Low vision aids provision in an urban setting in Germany between 2014 and 2017: a regional population based study with healthcare claims data.

PURPOSE: Little is known about the utilization of low vision services (LVS) in Germany. To understand which persons and how often these serv … viduals most commonly redeemed a prescription for magnifiers (35.8%), screen readers (34.3%) and/or canes (17.1%). Of the entire study population, 75.4% received their prescription from an ophthalmologist, 5.3% from a general practitioner and 7.1% from other medical specialists. Significant trends in characteristics of individuals who redeemed an LVA pr …

Polysaccharide from Tetrastigma hemsleyanum Diels et Gilg attenuates Poly(I:C)-induced acute lung injury by preserving epithelial barrier integrity and modulating STING/TBK1-NF-κB and IRF1-STAT1 signaling.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Tetrastigma hemsleyanum Diels et Gilg, traditionally used in southern China to treat fever, cough, and pneumonia, is a well-known ethnomedicinal plant. Polysaccharides extracted from its aboveground parts (leaves and canes) possess potent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory activities. However, the mechanisms underlying their protective effects against viral-mimic acute lung injury (ALI) remain largely unexplored. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Mice were pretreated with STHP-5 (1-4 mg/kg, intratracheal instillation) once daily for three days before Poly(I:C) challen…

DNA methylation is associated with genomic architecture, genetic variation and dispersal-related traits in an expanding invasion.

The importance of epigenetics in invasion biology is debated. In particular, the role of epigenetic mechanisms, such as DNA methylation, as potential drivers of rapid adaptation compensating for reduced genetic diversity remains an open question. Introduced to Australia 90 years ago, cane toads (Rhinella marina) are spreading at an ever-increasing rate. Across the invasion range, toads display overall low genetic diversity, yet paradoxically show high phenotypic variation in dispersal-related traits. Here, we use a common-garden experiment to investigate the role of DNA methylation in fosterin

In an arms race between host and parasite, a lungworm's ability to infect a toad is determined by host susceptibility not parasite preference.

Evolutionary arms races can alter both parasite infectivity and host resistance, and it is difficult to separate the effects of these twin determinants of infection outcomes. We used a co-introduced, invasive host-parasite system (the lungworm Rhabdias pseudosphaerocephala and cane toads Rhinella marina), where rapid adaptation and dispersal have led to population differences in infection resistance. We quantified behavioural responses of parasite larvae to skin-chemical cues of toads from different invasive populations, and rates at which juvenile hosts became infected following standardized

Crosslinked chitosan embedded TiO2 NPs and carbon dots-based nanocomposite: An excellent photocatalyst under sunlight irradiation.

Herein, a new hybrid nanocomposite, comprising of titania nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) and carbon dots (CDs) deposited polyvinyl imidazole crosslinked chitosan [cl-Ch-p(VI)/TiO2NPs-CDs] has been developed. The nanocomposite has been synthesised by in-situ deposition of TiO2 NPs and CDs onto the surface of the copolymer under microwave irradiation. To the best of our knowledge, this in-situ approach has effectively been applied for the first time to fabricate green fluorescent CDs from sugar cane juice at moderate temperature (75 °C) under microwave irradiation. The developed nanocomposite has been

Flammability of Cellulose-Based Fibers and the Effect of Structure of Phosphorus Compounds on Their Flame Retardancy.

Cellulose fibers are promoted for use in various textile applications due their sustainable nature. Cellulose-based fibers vary considerably in their mechanical and flammability properties depending on their chemical composition. The chemical composition of a cellulose-based fiber is further dependent on their source (i.e., seed, leaf, cane, fruit, wood, bast, and grass). Being organic in nature, cellulose fibers, and their products thereof, pose considerable fire risk. In this work we have compared the flammability properties of cellulose fibers obtained from two different sources (i.e., cott

Assistive device use and mobility-related factors among adults aged≥65years.

