Comparison of several ELISA tests for detecting the presence of IgG and IgM against herpes simplex viruses.

Four enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays designated test 1 (ETI-HSVK-G 1/2); test 2 (ETI-HSVK-M 1/2); test 3 (ETI-HSVK-G 2), and test 4 (BioElisa HSV2 IgG) were studied to evaluate different stages of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection. Samples (50 sera and 14 cerebrospinal fluid) were included in four groups. Group 1 consisted of samples from patients with primary HSV infections; group 2 comprised samples from patients with recurrent HSV infections; group 3 were samples nonreactive to HSV; and group 4 were samples from patients with infections by other herpes viruses (4a, chickenpox; 4b, her…

Simple technique for in field samples collection in the cases of skin rash illness and subsequent PCR detection of orthopoxviruses and varicella zoster virus.

BACKGROUND: In case of outbreak of rash illness in remote areas, clinically discriminating monkeypox (MPX) from severe form of chickenpox and from smallpox remains a concern for first responders. OBJECTIVE: The goal of the study was therefore to use MPX and chickenpox outbreaks in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as a test case for establishing a rapid and specific diagnosis in affected remote areas. METHODS: In 2008 and 2009, successive outbreaks of presumed MPX skin rash were reported in Bena Tshiadi, Yangala and Ndesha healthcare districts of the West Kasai province (DRC). Specimens con…

Mary Shelley's migraines and fatal stroke: some observations on their primary cause.

In this article the origins of Mary Shelley's neurological and cerebrovascular problems are described. Through a reanalysis of her biography, her early health issues caused by a dermatological condition, potentially eczema, psoriasis or chickenpox, are related, thanks to current biomedical knowledge, to her migraines and strokes, including the one that killed her.

Varicella Vaccine Effectiveness and Duration of Protection: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: This study provides a comprehensive review of studies comparing the effectiveness of varicella vaccinations and the duration of their protection. METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature review to identify comparative studies evaluating the effectiveness of the varicella vaccine. A meta-analysis was performed to assess the effectiveness of one-dose and two-dose vaccinations, as well as the outcomes for moderate and severe illness, and the duration of protection, using random effects models. RESULTS: Out of 66 studies, 57 reported the effectiveness of a single-dose varicella

Endemic human monkeypox, Democratic Republic of Congo, 2001-2004.

By analyzing vesicle fluids and crusted scabs from 136 persons with suspected monkeypox, we identified 51 cases of monkeypox by PCR, sequenced the hemagglutinin gene, and confirmed 94% of cases by virus culture. PCR demonstrated chickenpox in 61 patients. Coinfection with both viruses was found in 1 additional patient.

Varicella zoster virus: review of its management.

Varicella zoster virus (VZV) is one of eight herpes viruses known to infect humans. Primary infection causes varicella (chickenpox), after which virus becomes latent. Years later, VZV reactivates and causes a wide range of neurological diseases. The aim of the present report was to critically examine the published literature to evaluate advantages and limitations of therapy of VZV infection in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients. Aciclovir (ACV) has been the drug of choice for many years for the treatment of VZV infections. Recently, other antiviral agents have been developed t…

Course and outcome of acute cerebellar ataxia.

We report a study of 73 consecutive children with acute cerebellar ataxia, representing all of the children evaluated at St. Louis Children's Hospital during a 23-year-period to whom this diagnosis could appropriately be assigned. Twenty-six percent had chickenpox, 52% had other illnesses that were presumed to be viral, and in 3% the ataxia was related to immunization. Nineteen percent had no definite prodrome. Sixty children were followed for 4 months or longer after onset of their ataxia (mean, 7.4 +/- 6.0 years). Ninety-one percent (55/60) of these, including all children with chickenpox, r…

[Results of virostatic treatment of varicella with various severity].

Chickenpox is the result of primary infection with the varicella zoster virus (VZV), which--like other herpes-viruses--has the ability to remain latent within the nervous system; reactivation then sometimes causes shingles many decades later. While chickenpox is benign in normal children, infection in the immunocompromised patient is characterized by a period of prolonged viral replication, delayed healing and a high frequency of extracutaneous manifestations, such as pneumonitis and involvement of the nervous system. Therefore, current therapeutic research efforts have focused on both the pre…

Epidemiology of herpes zoster in children and adolescents: a population-based study.

Medical records were reviewed for all 173 cases of herpes zoster diagnosed among residents of Rochester, Minnesota, less than 20 years of ag … acute lymphocytic leukemia was 122 times higher than in children without an underlying malignancy. Chickenpox in the first year of life was found to be a risk factor for childhood zoster, with a relative risk between 2.8 and 20.9. Neither chickenpox in the second year of life nor recent vaccinations were found to be risk factors for childhood zoster.

A case of internal ophthalmoplegia associated with varicella zoster.

The authors report a case of internal ophthalmoplegia in a 5-year-old boy presenting after primary varicella infection. This is an uncommon and mostly irreversible ocular manifestation after chickenpox. The internal ophthalmoplegia showed a potential mild improvement with oral acyclovir. Consideration should be given to starting treatment on presentation in such cases.

Phytophotodermatitis after gardening.

Phytophotodermatitis, otherwise known as 'Strimmer's Rash' is an unusual cause of a widespread rash. We present a case of phytophotodermatitis, which was initially misdiagnosed as chickenpox; the correct diagnosis was made after further careful history taking and illustrates the importance of taking a thorough history when presented with what appears to be a spot diagnosis.

Severe varicella in persons vaccinated with varicella vaccine (breakthrough varicella): a systematic literature review.

Varicella vaccines are highly effective at preventing disease, but varicella may occur among vaccinated persons (termed breakthrough varicella). Breakthrough varicella is generally mild, but severe cases have been reported. The objective of this review is to describe severe breakthrough varicella. Areas covered: We conducted a systematic review of articles published during 1974-2016. A total of 34 articles were included in our review: 21 described breakthrough varicella with disseminated varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infection with other organ involvement in addition to skin (none among two-dos
