Differences in body composition and physical activity in youth with obesity who report pain.

BACKGROUND: Pain is a common comorbidity in youth with obesity and may reduce participation in physical activity (PA), a cornerstone of obesity treatment. However, the relationship between pain severity, body composition, and physical activity participation remains poorly understood. METHODS: Anthropometrics and body composition were assessed in youth (8-20 years) with obesity at a healthy lifestyle clinic. PA was reported as the number of days/week the youth engaged in ≥60 min of activity (0-1, 2-4, 5-7 days). Youth were grouped by caregiver-reported pain level (no pain, mild, or moderate-to

Reaching accuracy declines with postural demand during whole-body leaning.

INTRODUCTION: Whole-body movements in everyday tasks challenge the neuromuscular system. Prior studies have shown that appropriate postural control supports both task success and postural balance during quiet standing or under modest postural demands. However, it remains unclear how the central nervous system controls whole-body posture under high-demand conditions, such as maximal leaning postures. Here, we investigated how varying postural demands influence task performance in whole-body tasks. METHODS: We used an upper-body reaching task in which participants leaned their upper body mediol

Skin tone ideologies, body shame, and sexual risk in Latinx young adults: The role of self-esteem.

Latinx young adults in the U.S. experience significant disparities related to body image and sexual health. These challenges partly stem from the intersections of racism, ethnocentrism, and colorism perpetuated through Eurocentric beauty standards and norms surrounding sexuality. Despite the salience of skin tone within the Latinx community, the impact of skin tone ideologies on body shame and sexual risk remains unexplored. Addressing this gap, the present study examined the influence of skin tone ideologies (i.e., colorist attraction and skin tone self-concept) on sexual risk and body shame

Hepatocellular carcinoma induces body mass loss in parallel with osmolyte and water retention in rats.

AIMS: The number of cancer survivors with cardiovascular disease is increasing. However, the effect of cancer on body fluid regulation remains to be clarified. In this study, we evaluated body osmolyte and water imbalance in rats with hepatocellular carcinoma. MAIN METHODS: Wistar rats were administered diethylnitrosamine, a carcinogenic drug, to establish liver cancer. We analyzed tissue osmolyte and water content, and their associations with aldosterone secretion. KEY FINDINGS: Hepatocellular carcinoma rats had significantly reduced body mass and the amount of total body sodium, potassium,

['Barbie Doll Syndrome'. A case report of body dysmorphic disorder].

BACKGROUND: This case report aims to present a 37-year-old women striving to shape her body like a Barbie doll of which she has been fascinated since childhood. She could hardly tolerate any deviation from this beauty ideal. She has been admitted to the psychosomatic ward due to an eating disorder. METHODS: The ICD-10 and DSM-5 criteria were established for axis I disorders and the German version of the SCID II interview (for DSM-4) was applied for axis II disorders. Additionally, the "modified Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale for body dysmorphic disorder" was carried out. RESULTS: The

[Modern imaging techniques in patients with multiple myeloma].

Imaging studies are essential for both diagnosis and initial staging of multiple myeloma, as well as for differentiation from other monoclonal plasma cell diseases. Apart from conventional radiography, a variety of newer imaging modalities including whole-body low-dose-CT, whole-body MRI and 18F-FDG PET/CT may be used for detection of osseous and extraosseous myeloma manifestations. Despite of known limitations such as limited sensitivity and specificity and the inability to detect extraosseous lesions, conventional radiography still remains the gold standard for staging newly diagnosed myelom

A contemporary assessment of carotid body tumor surgery.

Carotid body tumor resection remains a surgical challenge traditionally associated with a 15-30% incidence of cranial nerve injury. The authors reviewed their experience with carotid body tumor surgery to determine whether contemporary awareness of carotid body tumors is leading to earlier detection and operation, resulting in a lower incidence of postoperative cranial nerve injury. Twenty-seven carotid body tumors were resected in 25 patients between 1990 and 2000. No patient died and no patient had postoperative baroreflex failure syndrome. There was 1 stroke (4%) in a patient who required l

Overview of the complications and sequelae in spinal infections.

Spondylitis or infection of the spine is a spectrum of diseases involving the bone, disks, and/or ligaments. Because of a significant increase in the immunocompromised patient population, spinal infections are a growing and changing group of conditions, making the diagnosis based on imaging more challenging. Most cases of spinal infections are pyogenic and occur after hematogeneous spread of an infection located elsewhere in the body. A prompt diagnosis remains crucial and MR imaging remains the cornerstone in the diagnosis. This article provides a pictorial overview of the complications and s

Association between body composition phenotypes and cardiovascular outcomes in patients with coronary artery disease: a retrospective cohort study.

The prognostic value of body composition phenotypes in coronary artery disease (CAD) remains underexplored. We retrospectively analyzed 178 CAD inpatients who underwent bioelectrical impedance analysis (InBody 770). K-means clustering using skeletal muscle index (SMI) and body fat percentage (PBF) as primary discriminators identified three phenotypes: Sarcopenic (lowest SMI, ~5.3 kg/m²), Robust (highest SMI, ~7.6 kg/m²), and Sarcopenic-Obesity (low SMI ~ 5.8 kg/m² and high PBF ~ 36.9%). Multivariate logistic regression assessed their associations with cardiovascular outcomes. The Sarcopenic-Ob

Position-independent functional refinement within the vagus motor topographic map.

