Characteristics of hazardous material spills from reporting systems in California.

Data on hazardous material releases that occurred between January 1, 1982 and September 30, 1983 in California were obtained from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the US Department of Transportation (DOT). The majority of incidents involved highway transport of hazardous materials, although some information was available on air, rail, and stationary facility releases. Vehicle accidents and failure of or damage to the container were the most frequent causes of releases. Proportionately more hazardous materials incidents occurred in early summer than at other times of the year, during wee…

The University of California, San Francisco/Storz cochlear implant program.

Using a four-channel implant system with a vocoder-based processor developed at UCSF over an extensive period of research, clinical trials of the UCSF/Storz device were initiated in February 1985 under the sponsorship of Storz Instrument Company. To date, 13 patients have been implanted with the UCSF/Storz device, 10 of whom have been fitted with their external processor and transmitter and have received at least their initial postoperative evaluations. Of these 10 patients, nine are able to use all four channels of their implant system. The device fitting/adjusting process for these patients

Scalable treatment algorithm focused on hypertension management for the University of California.

Uncontrolled hypertension remains a leading contributor to morbidity and mortality, particularly among underserved populations. To address care variability and disparities in treatment, the University of California Health system developed and implemented the UC Way Hypertension Medication Algorithm across six academic health centres. This standardised, evidence-based protocol was co-developed by a team of multidisciplinary experts in pharmacy, cardiology, primary care and data science, with an emphasis on medication affordability and the use of two-drug fixed dose combinations as first-line th…

A retrospective study of catastrophic pelvic fractures in California Thoroughbred racehorses.

Here, we describe and characterize catastrophic pelvic fractures in Thoroughbred racehorses in California. We reviewed retrospectively racehorse autopsy reports from horses that died spontaneously or were euthanized because of complete pelvic fractures in California between 1992 and 2018. The exercise history of affected horses was compared with eventmatched control horses. Catastrophic pelvic fractures were sustained by 133 horses. Pelvic fractures were 2.7% of all musculoskeletal fatalities. Pelvic fractures occurred during training (48.0%), racing (35.0%), and non-exercise (17.0%). Horses ≤…

Knowledge and Barriers to HIV Pre-exposure Prophylaxis in Southern California.

Despite the proven effectiveness of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), its use remains low in high-incidence areas. This study examined knowledge and barriers to PrEP among individuals at risk in Southern California. From September 2022 to April 2023, we recruited adult men who have sex with men, residing in San Bernardino and Riverside counties, who were not living with HIV and not using PrEP. Recruitment occurred through targeted online advertisements and clinic-distributed materials. Statistical analyses explored associations between demographic factors and …

Emergency managers' challenges with wildfires and related cascading hazards in California.

This study investigates the complexities faced by emergency managers in wildfire-prone areas to uncover pressing issues and potential solutions. Four themes are discerned through three focus group discussions with emergency managers from nine counties across California. First, there is unequal access to resources for both risk assessment and response, with counties that have fewer resources facing significant challenges in effectively managing wildfire risks. Second, effective risk communication depends on the available resources and the unique characteristics of each community. Participants s…

A retrospective study of radial fractures in racehorses in California, 2006-2022.

Radial fractures are relatively uncommon (0-1%) injuries in postmortem studies of racehorses, and few cases have been published. We describe here a series of 42 cases of radial fractures observed in California racehorses. Autopsy findings from all racehorses submitted for postmortem examination between 2006 July 1 and 2022 June 30 that had a recorded radial fracture were evaluated. We included 42 horses (30 Thoroughbreds, 12 Quarter Horses), most of which were 3-5-y-old. Catastrophic radial fracture was observed in 30 (71%) horses; in the remaining 12 (29%) horses, the fracture of the radius w…

Invasive Conidiobolus infection in an immunocompromised pediatric patient in Southern California.

BACKGROUND: Conidiobolus species are largely known to cause rhinofacial cellulitis in healthy individuals but can manifest as an invasive infection in immunocompromised patients. Few cases have been described in the literature as they are difficult to diagnose and rarely observed in North America, particularly in the pediatric population. CASE SUMMARY: A 15-year-old boy with a history of multiple bone marrow transplants for mixed phenotype acute leukemia presented to the emergency department with febrile neutropenia and chills. His clinical course was complicated by potential Rothia mucilagin
