A case is reported in which a severe open injury of the thigh eventually required amputation of the lower limb. Lengthening of the short proximal femoral stump was achieved by turning over a flap comprising bone and soft tissue, with sensation, from the ipsilateral leg.

In a 4-year period, 18 patients underwent callus distraction of the femur or tibia with the use of a unilateral external fixator. The authors reviewed 477 diaphyseal fractures of the long bones in the lower limbs of children between the ages of one to 11 years treated at our Institute between 1976 and 1982. BACKGROUND: Treatment of tibial nonunion with bone loss is extremely difficult. A variety of techniques have been described, but each has shortcomings, in particular prolonged external fixation time as well as serious complications such as nonunion and infection.
