Vascular injury, hypertension and coronary artery disease in human immunodeficiency virus infection.

The atherogenic effects of some highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) regimens, especially those including protease inhibitors (PI), may synergistically promote the acceleration of cardiovascular disease and increase the risk of death from cardiovascular events even in young HIV-infected people. Along with the endothelial dysfunction associated with visceral fat accumulation and related metabolic alterations of HIV-lipodystrophy syndrome (eg, insulin resistance), vascular injury has been associated with HIV-1 infection itself, with an autoimmune reaction to viral infection (vasculitis)

Paradox of hepatitis B: Metabolic risk and cardiovascular protection in a national cohort.

BACKGROUND: Although Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is primarily associated with hepatic complications, its link to systemic metabolic and cardiovascular diseases remains inconclusive. This study investigated the paradoxical relationship between HBV infection and cardiovascular outcomes in a large nationwide cohort. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (2010-2020). After strict exclusion and two-step propensity score matching, 409,799 HBV-infected patients and 2,048,995 matched controls were identified. We analyzed the incid

[Does chronic periodontitis play a role in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases?].

The role of chronic infections in the initiation of atherosclerotic lesions has been vividly discussed in recent years. A possible causal relationship between cardiovascular diseases and infections with, e. g., Chlamydia pneumoniae, Helicobacter pylori, or herpes viruses had also been established for chronic periodontitis, in particular after discovery of DNA of typical periodontal pathogens in atheromatous plaques. Especially in longitudinal epidemiologic studies, a low or moderate association between existing periodontitis and the development of, e. g., coronary heart disease or non-haemorrh

[The relationship between Chlamydia pneumoniae and atherosclerosis].

BACKGROUND: Risk factors for arthrosclerosis have been well identified. More than ten years ago, an infectious process was incriminated, particularly the pathogenic effect of Chlamydia pneumoniae in the development of atheromatous lesions responsible for ischemic cardiovascular diseases. DATA BASES: Several approaches have been used to assess the presence of a relationship between C. pneumoniae and the development of cardiovascular disease. Serological, histopathological (study of the atheromatous plaque), pathophysiological, and finally animal studies using models reproducing the human disea

Cytomegalovirus and Cardiovascular Disease: A Hypothetical Role for Viral G-Protein-Coupled Receptors in Hypertension.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a member of the β-herpesviruses and is ubiquitous, infecting 50%-99% of the human population depending on ethnic and socioeconomic conditions. CMV establishes lifelong, latent infections in their host. Spontaneous reactivation of CMV is usually asymptomatic, but reactivation events in immunocompromised or immunosuppressed individuals can lead to severe morbidity and mortality. Moreover, herpesvirus infections have been associated with several cardiovascular and post-transplant diseases (stroke, atherosclerosis, post-transplant vasculopathy, and hypertension). Herpesvir

[Vaccines and preventive activities in patients with inflammatory arthritis].

Patients with inflammatory arthritis and eligible for immunosuppressive therapy account for more than 1% of general population, and represents a significant workload on family doctors. They are prone to other comorbidities, with an increased cardiovascular risk and a higher incidence of infections than the general population, especially skin infections and pneumonitis. This comorbidity can be considered vulnerable to a prevention program-prevention of cardiovascular risk, cancer screening, vaccination schedule for adults. As for prevention through vaccination, importance should be given to pne

Causes of Death in People With Cardiovascular Disease: A UK Biobank Cohort Study.

Background Therapeutic advances have reduced cardiovascular death rates in people with cardiovascular diseases (CVD). We aimed to define the rates of cardiovascular and noncardiovascular death in people with specified CVDs or accruing cardiovascular multimorbidity. Methods and Results We studied 493 280 UK residents enrolled in the UK Biobank cohort study. The proportion of deaths attributed to cardiovascular, cancer, infection, or other causes were calculated in groups defined by 9 distinct self-reported CVDs at baseline, or by the number of these CVDs at baseline. Poisson regression analyses

Cardiovascular risk and endothelial function in people living with HIV/AIDS: design of the multi-site, longitudinal EndoAfrica study in the Western Cape Province of South Africa.

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence of an interaction between HIV-infection, anti-retroviral therapy (ART) and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Epidemiological studies in Europe and North America have been observing a shift towards an increased incidence of coronary heart disease and acute myocardial infarctions in HIV-infected populations compared to the general population even after adjusting for traditional cardiovascular risk factors. Despite South Africa (and sub-Saharan Africa, SSA) being regarded as the epicentre of the global HIV epidemic, very little is known about the prevalence of c

Q fever endocarditis associated with a cardiovascular implantable electronic device.

