Mechanical Characteristics of Sandwich Structures with 3D-Printed Bio-Inspired Gyroid Structure Core and Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Laminate Face-Sheet.

The gyroid structure is a bio-inspired structure that was discovered in butterfly wings. The geometric design of the gyroid structure in butterfly wings offers a unique combination of strength and flexibility. This study investigated sandwich panels consisting of a 3D-printed gyroid structure core and carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) facing skin. A filament fused fabrication 3D printer machine was used to print the gyroid cores with three different relative densities, namely 10%, 15%, and 20%. Polylactic acid (PLA) was used as the printing material for the gyroid. The gyroid structure wa

Repeated Blood Collection from Tail Vein of Non-Anesthetized Rats with a Vacuum Blood Collection System.

Blood can be collected from rats in a number of sampling locations. For instance, the tail vein is a superior location for blood sampling. However, the tail vein is thin so that it is sometimes hard to puncture. In addition, the tail vein has low blood flow and requires a long sampling time to get sufficient blood. The present report describes a simple blood sampling method, the vacuum blood collection method, which is usually used to obtain blood samples from patients, here used for non-anesthetized rats. The 22 G butterfly needle tip was inserted into one of the lateral tail veins approximat

Comparison of the efficacy of hard palate grafts with acellular human dermis grafts in lower eyelid surgery.

BACKGROUND: The Madame Butterfly procedure of lower eyelid reconstruction addresses lower eyelid retraction after blepharoplasty caused by middle lamellar tethering. After scar lysis and subperiosteal midface lift, the surgical procedure uses a lower eyelid spacer graft to prevent further postoperative contraction of the middle and posterior lamellae. Different graft materials have been used, including autogenous hard palate and AlloDerm. METHODS: The preoperative and postoperative photographs of consecutive patients who had undergone the Madame Butterfly procedure were analyzed retrospective

Reverse osseofasciocutaneous radial forearm flap for thumb reconstruction: a flap design and case series.

PURPOSE: To report the outcome of the modified design of the osseofasciocutaneous radial forearm flap. The flap was modified because of problems associated with the use in thumb reconstruction. METHODS: We performed retrospective review of all patients who sustained nonreplantable thumb amputations who had this procedure between August 2000 and March 2005. The patients' ages ranged between 24 and 39 years. Demographic data and details of the level of amputation and alternative surgical procedures were reviewed. Eight male patients were identified and constituted the study cohort. The size of

Occupational exposure to the human immunodeficiency virus and other blood-borne pathogens. A six-year prospective study.

OBJECTIVE: To prospectively study occupational exposures to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other blood-borne pathogens. DESIGN AND SETTING: Detailed clinical information was collected and follow-up was performed on all health care workers with occupational exposures to potentially infected substances at Fairfield Infectious Diseases Hospital during the period January 1985 to September 1991. RESULTS: There were 230 occupational exposures reported. One hundred and forty-one were considered "significant" or "potentially significant"; these involved exposure (or the potential for exposur

Uncommon cutaneous manifestations of lupus erythematosus.

Cutaneous manifestations of lupus erythematosus (LE) are, usually, characteristic enough to permit an easy diagnosis. However, some patients may present less typical lesions, associated or not to the classic ones. Therefore, irrespectively of the variety of LE (acute, subacute and chronic), in absence of the typical butterfly rash, erythematosquamous papules or plaques, or any of the characteristic cutaneous alterations, it is important (even though not always easy) to recognize the uncommon and/or atypical changes of the skin.

Radionuclide imaging in pyogenic vertebral osteomyelitis.

Five cases of pyogenic vertebral osteomyelitis diagnosed clinically and with radioisotope studies are reported. All patients presented with symptoms of back pain, an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and a normal leukocyte count. Three had positive blood cultures and four had changes on plain radiographs. All five had positive phosphate bone and Ga-67 imaging, and two showed paravertebral uptake of gallium giving a "butterfly"-like appearance.

Temperature and Pollinators Drive Evolutionary and Plastic Variation in Leaf and Petal Epicuticular Waxes.

