Congenital abnormalities of the feline vertebral column.

Radiographs of vertebral segments from 200 cats were retrospectively assessed to determine the incidence of congenital axial skeletal abnormalities. The axial skeleton was divided into cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, and caudal segments and the presence and types of congenital abnormalities present were recorded for each segment. A total of 598 axial skeletal segments were examined. Congenital abnormalities were found in 46 cats and involved 54 spinal segments. Block vertebrae were identified in three cats. No hemivertebrae or spina bifida were noted. Transitional abnormalities were most c

Neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome: a review of diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.

The diagnosis and treatment of neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome (nTOS) remain challenging. Although consensus-based clinical frameworks e … urgical techniques include first rib resection, rib-sparing scalenectomy, pectoralis minor release, cervical rib resection. However, the optimal treatment remains controversial due to the limited availability of high-quality evidence. Future research should focus on elucidating the pathophysiology of nTOS, improving diagnostic accuracy through technological in …

Horner syndrome due to first rib fracture after major thoracic trauma.

A case of Horner syndrome diagnosed during the follow-up after major thoracic trauma is presented in this report. A 10-year-old boy was admitted to the emergency service with severe thoracic trauma with left clavicular and first rib fracture after a traffic accident. During the follow-up, myosis and ptosis were recognized in his left eye. Cranial tomography and neurological examination were all normal. The symptoms were thought to be caused by compression of the local hematoma to the cervical ganglia. After 30 days of conservative treatment with tube thoracostomies, he was discharged with his

Multiple brown tumors in primary hyperparathyroidism caused by an adenoma mimicking metastatic bone disease with false positive results on computed tomography and Tc-99m sestamibi imaging: MR findings.

We encountered an unusual case of hyperparathyroidism with both hemosiderin deposits on the ribs and low intensity on T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) caused by a parathyroid adenoma with multiple brown tumors that mimicked metastatic bone tumor due to false positive results on computed tomography (CT) and Tc-99m sestamibi (MIBI) imaging. The patient, a middle-aged woman, had very high serum levels of calcium (14.1 mg/dl), alkaline phosphatase (9,369 IU/l) and intact-PTH (12,400 pg/ml), and a large tumor (2.5 cm in diameter) in the lower portion of the left lobe of the thyroid. Spondylocostal dysostosis in a pregnancy complicated by confined placental mosaicism for tetrasomy 9p.

The spondylocostal dysostoses (SCD) are a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by defects of vertebral segmentation and rib abnormalities. We report on the diagnosis of two siblings with SCD. Diagnosis was first made in a female infant following a pregnancy that was complicated by early fetal hydrops and a nuchal translucency of 8.2 mm in the first trimester. The clinical picture was complicated by the co-existent diagnosis of confined placental mosaicism (CPM) for tetrasomy 9p. To our knowledge, this is the first report of CPM for tetrasomy 9p. Postnatally

Thoraco-cervico-brachial confined spaces an anatomic study.

A description is made on narrow spaces through which the brachial plexus and subclavian-axillary vessels run from the cervical spine up to the inferior border of the pectoralis major muscle. The spaces are: "Pleural suspensory Apparatus", interscalene spaces (vascular and neural), costo-clavicular, clavi-pectoral, retro-pectoralis minor, pre-humeral head, median nerve roots compass, pre-scalene space. Compressions with or without cervical rib, static or dynamic, are also described. Downward migration of shoulder girdle and muscle variations are analyzed. Forced positions which may produce comp…

Posterior cervical fusion in chidren.

Six cases of posterior cervical fusion with rib grafts in children are reported. Four of the children had sustained cervical spine injuries in accidents, and two had congenital absence of the odontoid. Three-level fusions (C1-3) were done in four children, and four-level fusions (C1-4) in two. One child died of unrelated causes 3 months after the operation. The other five children have been followed for 5 to 13 years. All are doing well and each has a remarkably supple, stable neck and no neurological deficit.

[Thoracic outlet compression syndrome].

In patients suffering from chronic, therapy-resistant shoulder and arm pains, the thoracic outlet compression syndrome (TOS) should be included in the differential diagnosis. It is very important to look out for neurogenic disorders as well as early signs of vascular compression in order to prevent ischaemic injuries. Although the initial complaints appear slight and can in some cases be treated successfully by conservative methods, neurogenic disorders due to TOS as well as arterial and venous manifestations of the syndrome should be treated by resection of the first rib. Only in this way can

A radiographic study of variations of the human fetal spine.

Variations of the vertebral column were considered to be those deviations from the norm which were still compatible with normal life and not … ure of the study, it could not be determined whether these centers would have developed into actual cervical ribs. Far less common were the presence of lumbar ribs (1%). Ossification of the vertebral centra was found to be confusing with no clearly defined pattern being evident. In particular, there was a suggestion that some of the vertebral centra might well …

The thoracic outlet syndrome in athletes.

BACKGROUND: The array of symptoms that characterize thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) often lead to a failure or delay in diagnosing this condi … ession include injury to the scalene or scapular suspensory muscles, anomalous fibromuscular bands, cervical ribs, clavicular deformity, and pectoralis minor tendon hypertrophy. The diagnosis of TOS is established on the results of the history and physical examination. Ancillary studies are most helpful to rule out other conditions rather than confirm the diag …

[Surgical treatment of the upper thoracic outlet syndrome].

In a five year period we have treated surgically eight patients with TOS in the Neurosurgical Clinic Sarajevo. We have concluded that there is not specific diagnostic procedure for the verification of TOS and as surgical method of choice we suggest supraclavicular scalenectomy with neurolysis of plexus brachialis and resection of cervical rib, if exists.

An elderly male with tubercular osteomyelitis of the chest wall.

Primary tuberculosis of the ribs is rare. A 70-year-old male presented with a 6-month history of a chest wall swelling that ruptured over few weeks to lead to a chronic discharging sinus. He had been administered multiple antibiotics, but the discharge continued. Clinical examination revealed anaemia, cervical lymphadenopathy and a 2-cm splenomegaly. Investigations revealed a normochromic and normocytic anaemia (Hb 7.0 g/dl), an ESR of 60 and a positive tuberculin sensitivity test of 25 mm. Surgical excision of the sinus along with the underlying revealed a caseous rib with histopathological f

Teratogenic interactions between methylmercury and mitomycin-C in mice.

Pregnant mice were given p.o. various nonteratogenic doses (0, 2.5, 5 and 10 mg/kg) of methylmercuric chloride on day 9 of pregnancy, and then injected i.p. with a teratogenic dose (4 mg/kg) of mitomycin-C on day 10. Major malformations produced by mitomycin-C alone were cervical rib and vertebral anomaly, polydactyly of the hindlimb and tail anomaly. Combined treatment significantly increased the incidence of these malformations, showing the dose-effect relationship of methylmercury, whereas methylmercury alone is known not to produce such malformations. When mitomycin-C treatment alone was p…
