MR imaging of CNS relapse of Whipple disease.

We report a case of late CNS relapse of Whipple disease without articular or digestive signs. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the brain clearly showed the disappearance of the normal low intensity signal of the aqueduct of Sylvius and the presence of high intensity signals in the frontal white matter and in the caudate nucleus. This case suggests that MR imaging of the brain is the procedure of choice for identifying cerebral involvement in Whipple disease.

Regional dopaminergic dysfunction patterns discriminate Parkinson's disease from multiple system atrophy parkinsonian subtype.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) and multiple system atrophy parkinsonian subtype (MSA-P) are clinically similar α-synucleinopathies, ma … ent groups showed severe putaminal dopaminergic loss compared to controls. A key differentiator was caudate nucleus involvement: SUVR was significantly lower in MSA-P than in PD (P = 0.031) and controls (P = 0.006), while PD did not differ from controls. Cerebellar SUVR was also significantly reduced in MSA-P compared to PD (P = 0.026) and controls (P = 0.007), d …

Basis of executive functions in fine-grained architecture of cortical and subcortical human brain networks.

Theoretical models suggest that executive functions rely on both domain-general and domain-specific processes. Supporting this view, prior b … iological definitions of network borders. Matching results are seen in circumscribed regions of the caudate nucleus, thalamus, and cerebellum. The shifting peaks of local gradients at the intersection of task-specific networks provide a novel mechanistic insight into how partially-specialized networks interact with neighboring domain-general territories to genera …

Freesurfer Software Update Significantly Impacts Striatal Volumes in the Huntington's Disease Young Adult Study and Will Influence HD-ISS Staging.

BACKGROUND: The Huntington's Disease Integrated Staging System (HD-ISS) defined disease onset using volumetric cut-offs for caudate and putamen derived from FreeSurfer 6 (FS6). The impact of the latest software update (FS7) on volumes remains unknown. The Huntington's Disease Young Adult Study (HD-YAS) is appropriately positioned to explore differences in FS bias when detecting early atrophy. OBJECTIVE: Explore the relationships and differences between raw caudate and putamen volumes, calculated total intracranial volumes (cTICV), and adjusted caudate and putamen volumes, derived from FS6 and

[Evoked potentials in the rat neostriatum during local cooling of the cortex in the zone of primary response to the applied stimulus].

The effect of local cooling of the surface of the somatosensory cortex was studied while recording primary response (PR) in the center of a cooled area and evoked potentials (EP) in the striatum to the forepaw stimulation. The cooling which served to arise the amplitude of the PR, served also to arise the amplitude of the EP in the striatum. EP to the stimulus, the sensory representation of which in the cortex was cooled, were facilitated only. Facilitation of the striatal EP was more intense than facilitation of the cortical PR in the cooled area. The level of facilitation of the EP was the s

Detection of 5-S-cysteinyldopamine in human brain.

5-S-Cysteinyldopamine was synthesized and used as reference compound in HPLC analyses of extracts from various regions of human brain. The compound could be detected in brain regions rich in dopamine (caudate nucleus, putamen, globus pallidus and substantia nigra) but not in other regions (cerebellum, occipital cortex). The occurrence of 5-S-cysteinyldopamine in dopaminergic brain regions supports the hypothesis that dopamine in part undergoes autoxidation, leading to formation of highly reactive quinones. The newly discovered metabolite may prove useful in future studies of dopamine autoxidat…

Left Ventral Caudate Functional Connectivity Mediates the Relationship Between Habitual Responding and Alcohol Use.

Preclinical studies posit that habitual behaviour is an important mechanism in the development of alcohol use disorder (AUD), but human findings are unclear. The goals of this study were to test a behavioural measure of habit formation, the Slips of Action Task (SOAT), in humans and identify brain-based mechanisms explaining the relationship between habit and alcohol use. Thirty-six participants (63.9% female, mean age = 30.58, SD = 9.73, 69.4% White, 83.3% Not Hispanic/Latino) who endorsed heavy drinking completed self-report measures, the SOAT (lower scores = higher habit formation), a 2.5-h

[Schizophrenia: a psychobiological view].

Schizophrenia is a serious psychiatric illness which is responsible for a substantial proportion of mental illness worldwide. Symptoms include hallucinations, delusions, thought disorders (related with deficits of attention, memory and executive functions) and negative symptoms like poverty of thought and emotion, and social withdrawal. For most of this century the causes of schizophrenia have been largely unknown. However, the application of new techniques in genetics, structural and functional neuroimaging, psychopharmacology, epidemiology and neurochemical are beginning to disclose the aeti

[Assay of nuclear triiodothyronine receptors in the precentral gyrus in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis].

Abnormality in the receptor of the cell might have some bearing on the selective cellular damage in systemic degenerative diseases. In relation to deranged metabolic turnover of the folate cycle in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), we have measured nuclear triiodothyronine receptors (NT3R) in the precentral gyrus, stored at -80 degrees C after autopsy, of 4 ALS patients and 8 patients with non-neurological diseases. Cell nuclei were separated in bulk from about 1 g of grey matter by the method of Løvtrup-Rein & McEwen, and T3-binding assay was carried out by the method of Silva et al. DNA w

Connecting HTT intermediate alleles and microRNA dysregulation to enhanced tauopathy in late-onset Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Late-onset Alzheimer´s disease (LOAD) is a heterogeneous disorder influenced by complex genetic factors. We previously described intermediate alleles (IAs; 27–35 CAG repeats) in the huntingtin (HTT) gene as potential modifiers in around 6% of AD population. The caudate nucleus, the most affected region in Huntington’s disease, is highly sensitive to these HTT CAG repeats. We hypothesized that HTT IAs induce gene expression deregulation, including altered microRNA (miRNA) profiles, leading to altered disease progression. METHODS: We investigated the impact of HTT IAs on LOAD progres…

An acute tiny left putamenal lesion presenting with transient global amnesia.

INTRODUCTION: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is one of the most striking syndromes in clinical neurology. Brain lesions producing TGA have been reported in the hippocampus, amygdala, thalamus, caudate nucleus, and neocortex. CASE REPORT: We report a 63-year-old woman presenting with TGA associated with a localized lesion in the left putamen. CONCLUSIONS: This case suggests a potential role of the putamen in human memory processing.

A decrease in the size of the basal ganglia in children with fetal alcohol syndrome.

Magnetic resonance imaging was conducted on six children and adolescents with fetal alcohol syndrome and seven matched normal controls. These results may relate to behavioral findings in both humans and animals exposed to alcohol prenatally.

A case of clinically and neuropathologically atypical corticobasal degeneration with widespread iron deposition.

A 65-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital for forgetfulness, depression and eccentric behavior that had been first noticed 2 years prior to admission. She showed memory impairment, perseveration and repeated violent actions, but no limb-kinetic apraxia. She died 12 years after the onset of symptoms. At autopsy, the unfixed brain weighed 820 g. Atrophy was circumscribed in the frontal lobe on both sides. The globus pallidus and the caudate nucleus were markedly atrophic and gold yellow in color, and the substantia nigra was strikingly pale. The cortical area showed neuronal loss and stat…
