BACKGROUND: There is considerable variation in progressive brain volume changes in schizophrenia. Whether this is related to the clinical heterogeneity that characterizes the illness remains to be determined. This study examines the relationship between change in brain volume over time and individual variation in psychopathology, as measured by five continuous symptom dimensions (i.e. negative, positive, disorganization, mania and depression).
METHODS: Global brain volume measurements from 105 schizophrenia patients and 100 healthy comparison subjects, obtained at inclusion and 5-year follow-

Forensic serology has long been a cornerstone in forensic investigations, utilizing multidisciplinary approaches to identify and individualize biological evidence at crime scenes. However, the field faces challenges such as the potential for blood group changes in individuals affected by diseases or medical treatments, leading to false outcomes in prolonged legal cases. Additionally, the passive adsorption of bacterial products by red blood cells can result in blood group switching, emphasizing the need for careful analysis, especially in cases of concurrent infections. Furthermore, post-morte

Recently, there has been considerable interest in the study of radiation-induced dicentrics and other chromosome aberrations in phytohaemagglutinin (PHA)-stimulated blood lymphocytes of various mammals, including man, with the aim of establishing a proper biological dosimetry for the assessment of genetic radiation hazards in human. These studies have revealed that the radiosensitivity of lymphocytes differs between species and even between individuals of the same species, but the cause(s) of these variations still remains unclear. The life-shortening response to whole-body X-ray irradiation i

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a malignancy that arises from the mucosal epithelium of the nasopharynx, and its prognosis is relatively favorable. The 5-year overall survival rate in patients with locally advanced NPC currently exceeds 80%, but the development of individualized diagnosis and treatment at the molecular level is relatively lacking. Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) is the generic term for tumor cells that are present in the peripheral blood circulation. As a new biomarker with good clinical application prospects, the detection of CTCs has the advantages of being non-invasive, si

The purpose of this review article is to demonstrate the close parallelism of daily requirements, biological activity and minimum and maximum tolerable levels of selenium for animals and man. In addition, the carcinogenic/anticarcinogenic properties of selenium are discussed and a postulate of how these dichotomous effects may occur in accordance with selenium-induced immunomodulation is presented. A review of pertinent literature pertaining to the biological action of selenium in animals and man, including deficiency, toxicity, carcinogenicity and effects on immunity, is included to support t

Arrhythmias are a frequent and potentially fatal side effect of antipsychotic treatment. Strict ECG monitoring and clinical interviews are the standards used to prevent arrhythmias. A biologic predictive tool is missing. The identification of a genetic makeup at risk of antipsychotic-induced arrhythmias is the aim of the present investigation. The aim of this study was to identify a molecular pathway enriched in single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with antipsychotic-induced QTc modifications. In total, 661 schizophrenic individuals from the CATIE study, M=486 (73.52%), mean age=40.92±11

Significant variation in the course of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease ( ADPKD) within families suggests the presence of effect modifiers. Recent studies of the variation within families harboring PKD1 mutations indicate that genetic background may account for 32 to 42% of the variance in estimated GFR (eGFR) before ESRD and 43 to 78% of the variance in age at ESRD onset, but the genetic modifiers are unknown. Here, we conducted a high-throughput single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping association study of 173 biological candidate genes in 794 white patients from 227 famil

The transcriptome of Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells plays a crucial role in determining cellular characteristics that are essential for biopharmaceutical applications. RNA-sequencing has been extensively used to profile gene expression patterns, aiming to gain a better understanding of intracellular behavior and mechanisms. Individual datasets, however, do not provide a comprehensive overview and characterization of the CHO cell's transcriptome, such that the fundamental structure of the transcriptome remains unknown. Using 15 RNA-sequencing datasets, encompassing almost 300 samples of vari

The Choroid Plexus (ChP) is a vascular brain structure involved in vital brain functions. Most clinical studies have focused on analyzing ChP Volume (ChPV) in diseased populations, revealing a pattern of increased ChPV that might be related to neuroinflammatory processes. For full clinical translation, it is crucial to understand the normal variability of ChPV in relation to biological factors (such as age and gender) and brain anthropometric measures. Nonetheless, this has only been partially explored, and primarily in small size cohorts of healthy subjects. This study aims to develop and val

Finasteride is currently used extensively for male androgenic alopecia and benign prostatic hyperplasia; however, some adverse effects are severe and even persistent after treatment cessation, the so-called 'post-finasteride syndrome'. The following most severe adverse effects-sexual dysfunction and depression-often occur together and may potentiate one other, a fact that could explain (at least in part) the magnitude and persistence of finasteride adverse effects. This paper presents the pharmacological action of finasteride and the corresponding adverse effects, the biological base explainin