INTRODUCTION: Examining how assistive device (cane, walker) use relates to other mobility factors can provide insight into older adults' future mobility needs. METHODS: Data come from the Second Injury Control and Risk Survey, Phase 2 (ICARIS2-P2), conducted from March 2007 to May 2008. Prevalence estimates were calculated for older adults (aged ≥65) and multivariable logistic regression was used to explore associations between assistive device use and mobility-related characteristics. RESULT: Compared with non-users, assistive device users were more likely to report a recent fall (AOR 12.0;

Study of postures in sugarcane cutters in the Pontal of Paranapanema-SP, Brazil.

The expansion of sugarcane monoculture in Brazil in the last decades has pointed out to the necessity of considering the question of sugarcane cutters occupational health. In this work we present a cross-sectional study aiming to examine the occupational posture of a group of sugarcane cutters, which work in a cane field located in the region of Pontal do Paranapanema- SP, Brazil. The study was made using the Ergonomic Analysis of Work - EAW methodology and the postural analysis method by Win-OWAS. Through the obtained records of postures, it was observed that during a workday the sugarcane cu

[Effects of piracetam therapy in a case of Lance-Adams syndrome].

We report a 17-year-old female patient with Lance-Adams syndrome caused by anoxic encephalopathy during a severe attack of bronchial asthma. She had difficulty in writing because of action myoclonus in her arms. She also exhibited freezing gait and was unable to walk without cane. Although her gait disturbance resembled those seen in patients with parkinsonism secondary to anoxic encephalopathy, surface electromyography revealed that it was caused by action myoclonus in her legs. The presence of giant somatosensory evoked potentials and enhanced cortical reflexes in response to the electrical

Treating extensor mechanism disruption after total knee arthroplasty.

A consecutive series of 14 patients with chronic extensor mechanism disruption after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) were treated with allograft reconstruction. Preoperatively all patients had full passive extension but a complete extensor lag. The average time from extensor mechanism disruption to surgery was 7 months (range, 3-24 months). Two methods of reconstruction were used depending on specific indications: an Achilles tendon with calcaneal bone block (eight patients) or a quadriceps tendon-patella-patellar tendon-tibial tubercle composite graft (six patients). At followup averaging 42 mo

Isolation and characterization of pirital virus, a newly discovered South American arenavirus.

Specific rodent species are principal hosts for each of the well-characterized members of the virus family Arenaviridae. Guanarito virus (Arenaviridae) is the etiologic agent of Venezuelan hemorrhagic fever. A previous study on the epidemiology of Venezuelan hemorrhagic fever revealed extensive arenavirus infection (presumed to be caused by Guanarito virus) in two rodent species. Sigmodon alstoni and Zygodontomys brevicauda, collected from the region of Venezuela in which the disease is endemic. In the present study, four arenavirus isolates recovered from the Municipality of Guanarito (two is

An epidemic of yellow fever in Central Brazil, 1972-1973. II. Ecological studies.

Results of ecological studies undertaken during the 1972-1973 epidemic of yellow fever (YF) in Goiás State, Brazil, suggest that mosquitoes of the genus Haemagogus were the only vectors infected with YF virus. Nine isolations of the agent were made from 1,688 Haemagogus spp. caught within or near forests from 27 January to 3 March 1973. Seven of these isolations cane from mosquitoes collected on the forest floor. No YF virus isolation was made from 791 Haemagogus leucocelaenus or 1,096 Sabethes chloropterus. Haemagogus were caught both in and outside houses located 500 m from the forest, altho

Access to eye care and support services among adults from minority ethnic communities living with visual impairment in the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: Despite an increased risk of certain eye conditions which can lead to visual impairment (V.I.), there is evidence of a greater delay to treatment-seeking among adults from minority ethnic communities (MEC). MEC adults may also be underrepresented on V.I. registers, within early intervention services, and among the beneficiaries of national V.I. charities. However, much of this evidence is outdated or anecdotal. METHODS: This secondary analysis of V.I. Lives survey data explored use of eye health and support services and mobility aids among a matched control sample of 77 MEC and 77
