[Ophthalmological Screening in Children and Adults with Intellectual Disability].

INTRODUCTION: Special Olympics Germany is the German association of the largest global movement to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual and multiple disabilities. We offered all participants ophthalmological screening during the event in Offenburg, Baden-Württemberg, in 2017 as part of the health programme "Open Eyes - Better Vision". METHODS: A team of optometrists took medical histories, examined refraction status, visual acuity, colour vision and orthoptic status. Four experienced physician

Migraine in children: presentation, disability and response to treatment.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The current review presents findings from investigations of migraine in children. The presentation of pediatric migraine, related consequences, and medication treatments are reviewed. RECENT FINDINGS: A number of advancements have been made in the study of the presentation, disability, and treatments for migraine in children. However, recent research suggests that not all approaches are equally effective in the treatment of migraine in children. Specifically, a recent study comparing pharmacological interventions found that preventive medications were not statistically more

[Schooling and care of mild intellectual disability children].

Studies on mild intellectual disability (MID) are scarce. The aim of this study was to describe the educational and medical care trajectories and their determinants in children with MID. The study population concerned children born in 1997 and resident in a French county (Isère) in 2008. MID was defined as an overall IQ score between 50 and 69. For the present study, this definition was adjusted by integrating the IQ confidence intervals so that the risk of IQ measurement relativity and possible score discrepancy could be taken into account. Of the 267 children included, 180 (67%) were identif

[Cow's milk protein allergy in disability children].

BACKGROUND: Cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) is the most common food allergy in children. However, the prevalence of CMPA in disability children is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To know the frequency of CMPA in disability children and to assess the clinical improvement after a suppression diet. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a cohort study at the Children's Rehabilitation Center Telethon of Puebla, in which children aged 6 months to 5 years with clinical symptoms of CMPA were included, between January and September 2012. An exploratory questionnaire about clinical symptoms of CMPA was applied bef

Disabled children and adolescents may be outsiders in the community.

BACKGROUND: Most children with neurogenic bladder and bowel dysfunctions suffer from myelomeningocele and shunted hydrocephalus. Fewer such births and better treatment have led to more children reaching adulthood. Increased knowledge about their lived experiences can direct support to help them. AIM: The study aims to investigate how children and adolescents aged between 10 and 18 years old with neurogenic bladder and bowel dysfunction live their everyday life. METHODS: Hermeneutic phenomenology was appropriate to investigate the participants' experiences in depth. Thirteen qualitative inter

Reflections on the brainstem dysfunction in neurologically disabled children.

This article deals with the neurological basis of brainstem-related symptoms in disabled children. Synaptic interactions of respiratory and swallowing centers, which are briefly reviewed in this study, highlight the significance of the nucleus of solitary tract (NTS) in the stereotyped motor events. Coordination mechanisms between these two central pattern generators are also studied with a focus on the inhibitory action of decrementing expiratory neurons that terminate the inspiratory activity and become activated during swallowing. Dorsal brainstem lesions in hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy

Visual disabilities in children including childhood blindness.

We should address visual disabilities in children instead of only the childhood blindness. Diseases related to nutritional, communicable diseases should be addressed through strategies for achieving 'Millennium Development Goals'. Facilities in African countries and countries with populations like India and China must be strengthened to address curable/preventable visual disabilities in children. Even though all efforts are done to strengthen, we will have 0.93 million blind children by 2020. Role of family physicians and paediatricians in trans-disciplinary approach to address visual disabili

Surgery in disabled children: general gastroenterological aspects.

