of this voice disorder involved the combined use of traditional voice therapy techniques and EMG biofeedback procedures together with cognitive behavioral therapy. Voice therapy was facilitated through the use of a computer-based, speech-monitoring system. The remediation of this voice disorder was attributed to the collaborative efforts of two professionals representing

EMG activity in pericranial muscles during postural variation and mental activity in healthy volunteers and patients with chronic tension type headache.

EMG activity was recorded over frontalis, temporalis and trapezius muscles in a supine position, a standing position and during a mental task in 32 female patients suffering from chronic tension-type headache and in 20 healthy volunteers. Measurements in patients were made before and after biofeedback therapy. All EMG levels were on average significantly higher in patients than in controls. 62.5% of patients had at least one abnormal EMG level, but only 34% were beyond the normal range, if 1 muscle and 1 recording condition was considered. EMG levels were not correlated with headache severity,

EMG biofeedback treatment of pediatric hyperfunctional dysphonia.

A 9-year-old boy with a long history of impaired communication resulting from hyperfunctional dysphonia and vocal nodules had proven to be unresponsive to traditional voice therapy. In this study, he engaged in biweekly visual EMG biofeedback training to reduce laryngeal muscle tension. In a multiple baseline design across two responses with changing criteria, results demonstrated sequential stepwise reductions in muscle tension with each new criterion. Concomitant improvements were found in laryngeal aerodynamic functioning and in voice quality. The treatment also resulted in the elimination

EMG biofeedback treatment of torticollis: a controlled outcome study.

Successful treatment of torticollis with electromyographic (EMG) biofeedback has been reported in a number of single case and single group studies. The present investigation represents the first controlled outcome study. Twelve torticollis patients were randomly assigned to EMG biofeedback or relaxation training and graded neck exercises (RGP). The procedure involved three sessions of baseline assessment, 15 sessions of EMG BF or RGP, 6 sessions of EMG BF or RGP plus home-management, 6 sessions of home-management alone, and follow-up 3 months after the end of treatment. A variety of outcome me

[Instrumental autogenic training of the mechanisms of regulation of the cardiovascular system functions in the treatment of patients with neuroses].

It is advisable that in the treatment of neurotic patients with marked vegetovascular manifestations, instrumental autotraining may be employed. It includes biomonitoring with pulse rate feedback according to the alternating sinusoidal law. The procedure of the autotraining is described in detail. 10 to 13 sessions of the autotraining given to such patients undergoing hospital treatment that also included routine therapy considerably improved the treatment results. The autotraining can thus be considered as a kind of the training of the mechanisms responsible for vegetative function regulation

Control of the end-tidal PCO2 in the hyperventilation syndrome: effects of biofeedback and breathing instructions compared.

Twenty chronic hyperventilation syndrome patients were assigned to biofeedback training to raise end-tidal PCO2 level or received a breathing exercise schedule for home practice. Both methods offered equal opportunity for improving end-tidal PCO2 significantly. Alleviation of complaints, however, was only noticeable in the biofeedback group. This may be due to the fact that improvement in the severity of the hyperventilation syndrome was not only significantly related to increase in end-tidal PCO2 but also to initial end-tidal PCO2 level and state of the ventilatory controlling system. Training of voluntary torsion.

By means of a visual feedback technique, human subjects were trained to make large conjugate cyclorotary eye movements at will. The range of movement increased with training at a rate of approximately 0.8 degrees per hour of practice, reaching 30 degrees at the end of training. Photographs recorded the ability to make voluntary cyclofixations at any amplitude within the subject's range. Cyclotorsional pursuit was also trained, with ability increasing with greater amounts of fisual feedback. In addition, torsional saccadic tracking was trained, showing a magnitude vs. peak velocity relationship

Behavioral methods in the treatment of hypertension. A review of their clinical status.

Behavioral methods to lower blood pressure include biofeedback, relaxation, psychotherapy, suggestion and placebo, and environmental modification. Reported data for each method have been examined applying the clinical pharmacologic format used to study other therapeutic agents. Most studies have been Phase I type, small numbers of subjects in acute (short-term) treatment situations. Phase II studies, controlled trials with comparison with known effective agents, are sparse, and Phase III studies are not yet appropriate. These Phase I studies indicate blood pressure effects that are small, with

The Relevance of Heart Rate Variability for Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy.

This review examines what constitutes heart rate variability (HRV), the relationship between HRV and the autonomic nervous system, and the physiology driving HRV. HRV is correlated with vagal nerve activity and parasympathetic nervous activation. Higher HRV is correlated with youth, active lifestyle, adaptive capacity, and good health. Next, the review examines the medical significance of HRV, especially the correlation between lower HRV and the presence of medical and psychological disorders. In general, HRV serves as a biomarker for health and disease, an index of autonomic nervous system dy

Tethered cord syndrome (TCS) and constipation in children: a multifaceted approach (literature review).

Tethered cord syndrome (TCS) is estimated to affect approximately 25 per 100 000 live births. Despite advancements in medical knowledge and technology, the persistence of this issue is attributed to challenges in early detection and limited awareness, often resulting in undiagnosed cases until adulthood. Constipation serves as a noteworthy symptom in children with TCS, yet it frequently goes unnoticed or is ascribed to other causes, leading to delayed diagnosis and negatively impacting a child's quality of life. The aim of this manuscript is to explore the relationship between TCS and constipa

Study protocol of guided mobile-based perinatal mindfulness intervention (GMBPMI) - a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Psychological distress is a common occurrence among women during the perinatal period. Maternal psychological distress (MPS) can also have a negative influence on neonatal outcomes such as infant health, child development or mother-child interaction. Hence, interventions to improve mental wellbeing during this period are vital. Mindfulness based intervention (MBI) has been found to be effective in reducing psychological distress. Delivery of MBI via the internet, making it accessible and inexpensive, is showing a promising positive effect in reducing psychological distress. A rando

A proposed anxiety-hypertonic pelvic floor axis in postpartum women: a narrative review of mechanistic links and rehabilitation implications.

Pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) and postpartum anxiety are commonly assessed and treated separately, although accumulating evidence suggests that psychological distress and pelvic floor muscle over activity may interact. This narrative review synthesizes epidemiological, neurobiological, and rehabilitation evidence and proposes the Anxiety-Hypertonic Pelvic Floor Axis as a framework for this bidirectional association. Postpartum anxiety and chronic stress may contribute to hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis dysregulation, sympathetic predominance, inflammatory signaling, and central sensitizat

Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback to Manage the Mental Health of Adults With Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Pilot Study.

Irritable bowel syndrome [IBS] is classified as a disorder of gut-brain interaction related to stress with no curative option. Heart rate variability biofeedback [HRV-BFB] is a non-drug therapy recently suggested to be relevant in reducing both autonomic nervous system [ANS] dysregulations and psychiatric comorbidities. Nevertheless, empirical evidence is still scarce and only a few studies have tested HRV-BFB in adults with IBS. Our aims were therefore to examine the effectiveness of HRV-BFB training on the psychophysiological states of 29 adults with IBS. The study took place in three sessio

[Psychology of phobias in relation to dental anxiety].

In this article the most important etiologic factors related to dental anxiety are presented and form the basis for the exposition of a model for the psychologic development of dental anxiety. The model shows that personality factors related to emotion and cognition can influence the development of dental anxiety. In order for the anxiety to develop and become manifest it is also necessary that: 1: the individual experiences a given stimulus as presenting a physical threat, e.g. in the form of pain, 2: the individual has been exposed to an experience or a learning situation involving the stimu
