Carcinoma of the caecum.

This study presents a review of 519 of 553 unselected patients with carcinoma of the caecum presenting in the Plymouth Health District between 1975 and 1987. A large proportion of the patients were elderly and the median age increased throughout the study period to 76 years. One third of cases presented as an emergency and a small number was discovered at autopsy. Bowel obstruction accounted for over half the emergencies and chronic anaemia for half the elective cases. At presentation many tumours were advanced and only 5% were Dukes' A. One quarter of patients had synchronous tumours. Resecti

Haemangiomas of the gastrointestinal tract in children.

Haemangiomas of the gastrointestinal tract are unusual vascular anomalies either in children or in adults. There is a significant difficulty in their diagnosis because of this rarity. However, when they are present, haemangiomas of the gastrointestinal tract may be a source of acute or chronic blood loss and anaemia. The case histories of two children with severe gastrointestinal bleeding due to cavernous haemangioma of the duodenum and caecum are presented in this report. Progressive haemorrhage from the gastrointestinal tract was the indication for operative intervention in both children. Ea

[Surgical approach to abdominal aortic aneurysm with malignant alimentary tract tumor: report of three cases].

The clinical courses of three cases with various alimentary tract malignant lesions coincidental with abdominal aortic aneurysm were reported. Of those three patients, a simultaneous resection of the malignant lesion and aneurysm was carried out in two patients, while an secondary abdominal aneurysmectomy following the resection of the malignant lesion was done in one patient. A 70-year-old man with cancer of the cecum and an infra-renal abdominal aneurysm, was diagnosed preoperatively, and a simultaneous right hemicolectomy and aneurysmectomy were carried out. In the other patient, a 77-year-

Operations of choice for cancers of the colon and rectum. An overview.

Despite proven guidelines, rational management proposals, and effective surgical therapies, surgical resections not in accord with national norms continue to be used. Refinement of existing knowledge can improve the marginal results of the past. A simple overview is presented. Management of cancer of the cecum, ascending colon, hepatic and splenic flexures, transverse colon, descending, sigmoid, and rectosigmoid colon are graphically presented. Multiple large bowel polyps, chronic ulcerative colitis with tendency to neoplasia, and multiple polyposis are briefly discussed as to proper surgical

N-Shaped Port Placement for Simultaneous Robot-Assisted Right and Left-Sided Colectomies.

INTRODUCTION: Minimally invasive surgery offers significant advantages, including smaller incisions, reduced postoperative pain, and shorter recovery, especially in surgeries requiring access to multiple abdominal quadrants. However, robot-assisted resection of synchronous colorectal cancer (sCRC) remains technically challenging and unstandardized due to its rarity. Herein, we propose an N-shaped configuration of five-trocar placement for the simultaneous right- and left-sided colectomies with intracorporeal anastomosis. MATERIALS AND SURGICAL TECHNIQUE: An 85-year-old woman with synchronous

Colonic malignant melanoma, primary or metastatic? Case report.

Gastrointestinal malignant melanomas, either primary or metastatic, are rare and overlooked tumors. There is also controversy regarding the actual existence of primary melanoma in the gastrointestinal tract apart from the esophagus and anorectal regions, where melanocytes normally exist. A case of malignant melanoma in the cecum is presented. The patient was a 30- year-old male who presented to the hospital for abdominal pain and diarrhea. The tumor was located mainly in the submucosa and measured 14x11x4.5 cm. The cut surface was solid, gray-white and fleshy. Histologically, tumor cells were

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor with extensive involvement of the bowel in a 7-year-Old child.

We present a case of unusual localization of inflammatory fibroblastic tumor in the terminal ileum, cecum, and ascending colon in a 7-year-old child. Segmental resection of the terminal ileum, cecum, and ascending colon with a tumor mass up to 6 cm in diameter was performed. Pathohistological examination of biopsy specimen was performed on routine hematoxylin-eosin sections, as well as immunohistochemically with primary antibodies to CD3, CD20, CD68, factor VIII, vimentin, smooth muscle actin, desmin, cytokeratin and S-100 protein, and k and l light chains. The tumor was composed of highly vas

[Plasma-cell granuloma of the sigmoid colon concomitant with adenocarcinoma of the cecum. Viewpoint for debate, literature review on pseudotumors, idiopathic colitis and cancer].

A case of colonic pseudotumor, causing intestinal occlusion, concomitant with a caecum neoplasia is reported. A male 69 years old was referred to our Institution for colic abdominal pain: colonoscopy aborted because of an insuperable sigma stenosis; diagnostic enema confirmed the sigmoid stenosis, originally advised as neoplastic. As operation, the sigmoid tumor appeared accompanied with enlarged draining lymph nodes and peritoneal sac was disseminated of miliary-like whity granules. Hystological examination showed a plasma-cell granuloma with nodular and peritoneal chronic inflammatory reacti

Decrease in the incidence of malignant ileo-caecal immunocytoma in LOU/C rats after surgical removal of the ileo-caecal lymph nodes.

Malignant ileo-caecal immunocytomata, which secrete immunoglobulin, frequently arise spontaneously in LOU/C/Wsl rats. The tumors are confined to the ileo-caecal region and could originate either in the wall of the caecum or in the ileo-caecal lymph nodes. After excision of the ileo-caecal lymph nodes, the incidence of the type of tumor was found to be reduced significantly. The results strongly suggest that the first cells to undergo malignant transformation are located in the ileo-caecal nodes.

A new technique of primary retroperitoneal approach for minimally invasive surgical treatment of cecal colon cancer with d3 lymph node dissection.

BACKGROUND: In patients with high BMI and cardiopulmonary disease, the specificity of the laparoscopic approach may be an obstacle to the use of minimally invasive surgery. The primary retroperitoneal approach may overcome some of the unfavorable aspects of laparoscopic surgery and provide new possibilities for minimally invasive treatments. In this report, we present right colon resection using a primary retroperitoneal approach, in a patient with adhesions caused by previous surgical interventions. METHODS: A single-port single-access system is placed in the right lateral region of the abdo

Feasibility of endoscopic submucosal dissection for cecal tumors involving the ileocecal valve or appendiceal orifice.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Endoscopic resection of the ileocecal valve lesions (ICVL) and peri-appendiceal orifice lesions (PAOL), is challenging. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for ICVLs and PAOLs compared with other cecal lesions (OCEL). METHODS: This was a multicenter, retrospective cohort study conducted at a cancer center hospital and two community hospitals. Non-pedunculated cecal lesions that were intended to be treated by ESD followed by at least one surveillance colonoscopy were included. The main outcome was curative resection defined

Choriocarcinoma of the colon.

Primary choriocarcinoma of the colon is exceedingly rare. Only two cases have been previously reported, both located in the sigmoid colon. A case of choriocarcinoma arising in association with adenocarcinoma of the ascending colon (cecum) in a 35-year-old woman is described. Immunoperoxidase staining showed beta-human chorionic gonadotrophin to be present in the choriocarcinomatous portion of the primary tumor and in the metastases. Theories concerning the histogenesis of this rare neoplasma are briefly reviewed.