UNLABELLED: Cerebral palsy (CP) is a non-progressive but not unchanging disorder of movement and/or posture, due to an insult to or anomaly of the developing brain. Gastrointestinal surgery can play a role in the treatment of pathologies frequently associated with a condition of neurological impairment such as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (antireflux procedure), feeding difficulties (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy/jejunostomy) and swallowing difficulties (ligation of salivary gland ducts). Gastro-oesophageal reflux occurs in up to 70-75% of children with cerebral palsy. Children with

Current advances in bone health of disabled children.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Bone health is now recognized to contribute to overall lifetime management of children, adolescents, and adults with disabling conditions including physical and intellectual disability and with many chronic disease processes. Such disorders have multiple components, with aspects of care covering a wide number of specialist practices. This review will highlight advances in understanding the nature of bone mass accumulation through childhood and adolescence, the impingement of a spectrum of chronic and disabling diseases and their treatments on bone, and will address current a

Patterns of motor disability in very preterm children.

Motor development in very preterm children differs in several important ways from that of children born at full term. Variability is common, although the anatomic and physiologic bases for that variability are often poorly understood. Motor patterns over the first postnatal year may depend on behaviours learned during often long periods of neonatal intensive care. The normal pattern of development may be modified by disturbances of brain function caused both by the interruption of normal brain maturation ex-utero and the superimposition of focal brain injuries following very preterm birth. Abn

Disability from bicycle-related injuries in children.

Bicycle crashes are a major cause of injuries in childhood. The goal of this study was to determine the long-term disabilities caused by bicycle-related injuries, and to clarify the long-term treatment priorities of injured children. Hospital records of 372 children (ages 2-15 yr, median 9 yr; 232 boys and 140 girls) admitted with bicycle-related injuries from 1979 through 1986 provided clinical information, social service visits, in-hospital and outpatient rehabilitative interventions, and physical status at discharge. More complete evaluations were made by contacting parents by telephone (82

Written narratives of normal and learning disabled children.

Writing samples of children in grades one through three were collected in two midwestern elementary schools using the Picture Story Language Test. Each story was scored for productivity, syntax, and level of abstraction. Results indicated that performance in all aspects of written language improved with age.A second study was conducted to compare the writing of normal children who were average readers in grades one through three with learning disabled children who were reading at comparable levels. The results indicated no significant differences in productivity but there were differences in s

Abnormal head circumference in learning-disabled children.

The head circumferences of 73 learning-disabled children were compared with those of a matched control population of 71 children. Macrocephaly was noted in eight learning-disabled children but in only three controls, and microcephaly was present in seven learning-disabled children but in none of the controls. Abnormal head circumferences were noted in nine learning-disabled males but in only three control males. Since this study revealed an increased prevalence of both macrocephaly and microcephaly in children with learning disabilities, future studies of such children should include accurate

Middle ear function in learning-disabled children.

To investigate the possible association of chronic otitis media and school learning problems, past and current middle ear status in 53 learning-disabled (LD) children was compared to that of 56 control children without learning problems. A history of recurrent otitis media was obtained in 23% of the LD children and in 9% of the control children. Thirty-eight percent of LD children and 16% of control children had hearing abnormalities on pure tone audiometry; 49% of LD children and 21% of control children had abnormal tympanometry. LD children had significantly more middle ear malfunction than

Dichotic listening performance in learning-disabled children.

A dichotic listening test was administered to 114 learning-disabled children aged 6 to 10 years and the ratio of correct right ear responses to correct left ear responses was computed. Three subgroups were formed: those with a low right-left ear ratio, those with an average ratio, and those with a high ratio. The groups were given a battery of sensory integrative, postural-ocular, auditory-language, and academic tests. Mean scores were computed for each group. All three groups were considerably lower in their overall accuracy of response to the dichotic listening test than was a normative samp

[Sleep disorders in healthy children follows often a "learnt" behavioral pattern. Diurnal rhythm disturbances are dominating among children with functional disabilities].

A children's sleep disorders clinic was started as a project supported by the Swedish National Board for Health and Welfare in 1994. During the first three years 71 children, 21 girls and 50 boys aged 0.5-26 years, were clinically examined by a child neurologist/somnologist and a child psychologist. Psychological follow-up was offered. Twenty-five children were healthy, in the others several types of medical conditions were found. Twenty-five children were mentally retarded. In children with physical impairments the most common sleep problems were circadian sleep disturbances, in the healthy o