Global proteomic analyses of complex protein samples in nanogram quantities require a fastidious approach to achieve in-depth protein coverage and quantitative reproducibility. Biological samples are often severely mass limited and can preclude the application of more robust bulk sample processing workflows. In this study, we present a system that minimizes sample handling by using online immobilized trypsin digestion and solid phase extraction to create a simple, sensitive, robust, and reproducible platform for the analysis of nanogram-size proteomic samples. To demonstrate the effectiveness

Previous biological studies showed evidence of a genetic link between obesity and pigmentation in both animal models and humans. Our study investigated the individual and joint associations between obesity-related single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and both human pigmentation and risk of melanoma. Eight obesity-related SNPs in the FTO, MAP2K5, NEGR1, FLJ35779, ETV5, CADM2, and NUDT3 genes were nominally significantly associated with hair color among 5,876 individuals of European ancestry. The genetic score combining 35 independent obesity-risk loci was significantly associated with darker

Routine determination of the blood serum concentration of most of the usual anticonvulsants is possible by means of an immunoenzymatic method (EMIT). Determination of the total concentration permits conclusions as to the amount of available, unbound and, thus, effective amount of the substance. Regular determination of serum values provides insight into the relevant pharmacokinetics. Metabolism of anticonvulsants differs greatly among individuals and therefore considerable individual variation exists in the relation between the applied dose and the attained serum level. The metabolic rate of t

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), a genetic condition that disrupts cortisol synthesis, is associated with elevated androgen levels in females with CAH. Altered hormonal milieus have been linked to changes in brain structure, yet little is known about how CAH affects the cerebral cortex. Here, we investigated vertex-wise cortical thickness in 53 individuals with CAH (33 women and 20 men) and 53 sex- and age-matched controls (33 women and 20 men) using surface-based morphometry. There were no significant effects of biological sex and no significant diagnosis-by-sex interaction. However, the

BCG vaccination protects not only against tuberculosis but also against heterologous infections. This effect differs between individuals, yet the factors responsible for this variation are unknown. BCG-induced nonspecific protection is, at least partially, mediated by innate immune reprogramming (trained immunity), which can be induced by the muramyl dipeptide (MDP) component of peptidoglycans. We aimed to study whether differential release of MDP in healthy individuals may explain variability of their response to BCG vaccination. Circulating MDP concentrations were increased up to three month

INTRODUCTION: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects around 1% of the population, and its diagnosis is primarily clinical. Therefore, the study of biological markers is essential. The retina and optic nerve have been studied in many ocular and non-ocular diseases using non-invasive techniques such as Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and OCT Angiography (OCT-A).
METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed using the Covidence® platform across promimnent databases including PubMed, PsycINFO and Embase up to February 2023.
RESULTS: The analysis of the included studies revealed differ

Understanding the dynamic and heterogeneous behavior of gas-generating catalysts at the single-nanoparticle level is important to address many chemical and biological challenges. Most current studies rely on ensemble analysis, which fails to capture the unique and critical catalytic kinetics inherent in single nanocatalysts. Herein, we developed an integrated dark-field microscopy (DFM) platform with multimodal analysis capabilities to investigate gas-generating catalysis at the single-nanoparticle level, using the decomposition of H2O2 by MnO2 nanoparticles as a model reaction. By tracking sc

DNA methylation is a fundamental epigenetic modification that regulates gene expression, maintains genomic integrity and defines cellular identity. Conventional bulk sequencing methods, such as reduced-representation bisulfite sequencing (RRBS), have elucidated genome-wide methylation landscapes but do not reveal cell-to-cell variation, limiting insights into methylation heterogeneity during development, differentiation and disease. Here, we present multiplexed single-cell RRBS (Msc-RRBS), a streamlined and scalable protocol for parallel DNA methylation profiling of hundreds of individual cell

Acute-phase proteins (APPs) are used in veterinary science for diagnosing disease, identifying acute and subclinical inflammatory processes, monitoring disease progression, assessing patient response to treatment, and as a general health screening tool. In turtles, the utility of APPs, such as albumin, haptoglobin, fibrinogen, and myeloid-related protein (MRP)-126, as inflammatory markers has been investigated in a small number of studies. Serum or plasma protein electrophoresis, immunoassays, and biochemistry assays are most commonly employed to study such APPs, with mass spectrometry-based p
