Interaction of metal ions with cadmium-induced cellular toxicity.

Interactions between Cd and other metal ions are important from both nutritional and toxicological aspects. As Cd is toxic to isolated hepatocytes, these cells can be used to investigate the effects of other metals on Cd-induced cellular injury. Isolated hepatocytes were incubated at 37 degrees C with vehicle (saline); Cd (200 or 400 microM); or Cd plus Cr, Mn, Zn, Ni, Pb, Se, or Fe (200-1000 microM). Evidence of cellular injury was assessed by loss of intracellular K+ and aspartate aminotransferase from the hepatocytes. Effects on lipid peroxidation, as measured by concentration of the thioba

Metabolic fate of earthworm cadmium-binding proteins in rats.

Three different molecular weight cadmium-binding proteins isolated from the earthworm, Eisenia foetida, were injected intraperitoneally into young female rats. Cadmium bound to earthworm protein-I (estimated molecular weight, 63,000-70,000 daltons) and -II (estimated molecular weight about 7,000 daltons) was recovered from the kidney supernatants as metallothionein, which indicated that the proteins were degraded and that the cadmium liberated from the degraded proteins induced metallothionein biosynthesis in the kidneys. However, cadmium bound to earth-worm protein-III (estimated apparent mol…

Hydrodynamic control of cadmium retention and bioaccumulation in a temperate estuary.

Understanding the sources, transport, and persistence of pollutants in estuarine systems is essential for assessing ecological risk and supporting effective management. Whilst cadmium (Cd), a persistent trace-metal in coastal waters, presents a challenge due to its toxicity and high capacity for bioaccumulation in benthic organisms, its cycling is well-understood compared to other heavy metals. In this study, we combine available Cd observations with numerical modeling to develop a first three-dimensional, system-scale model of dissolved Cd dispersal and bioaccumulation in blue mussels (Mytilu…

How Adequate Are the Guidelines for Dietary and Workplace Exposure to Cadmium?

Cadmium (Cd) is a heavy metal pollutant to which most people are exposed daily through their diet because of its presence in nearly all food types, including potatoes, vegetables, cereals, grains, legumes, shellfish, and organ meat. Cd has no physiological role or nutritional value in the body and causes toxicity to multiple tissues and organs via oxidative stress and chronic inflammation; as such, at high prevalence, it is frequently associated with diseases, notably cancer, heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, and chronic kidney disease. Using kidneys and bones as critical toxicity targets…

Cadmium Toxicity to the Animal Reproductive Systems: A Narrative Review.

Cadmium is a heavy metal used in industrial processes that can be released into the environment, where it accumulates in plants. When animals consume these plants, resistance to metabolic elimination results in cadmium accumulation in tissues, inducing damage to multiple organs, particularly the testes and ovaries, thereby impairing reproductive fitness. A substantial body of recent research has explored the ways in which this damage is passed down to the offspring of affected animals, resulting in transgenerational reproductive harm. In this review, we provide a brief overview of the ways in …

Emission of CO2 enhanced by thiamethoxam and cadmium in agricultural soil.

The coexistence of neonicotinoid insecticide thiamethoxam (TMX) and heavy metal cadmium (Cd) is quite common in agricultural soils, yet their effects on the emission of greenhouse gas CO2 remain insufficiently studied. To address this issue, microcosms spiked with singe or combined TMX (20 mg/kg) and Cd (20 mg/kg) in soil were studied for 90 days. It turned out that single TMX (+12.13 %) and Cd (+22.76 %) both stimulated the emission of CO2, and the combined TMX and Cd exhibited synergic effect (+51.00 %). The presence of Cd reduced the attenuation of TMX (-3.32 %), while the presence of TMX i…

ATF6 is a critical regulator of cadmium-mediated apoptosis in spermatocytes.

In this study, we examined the mechanisms of cadmium exposure-induced endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response and apoptosis in spermatocytes. Responses to cadmium toxicity were investigated using spermatocytes overexpressing p50ATF6, ATF4, and spliced XBP1s, belonging to the 3 unfolded protein response pathways. The ER stress and apoptosis response to cadmium were most strongly stimulated through the activating transcription factor 6 (ATF6) pathway; in contrast, siRNA-induced inhibition of protein expression could reduce apoptosis under stressful conditions. An in vivo experiment using mice…

The detoxification of cadmium in Japanese quail by pomegranate peel powder.

