Peripartum cardiomyopathy is a potentially life-threatening pregnancy-associated disease that typically arises in the peripartum period and is marked by left ventricular dysfunction and heart failure. The disease is relatively uncommon, but its incidence is rising. Women often recover cardiac function, but long-lasting morbidity and mortality are not infrequent. Management of peripartum cardiomyopathy is largely limited to the same neurohormonal antagonists used in other forms of cardiomyopathy, and no proven disease-specific therapies exist yet. Research in the past decade has suggested that

Noncompaction cardiomyopathy (NCCM) is a genetic myocardial disorder, which is characterized by a two-layered ventricle wall with a thin compact outer layer and a noncompacted inner layer, with prominent trabeculations and deep intratrabecular recesses communicating with the ventricle cavity without any contact to the coronary system. Before the initial description as isolated left ventricle cardiomyopathy (ILVCN) in 1984 by Engberding and Bender, the morphological characteristics had been described only in association with other congenital cardiac disorders, such as atresia of the semilunar v

During the course of cirrhosis, there is a progressive deterioration of cardiac function manifested by the disappearance of the hyperdynamic circulation due to a failure in heart function with decreased cardiac output. This is due to a deterioration in inotropic and chronotropic function which takes place in parallel with a diastolic dysfunction and cardiac hypertrophy in the absence of other known cardiac disease. Other findings of this specific cardiomyopathy include impaired contractile responsiveness to stress stimuli and electrophysiological abnormalities with prolonged QT interval. The p

Peripartum cardiomyopathy is a very rare, but serious life-threatening emergency. Early recognition of signs and symptoms, along with radiologic imaging and blood work, can facilitate timely diagnosis. Once peripartum cardiomyopathy is diagnosed, a multidisciplinary team can facilitate the delivery of quality care to promote optimal outcomes.

Cardiomyopathy during pregnancy is uncommon but potentially catastrophic to maternal health, accounting for up to 11% of maternal deaths. Peripartum cardiomyopathy is diagnosed in women without a history of heart disease 1 month before delivery or within 5 months postpartum. About half of all women will have full myocardial recovery within 6 months of diagnosis, but complications such as severe heart failure or death are not rare. African-American women have higher rates of diagnosis and adverse events. Women with preexisting cardiomyopathy, such as dilated or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, foll

Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a dilated cardiomyopathy in which left ventricular systolic dysfunction and symptoms of heart failure occur between the late stages of pregnancy and the early postpartum period. It is relatively uncommon. In this case report I describe the development of PPCM in the first pregnancy of a woman of older maternal age.

In 1971, Demakis and colleagues established the term peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) and defined it by criteria based on the clinical profile of their patients. With the recognition that these criteria are arbitrary and that PPCM often presents earlier in pregnancy, the definition of PPCM has been recently updated by a working group on PPCM of the European Society of Cardiology. This article discusses the cause, clinical presentation, prognosis, and treatment of PPCM, as well as other related topics.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a myocardial disease characterized by myocardial hypertrophy, disorganization of cardiac myocytes, and fibrosis. Twenty-five percent of patients have a dynamic left ventricular outflow tract gradient caused by the combined effects of rapid ventricular ejection, a narrowed outflow tract, and systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve. Most cases are caused by mutations in genes that encode cardiac sarcomeric proteins. Patients present at all ages with chest pain, dyspnea, palpitations, and syncope. The most important complications of the disease are sudden cardi

BACKGROUND: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is one of the most common inherited cardiac disorders, with a prevalence in young adults of one in 500 and is defined by its wall thickening.
METHODS: This chapter of the supplement will present major clinical impacts of this disorder in its predilection to be inherited; its reputation as the most common cause of sudden death in young, healthy, athletic individuals; and its potential to develop heart failure due to either diastolic or systolic dysfunction, so-called "burned out" HCM. Underlying etiologies; diversity of morphologic, functional, and

