BACKGROUND: Washing red blood cell (RBC) units mitigates severe allergic transfusion reactions. However, washing reduces the time to expiration and the effective dose. Automated washing is time- and labor-intensive. A shortage of cell processor tubing sets prompted review of medical necessity for washed RBC for patients previously thought to require washing.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A single-center, retrospective study investigated discontinuing wash RBC protocols in chronically transfused adults. In select patients with prior requirements for washing, due to a history of allergic transfusio

OBJECTIVES: To assess the safety and efficacy of a Food and Drug Administration-approved pathogen-reduced platelet (PLT) product in children, as ongoing questions regarding their use in this population remain.
STUDY DESIGN: We report findings from a quality assurance review of PLT utilization, associated red blood cell transfusion trends, and short-term safety of conventional vs pathogen-reduced PLTs over a 21-month period while transitioning from conventional to pathogen-reduced PLTs at a large, tertiary care hospital. We assessed utilization in neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) patients,

BACKGROUND: The practice of transfusing ones' own shed whole blood has obvious benefits such as reducing the need for allogeneic transfusion … s is a multi-institutional retrospective study of all trauma patients who received autologous whole blood transfusion from hemothorax from two Level I trauma centers. Patients who received AT were matched to patients who did not receive AT (No-AT) using propensity score matching in a 1:1 ratio for admission age, sex, mechanism, type of injury, Injury Severity Score …

BACKGROUND: Children suffering from beta-thalassemia major require repeated blood transfusions which may be associated with dangers like iron overload and contraction of infections such as HIV, HCV, and HBsAg which ultimately curtail their life span. On the other hand, inadequate transfusions lead to severe anemia and general fatigue and debility.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were obtained from 142 beta-thalassemia major patients aged 3 years or more receiving regular blood transfusions at a transfusion centre in Western India from 1 April 2009 to 30 June 2009. The clinical data and laboratory…

BACKGROUND: Regional Blood Transfusion Centre (RBTC), GTB Hospital, Delhi is providing safe and quality blood to one third of Delhi population. A discrepancy exists when reactions in forward grouping do not match with reverse grouping or if the previous and current results do not match.
AIM: To analyze ABO blood group discrepancies in an algorithmic manner, and to access the incidence and causes of ABO discrepancies among blood donors.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective data of blood donors with blood group discrepancies was recorded in Regional Blood Transfusion Centre (East) Delhi, during…

OBJECTIVE: Placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) is a group of placental invasion pathologies associated with significant morbidity to both mother and fetus. The majority of patients with PAS will require a blood transfusion at time of delivery and subsequent cesarean hysterectomy. The optimal approach to maternal acute blood loss resuscitation is currently unknown.
METHODS: Here, we present a cohort analysis of 34 patients with pathology-confirmed PAS treated with either whole blood (n = 16) or component therapy (n = 18) for initial intraoperative resuscitation.
RESULTS: We observed comparable re…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This paper reports the results to 31 May 2015 of an ongoing UK study to look for additional cases of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) transmission by blood transfusion, and to seek evidence whether other subtypes of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) may be transmissible via blood components.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All vCJD cases of appropriate age and any sporadic CJD (sCJD) or familial CJD (fCJD) cases with a history of blood donation or transfusion are notified to the UKBS. Donation records are sought and the usage of all donations is determined by look back…

To determine how well anaesthetists in Nigeria determine the need for transfusion based solely on physiological variables and estimated blood loss. To determine the incidence of inappropriate blood transfusion. Anaesthetists in our hospital determine when to transfuse patients based solely on clinical acumen. This may result in inappropriate transfusion especially in this subregion where blood donors are scarce and risk of transmission of infection high. All surgical patients requiring blood transfusion were prospectively studied over 3 months. Transfusion was based solely on the discretion of…

In the last decade, a new variant of the human prion disease Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (now known as variant CJD or vCJD) was identified and causally linked to dietary exposure to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) during the 1980s and early 1990s. Preliminary studies in animal models suggest that prions can be transmitted by blood. Based on two recent reports of iatrogenic vCJD transmission by blood transfusion in humans, a Department of Health-sponsored risk assessment warned that recipients of plasma therapies are now at risk of contracting vCJD from potentially infected donors. It is b…

Pre-transplantation red blood cell transfusion (RBCT) is a well-recognized cause of allosensitization. However, the effects of RBCT after kidney transplantation remain controversial. This study evaluates the impacts of RBCT within the first 30 days post-transplantation (early RBCT) with regard to long-term patient and graft outcomes. We retrospectively analyzed 785 patients who underwent HLA- and ABO-compatible kidney transplantation between 2014 and 2020. Patients were categorized based on whether they received early RBCT. Overall, 18.9% of patients received early RBCT. On multivariable analy
