Interregional WHO meeting on prevention of corneal blindness was held in Tunis in November 14-17. The participants came to a conclusion that corneal blindness ranks second after cataract in the majority of countries of the world. It is more incident in developing countries and is the leading cause of blindness in children. The principal etiologic factors of corneal blindness are analyzed: trachoma, mycotic, parasitic, traumatic, conjunctivitis of the newborns. Recommendations on prevention of corneal blindness were developed, as were suggestions on approaches to primary and secondary preventio…

Blindness is one of the major complications that can occur during and after intranasal ethmoidectomy. Two mechanisms for blindness are apparent: (1) direct injury to the optic nerve and (2) retrobulbar (orbital) hematoma, which increases orbital pressure and compromises vascular supply and drainage to and from the eye. While several publications have discussed the management of blindness from a delayed operative vantage point, no publication has discussed the immediate management of blindness from intraoperative or immediate postoperative occurrence, stressing specific medical and surgical tre…

An analysis has been made of data obtained from all available blind and partially sighted registration forms (Form BD8) for the City of Nottingham between the years 1980 and 1985 inclusive. Senile macular degeneration was the commonest cause for registration followed by glaucoma and then diabetic retinopathy. The rate of registration per 100,000 of population for different age groups is compared with similar figures for all England obtained 10 years previously. There is an apparent increase in the rate of registration of senile macular degeneration but a reduction in the rate of registration o

In the course of the 20th century there have been major changes in the causes of blindness in childhood. This is illustrated by the example of the 1271 children born between 1885 and 1976 who attended the Bavarian State School for the Blind. The following developments became apparent: Until 1940 the most common cause of blindness, accounting for 25% of the cases, was corneal disease, almost exclusively of infectious origin. This cause has been reduced most, to 2%. There has also been a clear reduction in blindness due to anterior uveitis (mainly due to infection) and chorioretinitis. There wer…

The unusual case of a woman with pre-eclampsia and "HELLP" syndrome associated with postictal transient cortical blindness is described. Immediate delivery should be performed in order to achieve good maternal and neonatal outcome.

One hundred and thirty Tanzanian children with corneal ulceration were clinically examined to determine the cause of the ulceration. 37% of the ulcers were associated with recent measles infection and 38% of the children had bilateral ulceration. Herpes simplex virus infection was the commonest cause of ulceration in the series, but vitamin A deficiency was the major cause of bilateral ulceration, subsequent blindness, and mortality in this series. Other significant causes of childhood corneal ulceration were the use of traditional eye medicines, confluent measles keratitis, and ophthalmia neo…

We studied 187 patients attending special educational institutions in Saudi Arabia who were blind before the age of 14. All patients underwent complete ophthalmological evaluation. The visual acuity in 31% of the patients was no light perception and in 58% light perception to counting fingers at 3 feet (1 m). 70% were blind before age 2. Prior to 1962 acquired diseases led to blindness in 75% of the patients. From 1962 onwards genetically determined diseases accounted for 84% of childhood blindness. 56% of this group were the product of consanguineous marriages. On the other hand in the group …

This paper discusses the present state of health services in Zambia both in terms of training of personnel and health care delivery. The training in ophthalmology of medical students is poor and of medical auxiliaries almost non-existent. Based on a few limited studies and hospitals returns, the prevalence of eye diseases and blindness data are presented. These may have a wide margin of error; cataract, trachoma, corneal involvement and glaucoma are the leading causes. Degenerative lesions, trauma, squint, tumors, uveitis and refractive errors are additional causes. A programme to prevent blin…

Patients with amaurosis fugax (transient monocular blindness) have been studied including an ophthalmodynamometry. In most of the cases there were general circulatory disturbances with marked orthostatic decrease of the ophthalmic pressure, and comparatively seldom carotid stenosis and hypertension.

A 33-year-old man had a sudden onset of night blindness 3 1/2 years after intestinal bypass surgery for morbid obesity. Ocular examination disclosed a probable Bitot's spot and electrophysiologic testing showed markedly impaired dark adaptation and subnormal electroretinography. After therapy with orally administered vitamin A, the night blindness disappeared and the dark adaptation curve and electroretinogram returned to normal.

A descriptive epidemiological survey of monocular and binocular blindness in Australian Aborigines was undertaken. A case-control study was also performed using age and sex matched sighted controls to allow investigation of personal and environmental factors which may contribute to blindness. The prevalence rate of binocular blindness in the Australian Aboriginal males and females was 11/1000; and the monocular blindness rates were 24/1000 for males and 18/1000 for females. The prevalence of blindness was strongly age-related; over the age of 60 years, 21.5% of males and 17.5% of females were …

A case of reduction of a displaced zygomatic fracture with postoperative proptosis, a dilated, nonreactive pupil, and blindness is presented. Early diagnosis with extended lateral canthotomy and removal of the lateral bony wall of the orbit for a depth of 18 mm produced immediate decompression with relief of the proptosis and possible blindness from pressure on the optic nerve. Vision was maintained, and a satisfactory cosmetic result was achieved.

Three unrelated boys, ages 2, 6, and 10 years, who have congenital stationary night blindness with myopia and a Schubert-Bornschein-type electroretinogram finding, were found to show a "paradoxical" pupillary constriction in darkness. When examining room lights are turned out, the patient's pupils briskly constrict and slowly dilate. Older night blind male relatives of these boys did not show this abnormal constriction to darkness.
