Prevention and Surgical Management of Auricular Hematoma and Cauliflower Ear.

BACKGROUND: The cauliflower ear or wrestler's ear deformity results from an untreated auricular hematoma. This is due to neocartilage deposition and fibrosis secondary to perichondritis caused by the hematoma leading to the characteristic cauliflower ear appearance. Though some treatment options have been studied, the results have been inconsistent. This review aims to provide a systematic evaluation of available therapeutic strategies for the prevention and treatment of cauliflower ear. METHODS: We performed a search in the Medline and Scopus databases for all articles published until May 20

Prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency in early pregnancies- a Singapore study.

Vitamin D plays an essential role in bone and mineral metabolism. There is increased interest in understanding prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency in pregnancy as many studies report association of low vitamin D levels with obstetric complications and neonatal sequelae. There is a paucity of studies in Singapore evaluating levels of vitamin D levels during the first trimester of pregnancies. We aim to study the prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency in this population. Our study assessed vitamin D levels in these women. Vitamin D (Plasma 25(OH)D concentration) levels in multiracial women during

Prebiotics for people with cystic fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a multisystem disease; the importance of growth and nutritional status is well established given their implications for lung function and overall survivability. Furthermore, it has been established that intestinal microbial imbalance and inflammation are present in people with CF. Oral prebiotics are commercially available substrates that are selectively utilised by host intestinal micro-organisms and may improve both intestinal and overall health. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the benefits and harms of prebiotics for improving health outcomes in children and adu

Rifampicin-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis among tuberculosis-presumptive cases at University of Gondar Hospital, northwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Various studies have reported that the emergence of drug-resistant tuberculosis poses a significant threat to tuberculosis-control programs worldwide. Rifampicin resistance is a surrogate marker of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, since it reveals the presence of greater than 90% isoniazid resistance. Evidence on rifampicin-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis is scarce in the literature. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of rifampicin-resistant M. tuberculosis among tuberculosis-presumptive cases at the University of Gondar Hospital. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective
