Mini-column screening assay for tetracyclines in chicken.

A simple, rapid, reliable and economical mini-column (MC) method for the detection of tetracyclines (TCs) residues in chicken meat was developed. The method employs a commonly available Pasteur pipette which is tightly packed with silica gel and anhydrous sodium sulfate. Clean-up and detection of illegal levels can be achieved on the same column. Viewing the developed MC under an ultraviolet lamp revealed that TCs can be detected as a compact golden yellow fluorescent band at the junction between the anhydrous sodium sulfate and silica gel layers. Comparing the yellow band of control extracts

Panic attacks and supraventricular tachycardias: the chicken or the egg?

Panic attacks occur in about 2 % of the population. Symptoms include a racing or pounding heart beat, chest pain, dizziness, light-headedness, nausea, difficulty in breathing, tingling or numbness in the hands, flushes or chills, dreamlike sensations or perceptual distortions. The symptoms of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT) may be similar. A PSVT is often difficult to document on the ECG since it has often ceased before the patient comes to medical attention. Besides, a tachycardia may still be present and even be documented but interpreted as a phenomenon secondary to the panic

Total anomalous pulmonary venous connection in a chicken.

This report describes a case of total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) in a 5-wk-old male white leghorn chicken that presented with growth retardation. This chicken was a specific-pathogen-free chicken bred in an isolator. At 5 wk of age, the chicken was euthanatized and autopsied. Macroscopically, the right ventricle and right atrium were significantly enlarged whereas the left atrium was small and blind-ending with no connection to the pulmonary veins. The pulmonary veins were connected directly to the right atrium. The above abnormality was accompanied by an ostium secundum-typ

Colovesical fistula caused by an ingested chicken bone.

Colovesical fistula involving the sigmoid colon is the most common fistulous communication between the gastrointestinal tract and the urinary bladder. These tracts are most commonly associated with diverticulitis but might arise secondary to a neoplasm, inflammatory bowel disease, iatrogenic injuries, radiation therapy, trauma, or foreign bodies. We describe a patient who developed a fistula between the sigmoid colon and bladder secondary to an ingested chicken bone that lodged in a colonic diverticulum. A portion of the foreign body was removed by direct visualization on colonoscopy; the rema

Investigation into the aetiology of runting and stunting syndrome in chickens.

Currently, the aetiology of runting and stunting syndrome (RSS) in chickens is unknown. The impact of RSS on weight gain and microscopic lesions in immunological organs and the duodenum, was investigated in 1-day-old commercial broilers at 12 days following exposure to RSS-contaminated litter. Furthermore, the presence of the viral nucleic acids of three astroviruses and one parvovirus was analysed by in situ hybridization from days 1 through 5 post exposure. A 70% decrease in weight was observed in the RSS-exposed group at the end of the experiments when compared with the unexposed controls. …

The chicken or the egg: PHEX, FGF23 and SIBLINGs unscrambled.

The eggshell is an ancient innovation that helped the vertebrates' transition from the oceans and gain dominion over the land. Coincident with this conquest, several new eggshell and noncollagenous bone-matrix proteins (NCPs) emerged. The protein ovocleidin-116 is one of these proteins with an ancestry stretching back to the Triassic. Ovocleidin-116 is an avian homolog of Matrix Extracellular Phosphoglycoprotein (MEPE) and belongs to a group of proteins called Small Integrin-Binding Ligand Interacting Glycoproteins (SIBLINGs). The genes for these NCPs are all clustered on chromosome 5q in mice

The effects of valproic acid and levetiracetam on chicken embryos.

For patients with epilepsy, anti-epileptic medication is generally the first line of treatment, but treating pregnant women with epilepsy can be a challenge. Standard anti-epileptic medications have caused developmental abnormalities, so much effort has been put into developing antiepileptic medications with minimal teratogenic effects. In this experimental study, the new-generation anti-epileptic medication levetiracetam and the standard anti-epileptic medication valproic acid were compared in terms of teratogenicity by studying embryonic development in 360 fertile White-Leghorn chicken eggs

Endometriosis and estroprogestins: the chicken or the egg causality dilemma.