Plants rely on epicuticular waxes to withstand stress and mediate interactions with other organisms, yet floral waxes remain largely unexplored despite their potential key role in reproduction. We examined how temperature and pollinators shaped leaf and petal waxes in Brassica rapa after six generations of experimental evolution under hot and ambient conditions with bumblebees (Bombus terrestris), Pieris rapae butterflies, acting as "pollinating herbivores" and also involving larval herbivory, or hand-pollination as a control. Leaves contained more wax but shorter aliphatic chains than petals.…

In vitro DNA binding activity and molecular docking reveals pierisin-5 as an anti-proliferative agent against gastric cancer.

Pierisin-5 is a DNA dependent ADP ribosyltransferase (ADRT) protein from the larvae of Indian cabbage white butterfly, Pieris canidia. Interestingly, Pierisin-5 ADP-ribosylates the DNA as a substrate, but not the protein and subsequently persuades apoptotic cell death in human cancer cells. This has led to the investigation on the DNA binding activity of Pierisin-5 using in vitro and in silico approaches in the present study. However, both the structure and the mechanism of ADP-ribosylation of pierisin-5 are unknown. In silico modeled structure of the N-terminal ADRT catalytic domain interacte

Triacylglyceride measurement in small quantities of homogenised insect tissue: comparisons and caveats.

Triacylglycerides (TAGs) are the most important stored energy reserve in eukaryotes and are regularly measured in insects. Quantitative analysis of TAGs is complicated by their diversity of structure, and there are concerns with the quantitative accuracy of commonly used analytical methods. We used thin layer chromatography coupled to a flame ionisation detector (TLC-FID), an accurate method that is not sensitive to saturation or chain length of fatty acids, to quantify TAG content in small amounts of insect tissue, and used it to validate three high-throughput lipid assays (gravimetric, vanil

The ancient dialogue between brain and body.

The brain rarely works alone to control our behavior or physiology. From the rhythm of our heartbeat to the flutter of 'butterflies' in our stomach, it is in constant dialogue with our body. This connection affects how we feel, influences what we pay attention to in our environment and ultimately affects the choices we make. Over the past several decades, research in model organisms has uncovered brain-body circuits that detect and interpret interoceptive (internal) and exteroceptive (external) signals. These studies have revealed how nervous systems integrate sensory inputs with essential hom…

[Pterigium colli: secondary surgical correction of one severe case].

Congenital web neck is a deformity hardly ever reported in the English literature. It is usually associated to Ulrrich-Turner syndrome. There are several options to correct this deformity, but in severe cases complete correction of the web and the abnormal back hair is not always possible. We present our experience with a secondary case where previous butterfly method was employed, a combined procedure was used achieving a satisfactory result. We considered that this technique is useful and offers an important improvement of the contour.

Clinics in diagnostic imaging (60). Insufficiency fractures of the pelvis.

An 80-year-old woman presented with severe low back pain of gradual onset. Her walking ability was affected. Physical examination was essentially negative. Bone scintiscans showed a butterfly-shaped area of increased sacral uptake as well as focal pubic uptake. The diagnosis of sacral and parasymphyseal insufficiency fractures was confirmed by CT. The patient recovered well with conservative management. The clinical and imaging features, and management of insufficiency fractures of the pelvis are discussed.

Floral volatiles interfere with plant attraction of parasitoids: ontogeny-dependent infochemical dynamics in Brassica rapa.

BACKGROUND: The role of plant ontogeny on investment in direct defense against herbivores is well accepted, but the transition from the vegetative to the reproductive stage can also affect indirect resistance traits (i.e. attraction of the natural enemies of plant attackers). Here, we conducted behavioral bioassays in olfactometers to determine whether the developmental stage (vegetative, pre-flowering, and flowering) of Brassica rapa plants affects attraction of Cotesia glomerata, a parasitoid of the herbivore Pieris brassicae, and examined the blends of volatile compounds emitted by plants a

Cyanide detoxification in an insect herbivore: Molecular identification of β-cyanoalanine synthases from Pieris rapae.

Cyanogenic compounds occur widely in the plant kingdom. Therefore, many herbivores are adapted to the presence of these compounds in their diet by either avoiding cyanide release or by efficient cyanide detoxification mechanisms. The mechanisms of adaptation are not fully understood. Larvae of Pieris rapae (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) are specialist herbivores on glucosinolate-containing plants. They are exposed to cyanide during metabolism of phenylacetonitrile, a product of benzylglucosinolate breakdown catalyzed by plant myrosinases and larval nitrile-specifier protein (NSP) in the gut. Cyanide
