Chiral 1D tin iodides EBASnI3 were synthesized while incorporating enantiomerically pure and racemic ethylbenzylammonium (EBA) cations between the 1D shared inorganic corners. The dimensionality was reduced to 0D when replacing iodine with bromine. In all the cases, the presence of hydrogen bonds was observed between the organic part and the inorganic part, while transfer of chirality was evidenced for the EBASnI3 enantiomerically pure compounds.

A colorimetric anion sensor based on the activated C-H group is described, and the selective and reusable detection of cyanide using the sensor is demonstrated. The system uses bromine to block isomerization and trifluoromethyl-directed C-H regioselective functionalization for direct C-C bond formation between a fluorophore and 2-(pyridin-2-yl)acetonitrile. Thus, this system provides a new way to develop activated CH-based anion receptors.

Clinical efficiency of two methods for the management of irritated bowel syndrome was compared. One was SMC electrophoresis of a chloride/iodine/bromine hydrogen sulphide brine of the Uva spa, the other standard medicamentous therapy. The former method was found to be more efficacious than the latter for the management of irritated bowel syndrome. Positive effects of SMC electrophoreis justify its recommendation as monotherpy for the treatment of the given pathology.

A global multimedia model is used to calculate the fate of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the environment. Special emphasis is given to the importance of direct photolysis, which has been shown to be an important degradation mechanism for highly brominated PBDEs and is believed to result in the formation of lower-brominated PBDEs. Recent studies showed that sulfidated nanoscale zerovalent iron (S-nZVI) is a better reducing agent than nanoscale zerovalen iron (nZVI) alone for reductive dechlorination of several organic solvents such as trichloroethylene (TCE) due to the catalytic role of iron sulfide (FeS). Gas phase reaction of CHClF(2) with CH(3)Br in an alumina tube reactor at 773-1123 K as a function of various input ratios of CH(3)Br to CHClF(2) is presented. The major products detected include C(2)F(4), CH(2)CF(2), and CH(4). Minor products include CH(3)Cl, CHF(3), C(2)H(4), C(2)H(2), CH(2)CF-CF(3), and C(2)H(3)F. [reaction: see text] An efficient copper-catalyzed amination of aryl bromides with primary alkylamines was developed that uses commercially available diethylsalicylamide as the ligand. This amination reaction can be performed at 90 degrees C in good yield. A variety of functional groups are compatible with these reaction conditions. Preliminary results show that this reaction can be carried out under solvent-free conditions with comparable yields.

We report mild new annulation approaches to trisubstituted trifluoromethylthiolated (SCF3) aziridines and cyclopropanes via Darzens inspired protocols. The products of these anionic annulations, rarely studied previously, possess attractive features rendering them valuable building blocks for synthesis platforms. In this study, trisubstituted acetophenone nucleophiles bearing SCF3 and bromine substituents in their α position were shown to undergo [2 + 1] annulations with vinyl ketones and tosyl-protected imines under mild reaction conditions.

The biodegradation of bromoamine acid (BAA) in a combined airlift loop reactor (ALR) and biological activated carbon (BAC) system was investigated. The results showed that the ALR using Sphingomonas xenophaga as inoculum and granular activated carbon (GAC) as carrier, could run steadily for over 3 months at less than 950 mg L(-1) BAA.
