Objective. We aimed to investigate the clinicopathological features and pathogenesis of scrotal calcinosis. Methods. Hematoxylin and eosin (HE)-stained slides were performed on 14 patients with scrotal calcinosis, and the clinicopathological characteristics were analyzed together with clinical data. Meanwhile, 81 patients with extrascrotal calcinosis cutis and 7480 patients with epidermoid cysts without calcification in the skin of various parts of the body were collected and analyzed to explore the etiology and pathogenesis of scrotal calcinosis in conjunction with the literature review. Resu…

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic scrotal calcinosis (ISC) is a manifestation of idiopathic calcinosis cutis, and its etiology is still unknown.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 36-year-old patient manifested multiple gradually increasing yellowish-white scrotal nodules with occasional itching and stinging in the past 6 years and was successfully cured via surgical excision. The laboratory test combined with pathological analysis confirmed the diagnosis of ISC. Like pathological calcinosis in other soft tissues, a large amount of collagen fiber deposition was observed around the calcification nodule, sugg…

Calcinosis cutis is a heterotopic accumulation of calcium salts in the skin. It has been described as a late-onset complication of burn scars in a few cases, in contrast to heterotopic ossification, which may be an early-onset complication of burn injuries. Diagnosis of calcinosis can be confirmed by radiography, ultrasonography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging or histology. Almost all cases of late-onset calcinosis in burn scars present as non-healing ulcers on the lower extremities near contracture bands. It has been hypothesized that this localization is due to the more freq…

Four forms of calcinosis cutis exist: metastatic calcinosis, dystrophic calcinosis, idiopathic calcinosis, and subepidermal calcified nodules, usually referred to as cutaneous calculi because single, small, raised, hard nodules are present. Occasionally, there are two or three nodules, and in some instances there are numerous or even innumerable nodules. Most patients are children, but in some patients, a nodule is present already at birth or does not appear until about adult life; in some instances, the surface of the nodule is verrucous, but it may be smooth. The most common location of the …

A patient with dermatomyositis developed malignant transformation of the benign interfascial heterotopic bone. This patient had classic childhood dermatomyositis at the age of 3 years, and the disease was arrested after a one-year course of corticosteroid therapy. Extensive subcutaneous calcinosis cutis and deep interfascial calcinosis were the residua of the disease. Twenty-eight years later, the patient developed a high-grade osteosarcoma within the benign intermuscular heterotopic calcification and ossification that had been previously documented at the age of 8 years by a roentgenogram and…

BACKGROUND: Calcinosis cutis is one of the most refractory complications of dermatomyositis (DM), particularly in patients with anti-nuclear matrix protein 2 (NXP2) autoantibodies. Whether tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) blockade is associated with regression of established calcinosis remains uncertain.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, single-center study of nine patients with refractory dermatomyositis or juvenile dermatomyositis treated with TNF-α inhibitors (infliximab or adalimumab). Myositis-specific autoantibodies, longitudinal muscle strength (MMT8, CMAS), glucocorticoid expo…

Dystrophic calcinosis cutis was commonly described in long-term dermatomyositis or systemic sclerosis, being rarely reported in other connective tissue diseases. We report the case of a 65-years old woman with an only 5-years history of systemic lupus erythematosus, who presents with multiple, impressive subcutaneous calcified masses and biological normal serum calcium and phosphate levels.

The finding of intraoral telangiectasias in two patients previously diagnosed with Raynaud disease is reported. Neither patient exhibited any other feature of CREST syndrome, namely, calcinosis cutis, esophageal dysfunction, or sclerodactyly. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first time intraoral telangiectasias has been reported in conjunction with Raynaud disease in the absence of any other features of CREST syndrome.

Subepidermal calcified nodule (SCN) is a rare form of calcinosis cutis that presents as a solitary verrucous nodule on the face. Here, we report an unusual case of SCN. A healthy 2-year-old boy presented with multiple, round, hard, yellow-white to erythematous lesions on his right thigh. Histopathologic examination of a punch biopsy specimen revealed deposition of calcium in the dermis.