Dysmenorrhea as a reason to initiate estroprogestins is significantly more common in women with endometriosis than in women without the disease. This might explain the previously reported mild association between endometriosis and past use of oral contraceptives.

Spatiotemporal mapping of the motility of the isolated chicken caecum.

We studied the caecal contractile activity of the chicken (Gallus gallus) using single caeca that had been cannulated at their proximal and distal ends, and in paired caeca, maintained in situ on excised segments of gut that were cannulated at the colonic and small intestinal ends. Longitudinal and circular contractile patterns were characterised using high-definition spatiotemporal mapping. Low amplitude longitudinal contraction waves of frequency 14.1 cycles/min occurred in the absence of major contractile events. These were termed fast phasic and appeared to be mediated by slow waves. The n

Intestinal volvulus with coagulative hepatic necrosis in a chicken.

A 7-week-old SPF chicken inoculated at 4 weeks of age with chicken anemia virus was puffed up depressed and had ruffled feathers and a good body condition. Intestinal volvulus involving the jejunum and part of the duodenum forming two loops with one knob was observed. Microscopically, venous infarction of the obstructed loops, periportal and sublobular multifocal coagulative hepatic necrosis and granulomatous inflammation of the cecal tonsils were observed. Gram staining revealed no bacteria in hepatic tissue; however, gram-positive bacilli were detected in the necrotic debris in the intestina

Abdominal fat and sleep apnea: the chicken or the egg?

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) syndrome is a disorder characterized by repetitive episodes of upper airway obstruction that occur during sleep. Associated features include loud snoring, fragmented sleep, repetitive hypoxemia/hypercapnia, daytime sleepiness, and cardiovascular complications. The prevalence of OSA is 2-3% and 4-5% in middle-aged women and men, respectively. The prevalence of OSA among obese patients exceeds 30%, reaching as high as 50-98% in the morbidly obese population. Obesity is probably the most important risk factor for the development of OSA. Some 60-90% of adults with OSA

Chicken embryo as an experimental model for the study of gastroschisis.

PURPOSE: To reproduce the experimental model of gastroschisis in chicken embryos and to prove that the histopathological changes that occur in this model can be compared to those in human gastroschisis. METHODS: A total of 278 Leghorn hen (Gallus domesticus) eggs were used. The embryos were divided into three groups: the gastroschisis group, in which the umbilical cord was opened through an orifice made in the eggshell, and the intestinal loops were exposed to a mixture of amniotic liquid and allantoid; the mixture group, in which the amniotic fluid and allantoid were simply mixed without man

Microvascular endowment in the developing chicken embryo lung.

In the current study, the contribution of the major angiogenic mechanisms, sprouting and intussusception, to vascular development in the avian lung has been demonstrated. Sprouting guides the emerging vessels to form the primordial vascular plexus, which successively surrounds and encloses the parabronchi. Intussusceptive angiogenesis has an upsurge from embryonic day 15 (E15) and contributes to the remarkably rapid expansion of the capillary plexus. Increased blood flow stimulates formation of pillars (the archetype of intussusception) in rows, their subsequent fusion and concomitant delineat

Molecular cloning and characterization of chicken NK-lysin.

NK-lysin is an anti-microbial and anti-tumor protein expressed by NK cells and T lymphocytes. In a previous report, we identified a set of o … d lymphocytes, and lowest levels in thymic and bursa lymphocytes. Following intestinal infection of chickens with Eimeria maxima, one of seven Eimeria species causing avian coccidiosis, NK-lysin transcript levels increased 3-4-fold in CD4+ and CD8+ intestinal IELs. However, cell depletion experiments suggested other T lymphocyte subpopulations also express …

Chicken pox after pediatric liver transplantation.

Previous case series have reported serious complications of chicken pox (CP) after pediatric liver transplantation (PLT), mainly due to visceral dissemination. The goal of our study was to determine the incidence, risk factors, and outcomes of CP after PLT. A case-control study of all CP infections in pediatric transplant recipients followed at our center from September 1993 to April 2004 was performed. Data were collected before and after infection and at the same time points in age-, gender-, and transplant year-matched controls. Potential risk factors prior to CP and adverse outcomes after
