BACKGROUND: Risk of screen-detected breast cancer mostly reflects inherent risk, while risk of interval cancer reflects inherent risk and risk of masking (risk of the tumor not being detected due to increased dense tissue). Therefore the predictors of whether a breast cancer is interval or screen-detected include those that predict masking. Our aim was to investigate the associations between mammographic measures and (1) inherent risk, and (2) masking.
METHODS: We conducted a case-control study nested within the Melbourne collaborative cohort study of 244 screen-detected cases (192 small tumo

BACKGROUND: Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) of the breast represents a heterogeneous group of lesions that show important differences in biologic behavior. New vessel formation has been reported as a prognostic indicator in breast carcinoma, but little information is available about its significance in DCIS. This study was planned to examine angiogenesis in DCIS in relation to histologic subtype, proliferation activity, p53 and bcl-2 expression.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Paraffin sections from 24 cases of DCIS (9 comedo and 15 non comedo type) were studied immunohistochemically using polyclonal

Women with the most extensive breast density, have a 4- to 6-fold higher cancer risk than women with the lowest density. This cross-sectional study evaluated associations of cumulative mammographic density in two distinct ethnic groups with the respective age-specific breast cancer incidences in the population. The study compared four cohorts of 200 women each aged 35 to 49 and 50 to 74, representing Jewish and Arab ethnicity. Breast density measures were calculated from screening mammograms, using a thresholding software (Cumulus). Breast cancer specific incidence values were obtained from th…

BACKGROUND: High breast density is significantly associated with an increased risk of breast diseases. Presently, suspected breast masses assessed as Breast Imaging-Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) grade 4 provide a wide range of positive predictive values. Moreover, subcategories (4a, 4b, and 4c) are still under consideration as the diagnostic criteria are neither comprehensive nor objective. However, whether mammography breast density (MBD) has any impact on the accurate grading of BI-RADS 4 assessed by ultrasound (US) remains unknown.
METHODS: A total of 1,086 women with 1,293 breast ma…

BACKGROUND: Menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) is a risk factor for breast cancer (BC). Evidence suggests that its effect on BC risk could be partly mediated by mammographic density. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between MHT, mammographic density and BC risk using data from a prospective study.
METHODS: We used data from a case-control study nested within the French cohort E3N including 453 cases and 453 matched controls. Measures of mammographic density, history of MHT use during follow-up and information on potential confounders were available for all women. The as

BACKGROUND: High mammographic density is associated with breast cancer and with delayed detection. We have examined whether localized density, at the site of the subsequent cancer, is independently associated with being diagnosed with a large-sized or interval breast cancer.
METHODS: Within a prospective cohort of 63,130 women, we examined 891 women who were diagnosed with incident breast cancer. For 386 women, retrospective localized density assessment was possible. The main outcomes were interval cancer vs. screen-detected cancer and large (> 2 cm) vs. small cancer. In negative screening ma

This study aimed to investigate tumor microvessel density (MVD) and lymphatic vessel density (LVD) using the Chalkley method as predictive markers for the risk of axillary lymph node metastasis and their relationship to other clinicopathological parameters in primary breast cancer cases. Forty two node-positive and eighty node-negative breast cancers were immunostained for CD34 and D2-40. MVD and LVD were counted by the Chalkley method at x400 magnification. There was a positive significant correlation of the MVD with the tumor size, coexisting ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and lymph node me

Temperature distributions achieved during hyperthermic treatment of 16 patients with locally advanced breast cancer were analyzed in relation to tissue perfusion, vascular density, and histology of treated volume. Temperatures were measured using multi-sensor thermistor probes inserted in the center and periphery of the treatment volume. A steady state temperature, Ts, and a perfusion related parameter, PERF, were determined for each probe location. Vascular density and tissue composition were determined by histologic analysis of biopsies taken from the temperature probe locations before treat

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Interobserver variability in breast density and Background Parenchymal Enhancement (BPE) assessment remains a major limitation in Contrast- Enhanced Mammography (CEM) reporting consistency. Building on the BPE-CEM Standard Scale (BCSS) framework introduced in Part 1, this study aimed to evaluate whether a structured artificial intelligence-assisted decision-support model based on expert-derived variables could improve consistency in BCSS-related interpretation, particularly in disagreement-prone dense breast categories, rather than function as an autonomous image-based…

Background: Latinas with mammographic dense breasts are at increased risk of breast cancer. This randomized controlled trial tests the effectiveness of three breast density (BD) educational approaches on adherence to subsequent mammography screening among Latinas receiving care at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). Measure(s): Adherence was ascertained using electronic health record and survey responses. Kaplan-Meier estimates of the time to subsequent mammogram were used to obtain adherence rates at 1- and 2-years post baseline mammogram. Cox modeling assessed whether adherence diffe…

Cancer epidemiology, biomarkers & prevention : a publication of the American Association for Cancer Research, cosponsored by the American Society of Preventive Oncology2020eng
BACKGROUND: Clinical use of breast cancer risk prediction requires simplified models. We evaluate a simplified version of the validated Rosner-Colditz model and add percent mammographic density (MD) and polygenic risk score (PRS), to assess performance from ages 45-74. We validate using the Mayo Mammography Health Study (MMHS).
METHODS: We derived the model in the Nurses' Health Study (NHS) based on: MD, 77 SNP PRS and a questionnaire score (QS; lifestyle and reproductive factors). A total of 2,799 invasive breast cancer cases were diagnosed from 1990-2000. MD (using Cumulus software) and PRS

PURPOSE: Both body mass index (BMI) and breast density impact breast cancer risk in the general population. Whether obesity and density represent additive risk factors in women with lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) is unknown.
METHODS: Patients diagnosed with LCIS from 1988 to 2017 were identified from a prospectively maintained database. BMI was categorized by World Health Organization classification. Density was captured as the mammographic Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BIRADS) value. Other covariates included age at LCIS diagnosis, menopausal status, family history, chemopreven…
