The cytopathology of benign and malignant breast lesions is described and correlated with the histopathology. Problems in diagnosis and the advantages of fine-needle aspiration are discussed. The diagnostic accuracy is approximately 93% with this technique.

AIMS: To investigate the prevalence of squamous epidermoid inclusion cysts after wide-core needle biopsy.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Epidermoid inclusion cysts were found in five of 17 surgical excisions (29%) after preliminary wide-core needle biopsies in a 7-month period. Thereafter they were not seen in 26 subsequent postwide-core surgical excisions in a period of 6 months.
CONCLUSIONS: The cysts appear to be an iatrogenic complication of wide-core biopsy, and need morphological recognition in order to avoid confusion with spontaneous squamous metaplasia of benign or malignant breast epithelium

A 46-year-old woman presented with multiple skin lumps and right hip pain. Multiple nodules were palpable in the skin over the chest and abdominal wall, and in both breasts. Bilateral mammograms showed multiple solid masses, while ultrasound demonstrated multiple subcutaneous nodules. An osteolytic lesion was seen on the right hip radiograph. Excisional biopsy of a subcutaneous nodule revealed metastatic adenocarcinoma. The diagnosis of metastases to the breast is discussed, together with imaging features of other multiple breast lesions, such as fibroadenomas and cysts.

Breast pain is a common reason for consultation and a source of anxiety for patients. Cyclical breast pain can be distinguished from non-cyclical pain and breast pain with other symptoms. Many causes, usually benign are possible and the clinical enquiry and physical examination are essential to establish predisposing factors. The authors report about their preliminary experience with MRI in the diagnosis of breast disease. 50 breast masses in 41 consecutive patients have been evaluated by MRI and mammography, some of which have been evaluated by ultrasound, as well. All masses have consequently been biopsied. They include 32 carcinomas, 1 secondary malignant lymphoma, 4 fibroadenomas, 2 papillomas, 3 cysts, 1 hamartoma and 5 dysplastic nodules. Advantages and disadvantages of MRI of the breast are discussed. Possible future indications are suggested for selected cases.

A case of fallopian tube cancer was intraoperatively diagnosed in a patient submitted to laparoscopic hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy because of an ultrasound diagnosis of a probable endometriotic cyst of the right ovary. Postoperatively a complete staging was performed and a synchronous carcinoma of the breast was diagnosed. Consequently the patient completed laparotomic debulking and a left mastectomy. A case of a premenopausal woman with fallopian tube cancer and synchronous breast cancer is reported together with a review of the most recent literature.