According to current definition, peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a rare disorder in which left ventricular dysfunction and symptoms of heart failure occur in the last month of pregnancy. It has been reported that the incidence of PPCM is 1 in 3,000-4,000 live births. The pathogenesis is poorly understood, however, infectious, immunologic, and nutritional causes have been hypothesized. Clinical presentation includes usual signs and symptoms of heart failure, and unusual presentations such as thromboembolism. Diagnosis is based upon the clinical presentation of congestive heart failure and t

Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a rare, idiopathic, life-threatening disease of late pregnancy and early puerperium, occurring in patients with previously healthy hearts. Risk factors include multiparity, age>30 years, African American race, multiple pregnancies, obesity, hypertension, and toxemia. Signs and symptoms of PPCM resemble systolic heart failure, and it is diagnosed by exclusion. An echocardiogram typically reveals an ejection fraction of <45% and/or fractional shortening of <30%, along with a left ventricular end-diastolic dimension>2.7 cm/m2 of body surface area. Early diagnos

Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a rare disorder in which left ventricular dysfunction and symptoms of heart failure occur in the peripartum period in previously healthy women. Incidence of PPCM ranges from 1 in 1300 to 1 in 15,000 pregnancies. The etiology of PPCM is unknown, but viral, autoimmune, and idiopathic causes may contribute. The diagnostic criteria are onset of heart failure in the last month of pregnancy or in the first 5 months postpartum, absence of determinable cause for cardiac failure, and absence of a demonstrable heart disease before the last month of pregnancy. Diabetic cardiomyopathy is a myocardial disease caused by diabetes mellitus unrelated to vascular and valvular pathology or systemic arterial hypertension. Clinical and experimental studies have shown that diabetes mellitus causes myocardial hypertrophy, necrosis, and apoptosis, and increases interstitial tissue. The pathophysiology of diabetic cardiomyopathy is incompletely understood. It appears that metabolic perturbations such as hyperlipidemia, hyperinsulinemia, hyperglycemia, and changes in cardiac metabolism are involved in cellular consequences leading to increased oxidative stress, in

Cirrhotic cardiomyopathy is the term used to describe a constellation of features indicative of abnormal heart structure and function in patients with cirrhosis. These include systolic and diastolic dysfunction, electrophysiological changes, and macroscopic and microscopic structural changes. The prevalence of cirrhotic cardiomyopathy remains unknown at present, mostly because the disease is generally latent and shows itself when the patient is subjected to stress such as exercise, drugs, hemorrhage and surgery. The main clinical features of cirrhotic cardiomyopathy include baseline increased

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) remains the main cause of sudden death in top class sportsmen and women. In these persons, practicing over 10 hours of sport per week and/or engaging in competitions in the younger age group, the distinction between physiological and pathological left ventricular hypertrophy, (LVH) is usually easy. In favour of physiological LVH, the hypertrophy is symmetrical, < 13mm on echocardiography (12mm in women and adolescents), non obstructive, with normal or slightly increased left ventricular size (> or = 55mm), only slight left atrial dilatation, mitral E/A ratio >

Liver cirrhosis is associated with a wide range of cardiovascular abnormalities. These abnormalities include hyperdynamic circulation characterized by an increase in cardiac output and a decrease in peripheral vascular resistance. Despite the increased cardiac output, impaired ventricular contractility in response to both physiological and pharmacological stimuli has been described. Other cardiac abnormalities include structural changes including enlargement or hypertrophy of different cardiac chambers and electrophysiological changes such as QT prolongation. This constellation of cardiac abno

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a multigenetic cardiac disease with autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance and incomplete penetrance, with the exclusion of those cases caused by mutations in the mitochondrial genome. The disease is usually caused by mutations in several sarcomeric contractile protein genes. Mutations have been found in four genes that encode components of the thick filament: beta myosin heavy chain (5), essential myosin light chains (6), regulatory myosin light chains (6), and cardiac myosin binding protein -C (7), (8); in five genes that encode thin filament proteins: cardi
