Two cattle died acutely after being sprayed for lice control with a cyclodiene organochlorine insecticide, endosulfan, not labelled for use in cattle. Three other cattle became acutely ill, but survived after symptomatic therapy and removal of the insecticide from their skin and prevention of enterohepatic circulation. These cases illustrated the risk of acute toxicosis when organochlorine insecticides are used off-label and the potential for illegal tissue and milk residues.

Trichomoniasis is a disease of the pregnancy, but apparently not of either the cow or the bull, except in the case of postcoital pyometra. Its self-limiting nature in the cow and chronic nature in the bull mean that a positive diagnosis for the herd can more easily be obtained from bulls than from cows. A reservoir for sperm has been found in the oviductal isthmus in several species. Sperm are apparently trapped in the reservoir by binding to the oviductal epithelium, although other factors may be involved. A tandem fusion involving chromosome 4 and chromosome 21 of the bovine karyotype, is described in a newborn Holstein-Friesian heifer which was also a blood chimera exhibiting female cells of normal bovine karyotype and male cells with a 59, XY + tan (4:21). In Israel, dermatophilosis was found to inflict severe lesions, especially in first-calving cows during the first weeks post-parturition. Decreased milk production (by 40% on average) was also noted. Acute exudative dermatitis was observed in these animals. Severely reacting animals (570 in 38 kibbutz herds and 15 animals in 4 family herds) were treated with antibiotics. Salicyluric acid (SUA) was the only metabolite detected in urine of either species. Few cases of infection with Paramphistomum spp. have been reported from cattle in Canada. During the course of a recent study of bovine fascioliasis both P. microbothrioides and P. liorchis were found in the rumen of dairy cattle slaughtered in a Quebec abattoir.