Motor neurons in the central nervous system often lie in a continuous topographic map, where neurons that innervate different body parts are spatially intermingled. This is the case for the efferent neurons of the vagus nerve, which innervate diverse muscle and organ targets in the head and viscera for brain-body communication. It remains elusive how neighboring motor neurons with different fixed peripheral axon targets develop the separate somatodendritic (input) connectivity they need to generate spatially precise body control. Here, we show that vagus motor neurons in the zebrafish indeed g

Parasite transmission in size-structured populations.

Host heterogeneity can affect parasite transmission, but determining underlying traits and incorporating them into transmission models remains challenging. Body size is easily measured and affects numerous ecological interactions, including transmission. In the snail-schistosome system, larger snails have a higher exposure to parasites but lower susceptibility to infection per parasite. We quantified the effect of size-based heterogeneity on population-level transmission by conducting transmission trials in differently size-structured snail populations and competing size-dependent transmission

Primate preoptic neurons drive hypothermia and cold defense.

Maintaining body temperature within a narrow range is vital for warm-blooded animals. In rodents, the preoptic area (POA) of the hypothalamus detects and regulates core body temperature. However, knowledge about the thermal regulation center in primates remains limited. Here, we show that activating a subpopulation of POA neurons by a chemogenetic strategy reliably induces hypothermia in anesthetized and freely moving macaques. Comprehensive monitoring of physiological parameters reveals that such hypothermia is accompanied by autonomic changes including a rise in heart rate, skeletal muscle a

[When the leg is the victim of the foot].

Man (homo-erectus, plantigrade) is in constant contact with the ground via his feet which are platforms on which the legs and, above all, the entire body rest. When the body moves, the only segment which remains stable and fixed is the foot, which forms the point of departure of all the muscular actions of this moving body. The slightest deformity of this platform, this foot, will lead to skeletal, musculotendinous and neurovascular problems in the legs, and to pain. Pain due to skeletal problems may be related to fatigue fractures (tibia, fibula) and to posterior tibial periostitis. Pain may

Body temperature, heart rate and long-term outcome of cooled infants: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: Therapeutic hypothermia is a standard of care for neonatal encephalopathy; however, approximately one in two newborn infants fails to respond to this treatment. Recent studies have suggested potential relationships between body temperature, heart rate and the outcome of cooled infants. METHODS: The clinical data of 756 infants registered to the Baby Cooling Registry of Japan between January 2012 and December 2016 were analysed to assess the relationship between body temperature, heart rate and adverse outcomes (death or severe impairment at 18 months corrected age). RESULTS: A lo

Multidetector computed tomography findings in deaths with severe burns.

This study compared autopsy with postmortem multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) findings in charred remains. Seventeen consecutive male subjects (mean age, 29.4 years) who perished in a fire-related event resulting in charred remains underwent total body MDCT immediately prior to routine autopsy that included serum carboxyhemoglobin measurement. MDCT showed all thermal tissue changes (skin and subcutaneous fat loss, skeletal muscle retraction, pugilistic attitude, cortical fractures, bone and organ destruction, thermal epidural hematoma, and thermal amputation) and established all fractur

Rigid bronchoscopy is the gold standard management of inhaled foreign bodies in children: myth or maxim?

Foreign body inhalation carries potential for significant morbidity and mortality. Technological advances in imaging and flexible endoscopes have challenged the status of rigid bronchoscopy as the gold standard for inhaled foreign body management. This review of the assessment and management of inhaled foreign bodies focuses on tracheobronchial foreign bodies in children. Myths surrounding clinical assessment, use of radiography and procedures for addressing foreign bodies are sequentially deconstructed using evidence from the literature. If foreign body aspiration is suspected, prompt interve

[Two atypical courses of bronchial foreign body in children].

The long-term course of bronchial foreign body retention is unknown. This article reports 2 cases with late diagnosis and their progression. In the first case, a transcutaneous eviction of the foreign body occurred. Migration through the lung and the muscular wall might have been facilitated by cough and the elongated shape of the foreign body. In the second case, retention of the foreign body produced bronchiectasis. Given the impossibility of extraction and the localized, symptomatic, and invalidating lung complications, lobectomy was performed. Surgical indications after foreign body inhala

Corneal foreign bodies of coconut origin.

Corneal foreign bodies of varied nature have been reported, however, vegetable foreign bodies in the cornea have seldom been described. A case is reported of a male from the Marshall Islands in the Pacific who retained a number of deep corneal foreign bodies after being struck in the eye by a piece of a coconut shell. The foreign bodies caused considerable inflammation which ceased after they were exposed and removed by means of a centrally based lamellar corneal flap. The patient's eye has remained quiet for 4 months following removal of the foreign bodies.

Effect of scan body geometric configuration and library design on digital implant impression accuracy.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate how variations in scan body geometry, specifically body height and the length of the flat indexing surface (FIS), affect linear and angular accuracy when combined with truncated or full-geometry library files. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nine scan body geometries were fabricated by combining three body heights (4, 5, and 6 mm) with three FIS lengths (1, 2, and 3 mm). Digital impressions were superimposed onto truncated or full-geometry library files. Linear deviation (ΔD) and angular deviation (ΔA) were calculated by comparing aligned sca

Disease-associated adipose browning: current evidence and perspectives.

Brown and beige adipose tissue represent evolutionary adaptations in mammals, functioning as specialized thermogenic organs to maintain body temperature. Over the past two decades, researches have demonstrated that white adipose tissue (WAT) browning is an effective strategy to enhance energy expenditure. However, a growing body of evidence indicates that the browning process frequently occurs in a variety of chronic disease states, though its pathophysiological significance remains unclear. This review summarized evidence of pathological browning observed in human diseases and animal models,