A form of idiopathic calcinosis cutis, subepidermal calcified nodule (SCN), recurred twice on the nasal ala of a healthy 6-year-old girl whose serum calcium and phosphorus levels were within normal limits. Basophilic granular material and numerous mast cells were present in the superficial dermis. The pathogenesis of SCN is uncertain, but the clinical and histologic features of this lesion are distinctive.

UNLABELLED: We present a patient with poikiloderma, severe osteoporosis and a mild intellectual disability. At the age of 9 years, this patient was proposed to suffer from a novel disease entity designated as calcinosis cutis, osteoma cutis, poikiloderma and skeletal abnormalities (COPS) syndrome. At the age of 35, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma. Recently, biallelic pathogenic variants in the RECQL4 gene were detected (c.1048_1049delAG and c.1391-1G>A), confirming a diagnosis of Rothmund-Thomson syndrome (RTS). In the brother of this patient, who had a milder phenotype, a similar dia…

CREST syndrome is a slowly progressive form of systemic scleroderma. It is characterized by calcinosis cutis, Raynaud's phenomenon, esophageal involvement, sclerodactyly, and telangiectasia. There are limited reports of dental treatment for patients with this syndrome, and no reports of periodontal surgical procedures. This paper presents a case report of periodontal surgical treatment in a 38-year-old female patient with CREST syndrome, and a discussion of the clinical manifestations of the syndrome as they relate to dental treatment.

In hyperadrenocorticism in the dog, cutaneous lesions may include alopecia, thin, hypotonic skin, hyperpigmentation, comedones, calcinosis cutis, secondary bacterial and fungal infections, and demodicosis. Skin lesions affecting only the face have not been reported in reviews of hyperadrenocorticism, nor has the disease been included in the differential diagnoses of facial dermatoses. This report involves 4 dogs with hyperadrenocorticism in which cutaneous signs were limited to the face.

Juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) is a rare childhood disease with autoimmune association. Environmental factors are known to trigger JDM in genetically susceptible individuals (Schmieder et al., Dermatol Online 6:3, 2009). Calcinosis is a well-established complication of JDM. Prevalence is higher in children (30-70%; Özkaya et al., Erciyes Med J 30(1):40-43, 2008). Hyperimmunoglobulin E syndrome is a primary immunodeficiency syndrome with multiple recurrent abscess formation and raised serum immunoglobulin E levels. We report a case of JDM with calcinosis cutis universalis with hyperimmunoglobul…

Parathyroid allotransplantation was performed in a 25-year-old woman with idiopathic hypoparathyroidism that had been diagnosed at age 4 years. Long-term medical management of the primary condition with vitamin D and oral calcium supplementation was complicated by multiorgan calcinosis and renal failure. At the age of 21 years she received a successful cadaver renal allograft. Four years later she developed calcinosis cutis with widespread skin necrosis. Medical control of calcium and phosphate metabolism was unsatisfactory and the skin necrosis became progressive and life threatening. A parat…

Cutaneous dystrophic calcification as a late change of radiation therapy is a rarely reported finding. Initially, it was almost exclusively described as occurring on the chest wall in breast cancer patients but has since been described in several other malignancies. We describe the first reported case of radiotherapy-induced calcinosis cutis occurring at the site of a previous liposarcoma. Review of the literature including risk factors, similar cases, pathophysiology, and management is also explored.

The skin changes reported in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are diverse and manifold. In this article we focus on a collection of specific cutaneous entities seen most frequently in the setting of ESRD, each presenting with distinctive and unique morphology. These include perforating disorders, porphyria cutanea tarda, pseudoporphyria, calcinosis cutis, calciphylaxis, and nephrogenic systemic fibrosis. The clinical features, histopathology, pathophysiology, differential diagnosis, and management of each entity are reviewed.
