Adoptive parents' experiences of dyadic developmental psychotherapy.

Dyadic developmental psychotherapy (DDP) is an attachment-focused therapy frequently used with adoptive and foster families. While the evidence base for DDP is building, national guidance has called for further trials and qualitative evidence. This study aimed to understand the experience of adoptive parents who have completed DDP therapy. Semi-structured interviews with 12 adoptive parents were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Four superordinate themes were identified: (1) increased understanding, (2) 'It's a different method of parenting generally', (3) the DDP journe

From challenge to growth: A qualitative study of parental adaptation to Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Raising a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) profoundly affects family dynamics and parental well-being. While research has often focused on stress and negative outcomes, less is known about the processes and resources that foster adaptation and growth in parents. This qualitative study explored the adaptation process among parents of children with ASD, examining both challenges and transformative experiences, and identifying key personal and contextual factors that support or hinder adjustment. Thirty-six parents (19 mothers, 17 fathers) of children aged 5-11 years with ASD (severity l

Late onset autistic symptoms and other fluctuating behaviors.

Suzanna was born to a 26-year-old woman who used cocaine, alcohol, and cigarettes and experienced domestic violence throughout her pregnancy. Suzanna was placed in foster care with her current adoptive family after her birth. Her initial evaluation at 4 years revealed a global developmental delay (physical: 6 months; social and communication: 12 months). Improvements in development seemed to be in response to subsequent interventions. At 5 years, she had borderline intellectual functioning, an expressive or receptive language disorder, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Suzanna expe

[Life events and trauma in chronic negligent mothers].

The present study examines more closely the chronic behaviors of maltreating mothers. Events that these mothers have experienced during childhood are examined, experiences including abuse, placement, separation, bereavement, rejection, neglect, lack of love and role reversal. Signs of unresolved trauma found in the discourse of mothers, such as dissociation, are also studied. It is proposed that negligent mothers from the chronic group will evoke more negative experiences and/or more intense negative experiences which occurred during childhood than the mothers from the transitory group. The ch

[Child oral health: A plea for interdisciplinarity].

A child’s oral health has major implications both for their general health and for their quality of life. Even before birth, the mother’s oral health can affect the development of the baby and pregnancy outcomes. From the very first months of life, feeding habits together with non-nutritive sucking ones, early transmission of pathogenic bacteria, and oral hygiene practices prefigure the child’s future health. The aim of this article is to provide a comprehensive overview of our current knowledge regarding the main oral health issues affecting children, namely dental caries, erosive tooth wear,

Youngsters who stutter: diagnosis, parent counseling, and referral.

The purpose of this paper is to present clinical considerations regarding the speaking behavior, nature, and environment of young children who stutter. The speech of these children contains more within-word speech disfluencies (sound/syllable repetitions, sound prolongations, and within-word pauses) than that of their normally fluent peers. Although the physical, mental, social, psychological, and communicative nature of these children is not grossly different than that of unaffected children, some youngsters who stutter do exhibit subtle delays or deviancies in speech sound articulation, expr

Flourishing Childhood Frameworks: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVES: Experiences in early life impact childhood, lifelong flourishing, and overall well-being. Yet a framework to guide promoting and measuring flourishing in early childhood has not emerged. The objective of this study was to identify frameworks and measures related to promoting and assessing early-childhood flourishing (0-5 years) to build on a preexisting, community-informed framework. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted across electronic databases and the gray literature for articles published between 2014-2026. Of 13 902 total references, 8592 were eligible for screening. Teacher-student relationships and social support as drivers of learning and behaviour in Malaysian gifted students.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the relationships among parental involvement, teacher-student relationships, child/adolescent social support, self-regulated learning, and behavioural outcomes (strengths and difficulties) among Malaysian gifted students. Specifically, the study investigated whether teacher-student relationships mediate the relationship between parental involvement and student outcomes and whether child/adolescent social support moderates the relationship between parental involvement and self-regulated learning and behavioural outcomes. METHODOLOGY: A total of 308 gifted students

The Kumagai Method Using the Pigeon Long Nipple for Dealing With Various Movements While Bottle Feeding Children With Cleft Lip And/or Palate: A Qualitative Descriptive Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Feeding poses a significant challenge for children with cleft lip and/or palate. The Kumagai method, a specialized approach for feeding these children, has been developed; its fundamental techniques have already been published. However, children often exhibit varied reactions to feeding, such as refusal and resistance. If not managed appropriately, these responses can hinder feeding progress. This study aimed to identify strategies for addressing different feeding-related movements in children with cleft lip and/or palate during bottle feeding. METHODS: In September 2022,

Supporting caregivers of children born prematurely in the development of language: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Infants born prematurely can display impairments that negatively impact the early years of their development. Compared to their peers born at term, preterm children have higher risks of cerebral palsy, sensory deficits, learning disabilities, cognitive and language deficits, as well as difficulties related to attention and behaviour. Following discharge, parents of preterm children are often supported through neonatal follow-up programs or by community health care practitioners. Through assessment and consultation, professionals foster parental resilience by teaching them about the

Positive Parenting Moderates the Association between Temperament and Self-Regulation in Low-Income Toddlers.

Self-regulation develops rapidly during the toddler years and underlies many important developmental outcomes, including social-emotional competence and academic achievement. It is important to understand factors that contribute to early self-regulation skills among children at risk for adjustment difficulties in these domains, such as children growing up in poverty. The current study examined mother-reported child temperament (negative affect, effortful control) and observed maternal parenting (during a mother-child free play) as contributing factors to toddlers' observed self-regulation duri

"Wild Child": how three principles of healing organized 12 years of psychotherapy.

Methods of conducting psychotherapy in the most severe forms of childhood posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), especially in those traumas discovered very early in life, are rarely reported. This paper presents such a report and in the process emphasizes three elements of treatment: abreaction (full emotional expression of the traumatic experience), context (understanding and gaining perspective on the experience), and correction (finding ways personally or through society to prevent or repair such experiences). With traumatized children, all three elements may be inserted into their therapeu

Doctor-child communication and caregivers' willingness to recommend hospital: a secondary analysis using pediatric patient experience data.

BACKGROUND: Doctor-child communication is central to pediatric care, yet current research often marginalizes child-centered interactions and fails to isolate which specific behaviors drive systemic hospital metrics. This study addresses these gaps by using The Child Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (Child HCAHPS) framework to deconstruct communication into three discrete behaviors. We aimed to assess their distinct effects on caregivers' overall hospital rating and willingness to recommend, thereby clarifying the link between triadic clinical interactions and in

Child maltreatment in young adults with residential youth care background: Prevalence and post-placement trends.

BACKGROUND: Young adults with residential youth care (RYC) background have often endured various forms of child maltreatment, impacting education, employment, health, mortality, and quality of life. There is limited research on the onset and duration of exposure to maltreatment before placement, as well as the prevalence of maltreatment occurring after children have been placed into out-of-home care. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate: (1) The sex-specific prevalence and age chronology of self-reported exposure to child maltreatment, and (2) whether the rate of these maltreatment forms

Postadoption parenting and socioemotional development in postinstitutionalized children.

Children adopted from institutions (e.g., orphanages) overseas are at increased risk of disturbances in social relationships and social understanding. Not all postinstitutionalized children exhibit these problems, although factors like the severity of deprivation and duration of deprivation increase their risk. To date, few studies have examined whether postadoption parenting might moderate the impact of early adverse care. Three groups were studied: postinstitutionalized and foster care children both adopted internationally and nonadopted children reared in their families of origin. The Emoti
