The expression of gangliosides of ganglio-series as well as neolacto-series gangliosides in anencephalic and in normal human fetal brain was compared with that in adult brain by immunostaining on thin-layer chromatograms. Group B streptococci (GBS) are the most common cause of bacterial sepsis and meningitis in neonates in the United States. Although the capsular polysaccharide of GBS is an important virulence factor, it is variably immunogenic in humans. Hoodigosides A-K (1-11), eleven new oxypregnane glycosides and a previously reported oxypregnane glycoside P57AS3 were isolated from the aerial parts of Hoodia gordonii. The structures of these 12-O-beta-tigloyl isoramanone glycosides were determined on the basis of chemical evidence and extensive spectroscopic methods that include one-dimensional and two-dimensional NMR. Cytotoxicity and antioxidant activities of these compounds were tested in cell based assays where they were found to be inactive.

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) represents a major virulence factor of Gram-negative bacteria ('endotoxin') that can cause septic shock in mammals including man. Glycosphingolipids were determined in human spinal cord, cauda equina and femoral nerve of 10 subjects aged 20-70 years and in dorsal and ventral roots of four subjects aged 17-60 years. Dermatan sulphate is a co-polymer of two types of disaccharide repeats: D-glucuronate-N-acetylgalactosamine and L-iduronate-N-acetylgalactosamine.
