The magnitude of the clinical problem of bilateral occurrence of breast cancer is controversial. A prospective study was undertaken to evaluate the significance of asymmetric breast tissue (asymmetric volume of breast tissue, asymmetrically dense breast tissue with preserved architecture, or asymmetrically prominent ducts) on mammograms. Of 8,408 mammograms obtained in 1985, 221 (3%) demonstrated asymmetric breast tissue. Follow-up was 36-42 months after the initial mammographic study. Surgery is the primary treatment for early breast cancer. Several studies have shown that routine postoperative radiation therapy does not increase patient survival. Chemotherapy is currently recommended as an adjuvant to mastectomy in patients with positive axillary nodes. Patients who have recurrent disease and tumors that are hormone-receptor-negative, or tumors that are unresponsive and hormone-receptor-positive, are receiving significant survival benefits from combination chemotherapy.

Nineteen localization biopsies were performed on eighteen women, where routine mammography revealed impalpable abnormalities. These abnormalities are described and the results of biopsy given. Six carcinomas were detected, all of which were shown to have no evidence of metastatic disease.

This study comprises 27 cases of male breast cancer treated at the University Hospital from 1966 through 1978. Its incidence was 0.53% of all cancer in males and 3.2% of all mammary cancers. Mean age was 52 years old. Lump in the breast was the commonest presenting feature in all patients followed by skin ulceration in 44.4% of cases. The average duration of symptoms was 16 months. A review of 52 unselected cases of benign breast masses operated on at the University College Hospital Ibadan, showed that fibroadenoma was the most common benign lesion found, followed by fibrocystic disease of the breast. Fibroadenoma is most common in the second and third decades of life, usually in nulliparous young women, whereas fibrocystic disease is most common in the fifth decade, usually in parous women. Benign breast lesions are more common in the left breast than the right, and the most common location is the upper outer quadrant.

A retrospective experience with breast masses in 143 female and 22 male adolescents is reviewed: 104 females (71.7 per cent) had fibroadenomas and 1 (0.7 per cent) adenocarcinoma; all 22 males had gynecomastia. The significance of these findings is related to surgical therapy.
