[Research progress of refractory ceramic fiber's damage to human respiratory system].

Refractory ceramic fibers (RCFs) , as the main substitute for asbestos, are widely used because of their high temperature resistance and good thermal insulation. In the air of its production and use places, RCFs are inhalable fibers that are easy to deposit in the lungs. The results of a number of epidemiological studies and a variety of toxicological methods have shown that RCFs are related to the occurrence of lung diseases. This article reviews the four aspects of RCFs-induced pleural thickening, pulmonary fibrosis, lung function damage, tumor and genetic damage, and looks forward to the pr

OCCLUSAL TRAUMA OF IMPLANT-SUPPORTED METAL-CERAMIC CROWN: A CASE REPORT.

In this article there is a clinical case of occlusion trauma of implant-supported metal-ceramic crown for prosthetics of central incisor. Its uniqueness is the possibility to save dental implant after acute occlusion impact, which was strong enough to break ceramic facing of fixed denture, but not able to destroy bone and implant components. The occlusion force located at the incisal edge of the crown induced a reverse torque to the implant and did not result in its failure or bone resorption. In a year after repeated fixed prosthetics, the results of clinical examination proved absence of any

Modeling of Hydraulic Performance in Disks and Full-Scale Ceramic Water Filters.

Ceramic filters for household water treatment can improve water quality and reduce diarrheal disease. Hydraulic performance is critical for quality control and user acceptability, and hydraulic models have previously been developed and tested with experimental full-scale filters. As filters are cumbersome, there is interest in using disks instead of filters in laboratory efficacy studies. To assess the validity of disk use, we collected experimental volume from three sets of full-scale frustum-shaped filters and matching disks with different burn-out material sieve sizes and firing temperature

Effect of fatigue loading and failure mode of different ceramic implant abutments.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Currently many options are available for restoring a dental implant, although the ideal implant abutment for withstanding the occlusal load and the restorative material for fulfilling the esthetic need remains unclear. Zirconia (Zir) abutments offer good esthetics, but concerns still remain regarding their fracture strength, complex fabrication, and higher cost as compared with those of titanium (Ti) base abutments offering lower cost, acceptable esthetics, and a straightforward procedure. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the fracture strength

Ceramic Scaffolds in a Vacuum Suction Handle for Intraoperative Stromal Cell Enrichment.

During total joint replacement, high concentrations of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are released at the implantation site. They can be found in cell-tissue composites (CTC) that are regularly removed by surgical suction. A surgical vacuum suction handle was filled with bone substitute granules, acting as a filter allowing us to harvest CTC. The purpose of this study was to investigate the osteopromotive potential of CTC trapped in the bone substitute filter material during surgical suction. In the course of 10 elective total hip and knee replacement surgeries, β-tricalcium-phosphate (TCP)

Effect of dissolved silica on photocatalytic water purification with a TiO2 ceramic catalyst.

If photocatalytic water purification technologies will find practical applications, the impact of total dissolved solids in the source water on the activity of the photocatalyst must be evaluated. In this study, we evaluated the effects of SiO32- in water on a TiO2 ceramic photocatalyst; specifically, we determined the effects of SiO32- on the rate of photocatalytic degradation of formic acid (as a model contaminant) and on the rate of photocatalytic inactivation of Escherichia coli in an aqueous solution. Both the rate of formic acid degradation and the sterilization rate decreased with incre

Reactive Photo-Fenton ceramic membranes: Synthesis, characterization and antifouling performance.

To develop reactive and antifouling membrane filtration systems, a photo-Fenton ceramic membrane was prepared by coating goethite (α-FeOOH) catalysts on a zirconia/titania alumina membrane via a cross-linking method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to characterize α-FeOOH catalysts and the surface coating quality. The cross linker yielded stable covalent binding between catalyst and membrane under room temperature and produced a homogeneous and smooth coating of catalyst on ceramic membranes.

Experimental maxillary sinus augmentation using a highly bioactive glass ceramic.

Physicochemical characteristics of a biomaterial directly influence its biological behavior and fate. However, anatomical and physiological particularities of the recipient site also seem to contribute with this process. The present study aimed to evaluate bone healing of maxillary sinus augmentation using a novel bioactive glass ceramic in comparison with a bovine hydroxyapatite. Bilateral sinus augmentation was performed in adult male rabbits, divided into 4 groups according to the biomaterial used: BO-particulate bovine HA Bio-Oss(®) (BO), BO+G-particulate bovine HA + particulate autogenous

Does Metal Transfer Differ on Retrieved Ceramic and CoCr Femoral Heads?

Metal transfer has been observed on retrieved THA femoral heads for both CoCr and ceramic bearing materials. In vitro wear testing has shown increased wear to polyethylene acetabular liners with the presence of metal transfer. This study sought to investigate the extent of metal transfer on the bearing surface of CoCr and ceramic femoral heads and identify prevalent morphologies. Three bearing couple cohorts: M-PE (n = 50), C-PE (n = 35), and C-C (n = 15), were derived from two previously matched collections (n = 50/group) of CoCr and ceramic femoral heads. From the three cohorts, 75% of the f

Co-exposure to refractory ceramic fibres and asbestos and risk of pleural mesothelioma.

The aim of this study was to investigate the hypothesis of an increased risk of pleural mesothelioma due to co-exposure to asbestos and refractory ceramic fibres (RCF) compared to asbestos exposure alone. Males were selected from a French case-control study conducted in 1987-1993 and from the French National Mesothelioma Surveillance Program in 1998-2006. Two population controls were frequency matched to each case by year of birth. Complete job histories were collected and occupational asbestos and RCF exposures were assessed using job exposure matrices. The dose-response relationships for asb

Perspectives on refractory ceramic fiber (RCF) carcinogenicity: comparisons with other fibers.

In 2011, SCOEL classified RCF as a secondary genotoxic carcinogen and supported a practical threshold. Inflammation was considered the predominant manifestation of RCF toxicity. Intrapleural and intraperitoneal implantation induced mesotheliomas and sarcomas in laboratory animals. Chronic nose-only inhalation bioassays indicated that RCF exposure in rats increased the incidence of lung cancer and similar exposures resulted in mesothelioma in hamsters, but these studies may have been compromised by overload. Epidemiological studies in the US and Europe showed an association between exposure and

Ceramic inlays: is the inlay thickness an important factor influencing the fracture risk?

OBJECTIVES: It is still unclear whether the inlay thickness is an important factor influencing the fracture risk of ceramic inlays. As high tensile stresses increase the fracture risk of ceramic inlays, the objective of the present finite element method (FEM) study was to biomechanically analyze the correlation between inlay thickness (T) and the induced first principal stress. METHODS: Fourteen ceramic inlay models with varying thickness (0.7-2.0 mm) were generated. All inlays were combined with a CAD model of a first mandibular molar (tooth 46), including the PDL and a mandibular segment wh

Unique microstructural design of ceramic scaffolds for bone regeneration under load.

During the past two decades, research on ceramic scaffolds for bone regeneration has progressed rapidly; however, currently available porous scaffolds remain unsuitable for load-bearing applications. The key to success is to apply microstructural design strategies to develop ceramic scaffolds with mechanical properties approaching those of bone. Here we report on the development of a unique microstructurally designed ceramic scaffold, strontium-hardystonite-gahnite (Sr-HT-gahnite), with 85% porosity, 500μm pore size, a competitive compressive strength of 4.1±0.3MPa and a compressive modulus of