Cardiovascular implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) are frequently related to endocarditis. Most cases of intravascular CIED infections are usually related to skin flora, but a few cases may occur with negative blood culture. Coxiella burnetii is one of the main causes of blood culture-negative endocarditis in native and prosthetic valves, but to date no cases related to CIED have been published. Herein we report two cases of Q fever endocarditis related to these non-valvular cardiovascular devices.

Influence of immune activation and inflammatory response on cardiovascular risk associated with the human immunodeficiency virus.

Patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have an increased cardiovascular risk. Although initially this increased risk was attributed to metabolic alterations associated with antiretroviral treatment, in recent years, the attention has been focused on the HIV disease itself. Inflammation, immune system activation, and endothelial dysfunction facilitated by HIV infection have been identified as key factors in the development and progression of atherosclerosis. In this review, we describe the epidemiology and pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease in patients with HIV infect

Letter to editor: Trends and disparities in cardiovascular deaths in systemic lupus erythematosus: A population-based retrospective study in the United States from 1999 to 2020.

This letter addresses key limitations in the article "Trends and disparities in cardiovascular deaths in systemic lupus erythematosus: A population-based retrospective study in the United States from 1999 to 2020." While the article provides valuable insights into cardiovascular mortality among SLE patients, it overlooks critical factors such as medication adherence and sex-specific treatment responses, which could influence the reported outcomes. Additionally, the study's focus on cardiovascular deaths sidelines other relevant causes of mortality like infections and renal failure. Incorporati

Non-traditional cardiovascular risk factors after kidney transplantation.

Kidney transplantation remains the best treatment option for patients with end-stage kidney disease, offering superior outcomes and improved quality of life. However, as in the general population, cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of mortality among kidney transplant recipients. While traditional cardiovascular risk factors-such as hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and tobacco use-are prevalent in this population, they are often compounded by transplant-specific and non-traditional risk factors unique to the post-transplant setting. This review aims to explore these non-trad

Cardiovascular Dynamics in HIV: The Influence of Adrenal Function and Nutritional Status.

This interdisciplinary review explores the intricate nexus between HIV infection, nutrition, adrenal gland function, and cardiovascular health, highlighting a critical aspect of HIV management often overlooked in current literature. With the advent of antiretroviral therapy, the life expectancy of people living with HIV has dramatically improved, transforming HIV into a manageable chronic condition. However, this success brings forth new challenges, notably an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases among people living with HIV. We examine the normal physiology of the adrenal gland, includin

Cardiac imaging procedures and the COVID-19 pandemic: recommendations of the European Society of Cardiovascular Radiology (ESCR).

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2019 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic currently constitutes a significant burden on worldwide health care systems, with important implications on many levels, including radiology departments. Given the established fundamental role of cardiovascular imaging in modern healthcare, and the specific value of cardiopulmonary radiology in COVID-19 patients, departmental organisation and imaging programs need to be restructured during the pandemic in order to provide access to modern cardiovascular services to both infected and non-infected patients while ensurin

Effects of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors on cardiovascular disease, death and safety outcomes in type 2 diabetes - A systematic review.

AIM: Sodium glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors appear to protect against increased risks of cardiovascular and kidney disease in patients with type 2 diabetes but also cause some harms. Whether effects are comparable across drug class or specific to individual compounds is unclear. This meta-analysis assessed the class and individual compound effects of SGLT2 inhibition versus control on cardiovascular events, death, kidney disease and safety outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes. METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library and regulatory databases were systematically searched

2025 Expert Consensus Recommendations on Vaccinations in Adults with High Cardiovascular Risk and Cardiovascular Disease: A Report of the Task Force of the Taiwan Society of Cardiology and the Infectious Diseases Society of Taiwan.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of death worldwide, and infections often worsen the clinical condition of these patients. Respiratory infections, either bacterial or viral sources, are important causes of high morbidity and mortality in older adults. Beyond the burden of infection-related complications, they are also associated with non-infection-related complications such as cardiovascular (CV) events. For example, herpes zoster is associated with an increased risk of stroke and myocardial infarction. Vaccination is an effective preventive strategy for patients with CVD by red

An Exploration of How Solar Radiation Affects the Seasonal Variation of Human Mortality Rates and the Seasonal Variation in Some Other Common Disorders.

Many diseases have large seasonal variations in which winter overall mortality rates are about 25% higher than in summer in mid-latitude countries, with cardiovascular diseases and respiratory infections and conditions accounting for most of the variation. Cancers, by contrast, do not usually have pronounced seasonal variations in incidence or mortality rates. This narrative review examines the epidemiological evidence for seasonal variations in blood pressure, cardiovascular disease rates and respiratory viral infections in relation to atmospheric temperature and humidity, and solar UV exposu