Environmental pollution and exposure to toxic metals such as cadmium (Cd) can cause severe and chronic diseases and have significant side effects on vital organs. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of pomegranate peel on biochemical factors and lipid peroxidation in intoxication by Cd in Japanese quail. Two hundred seventy quails in different groups were fed diets containing Cd and pomegranate peel from 6 to 35 days old. Then, serum biochemical parameters were assessed, including liver enzymes, urea, and thiobarbituric acid. In the quails, Cd significantly increased MDA, urea, and …

Individual and combined effects of cadmium and lead exposure in rats.

The exposure of humans and animals to environmental compounds is rarely restricted to a single chemical. Cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) are two heavy metals known to be the most toxic. Deleterious effects of each metal alone are well documented. Unfortunately, very few studies were conducted to determine their combined effect. Four groups of Wistar rats were treated intravenously for 15 days. The control group received physiological saline solution; groups 2 and 3 were treated with Cd chloride and lead acetate, respectively ; and the treatment group 4 received a combined treatment of Cd and Pb . A…

Impact of Cadmium Mediated by Tobacco Use in Musculoskeletal Diseases.

Tobacco use has a negative impact on health due to its relationship with the development of high-mortality diseases, such as pulmonary cancer. However, the effect of cadmium (Cd), present in tobacco smoke, on the development of joint diseases has been scarcely studied. The objective of this review is to discuss the evidence regarding the mechanisms by which Cd exposure, through tobacco smoke, may lead to the development of osteoarthritis (OA), osteoporosis (OP), and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). There's evidence suggesting a string association between moderate to severe OA development and tobacco…

The Role of Manganese, Cadmium, Chromium and Selenium on Subjective Tinnitus.

Elevated levels of heavy metals like cadmium (Cd) and manganese (Mn) are known to lead to oxidative damage-related oto-toxicity and decreased levels of chromium (Cr) and selenium (Se) are known to lead to oto-toxicity due to reduced anti-oxidant activity. The aim of the present study was to evaluate serum levels of Cd, Mn, Cr, and Se and their relationship with tinnitus. A total of 48 patients with tinnitus (Group 1) and 40 healthy controls (Group 2) were included in the study. All participants were applied audiology tests. Severity of tinnitus was measured with Tinnitus Severity Index Questio…

Impact of silymarin on cadmium-induced apoptosis in human spermatozoa.

Oxidative stress-induced apoptosis in spermatozoa may lead to male infertility. Environmental pollutants and heavy metals such as cadmium cause harmful effects on the reproductive system and sperm parameters through the induction of oxidative stress. Silymarin, as a potent antioxidant, is able to inhibit oxidative stress. This study was performed to investigate the protective effects of silymarin on cadmium-induced toxicity in human spermatozoa. Sperm samples were divided into the following five groups: (a) spermatozoa at 0 min, (b) spermatozoa in the control group, (c) spermatozoa treated wit…

Zinc and Cadmium in the Aetiology and Pathogenesis of Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are inflammatory articular conditions with different aetiology, but both result in joint damage. The nutritionally essential metal zinc (Zn2+) and the non-essential metal cadmium (Cd2+) have roles in these arthritic diseases as effectors of the immune system, inflammation, and metabolism. Despite both metal ions being redox-inert in biology, they affect the redox balance. It has been known for decades that zinc decreases in the blood of RA patients. It is largely unknown, however, whether this change is only a manifestation of an acute phase re…

Tissue distribution of tetrabromobisphenol A and cadmium in mixture inhalation exposure.

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and cadmium chloride (CdCl2) are the typical representative pollutants of brominated flame retardants and heavy metals found in the air of e-waste recycling workshops. However, their metabolic kinetics through mixture inhalation is unknown. In the present study, 8-week old Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) male mice were whole-body exposed to TBBPA and CdCl2 mixtures by inhalation. Tissue samples were collected for TBBPA and cadmium (Cd) analysis at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks during exposure and at 4 and 8 weeks after the completion of the 8-week exposure period. TBBPA…

The ABC transporter ABCG36 is required for cadmium tolerance in rice.

Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic heavy metal in nature, which causes severe damage to plant growth. The molecular mechanisms for Cd detoxification are poorly understood. Here, we report that a G-type ATP-binding cassette transporter, OsABCG36, is involved in Cd tolerance in rice. OsABCG36 was expressed in both roots and shoots at a low level, but expression in the roots rather than the shoots was greatly up-regulated by a short exposure to Cd. A spatial expression analysis showed that Cd-induced expression of OsABCG36 was found in both the root tip and the mature root region. Transient expressio…
